Our Grammar School Dining Room was adjacent to the GC line just North of this model. I recognise the buildings and bridges from the 1950s, with 01 & 04 2-8-0 hauled goods traffic. They were busy days on the line then. Quickest route to London on trains like "The Master Cutler". A school friends father was a Driver at the loco depot. This has brought back many memories of those days of my youth. Sadly the whole scene has gone forever but seeing this has reminded me of the past glory of the GC. Upperton Road bridge was still there last time I was in the city but most of the rest of the scene is now unrecognisable with the steel girder bridges long since cut up and much of the area completely rebuilt. Thanks for a remarkable video, and all the memories reawakened

Love the A2/2 slippage. Perfectly captured in model form. All we needed were sparks of the rails!

It's an amazing layout more like a simulation of the time. What Tony Wright like?

Sir Nigel Gresley, the man who created the A1 and A2s? Gresley didn't produce an A2. A1 (later A10s), A3s, A4s, V2s but HNG certainly didn't produce an A2.

Thompson was maligned largely because he took "Great Northern," Gresley's pioneer Pacific as a guinea-pig for his own design. It was just unfortunate that "Great Northern" was in Doncaster works at the time. His rebuilding schemes from 3-cylinder to 2-cylinder was aborted by British Railways in 1949, and it was never conclusively proved whether the rebuilds were an improvement or not, or whether they were more economical. They were probably somewhat easier to maintain. The one real failure was the rebuilt D49, 62768, and once it sustained minor accident damage, no hesitation was made to withdraw it.

I'm so happy that you didnt just portray Thompson as a monster. You did splendid work. Have a gold star ⭐

Wonderful, amazing, instructive etc etc, though I remain unpersuaded that scale train lengths look right on anything other than scale length layouts, meaning at least several hundred feet, which rather defeats the concept of modelling. There's more to scale than linear ratios.

Thanks for showing your fabulous model. If all the infrastructure was still there today for us to use do you think this would be a good thing ? Was scrapping it the right or wrong thing to do in other words I’d love to read your comments. Thanks to the job I do I see the relics of the GCR and also the construction of HS2 that runs so close to the old GCR !!!!!

I imagine Toby as an English farmer, Henrietta’s the wife and Mavis is the farmers’ daughter who has her own ideas, just from the way they interact! 😄 Toby: Trucks should be *where* you want them and *how* you want them! Mavis: Fudge/Fiddlesticks!
