Old Bob works week ends and evening trying to keep old classics, and other stuff working. Enjoy watching me try to fix a few things and maybe learn something along the way.
I had a lot of trouble with mine. It would idle nicely when cold, but rough when warmed up. Have a Rochester carb, and found that it's possible to overtighten the carb. They just need snug, and tighter makes it so the carb will deform a bit warmed up and allow exhaust in through the base gasket ........
Just noticed a clunk over bumps today in my 2016 jetta, got home and looked and sure enough one of the springs was snapped just like this. This video will be very helpful when I go to replace them. Thank You.
If you can find them, get a complete assembly, (coil/strut/bearing) it will save you time. Have a look at my video on alignments at home. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-66vru7XSdyg.html Also saw on another alignment video, someone used two pieces of sheet metal with grease between placed under the wheel the to allow the wheel to settle when doing alignments.
@@oldbobsgarage8019I ended up getting all the parts (spring, strut, mount, bearing, etc) instead of a quick strut since I saw some bad reviews. About to do the job now.
Tell me what you really think🤣. I tend to drive what's the best deal for my needs at the time. I've driven Chevelles, Biscayne, Javelins, Dodges (Monoco, Daytona, Ram), Datsun, lots of GM vehicles, probably owned more than 30 cars. Curious to know what you think is the best?
Thanks for doing these videos, I am working on a CJ-3A with a 225, right now it is really hard to accelerate, will work on the points gap/ timing first. I also like Mikes carb shop!
Thanks for subscribing. I'll be doing more videos on the engine early spring. Biggest problem I had was the flattened cam lobes. I'm going to redo the compression check and look for vacuum leaks. I've got reasonable power, but a flat spot off idle and rough idle that develops as it warms.
One way to check for vacuum leak an old boy showed me is to spray gas on different spots on the engine from spray bottle, being mindful of fire! I've done it several times and found a cracked head and a vacuum leak on an old hose because idle speeds up.
Im in the same boat with my '68 odd fire... bogs right off idle. Trying everything. Timing, mixture. Feel like its too rich. Going to order some smaller jets hope that does it. What timing advance setting are you using?
Factory initial, maybe 2 extra degrees (6 - 8 degrees). Air/fuel is greatly affected by PCV flow. I'm going to try some different ones. Also plan to pull the intake. Keep thinking I've got a vacuum leak.
@oldbobsgarage8019 have mine running pretty good right now I have it advanced a bit more than I would like but runs the best there. How about top end noise? After I drive around for about 20 mins the top end is silent. Upon start up and once it comes back to idle for 5 mins sounds like a singer sewing machine. I was told this is normal for these. What's your experience?
Honestly, in my experience the sneezing is due to leaky exhaust. But as you have drag pipes, it can only be around your exhaust spigots if that’s the case.
I've seen the wrench, but for only the number of times I do this a year, it doesn't seem like something I need now. I'm working on purchasing another chassis to put my other panhead motor in. When that happens, I'll pick up a few more tools.
stock is always restrictive, but quiet. at low-end power band they are better, top end or hi-speed the motor breathes better making more power, but loud. find the medium and you're on your way. beauty of a bike, I miss my pan and all its headaches.
Bob.....51FL rider in Tulsa. Wondered what pistons and cam are in your motor. I've ran both the HD "H" cam and Andrews "A2" cam (with 8.5 cast pistons) and am not pleased with my starts. (prefer not to use body weight to assist cranking) I have a "J" cam on my bench which may be next to try......just wondering....walt...tulsa,ok
I don't know what the cam is, but they're stock HD pistons. I put a borescope inside one of my other videos if your interested. studio.ru-vid.comT5C0w9gg2vk/edit
Drag pipes perform great at WOT, and that’s about it. Yes, they will manage with some carb tuning for daily cruising, but they are not designed for “cruising”. I vote stockers!
Watch my Trailer, or subscribe and watch some of the other videos. Thanks for watching. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SsoLgnRk5CE.html
Hey Old Bob's Garage! Morning! I just saw this video of yours, even though you published a year ago. First, thanks for sharing it! if you were going to invite a Foreigner rider from Brazil who’s gonna visit USA on the HD’s 120th anniversay, and you would give to him a pass and lend him a 1952 HD bike to be riden along the old bikes parade of the 2023, July 16th HD Festivities.... What hints would you give to a rider who has never and ever riden such rare bike? (an american friend of mine who owns one, is asking me if I would ride his rare bike during the parade). Thanks, and thanks again for sharing your video!
The older air cooled engines would not do well in a parade. Slow speed will not let cool very well. I'd be concerned about oil pressure drop as the oil thins. The parade would be great, but I'd probably plan a piece of the route. Start part way through. Thanks for watching.
👍🏼i used some electronic contact cleaner on a few clutch discs in my '67 XLH and that stuff was a miracle cleaner,,,maint.electrician's got me a Case of spray. (case of Cold Beer and 2 bbq chickens on wknd overtime 4am lunch😎)
Great idea!! I plan to do this again because I think the type of grease on the rollers it the problem. I'm going to switch a lower temperature non-lithium base.
Looks just like my 67. Sorry, I don't have any ideas for you, but I hope you keep posting your videos of the jeepster because there aren't a lot of 225 oddfire troubleshooting videos available.
Thanks, I sure will. The PCV is held closed at idle with vacuum. Blocking this with my thumb or an orifice means too much air is passing through the PCV leaning out the carb which makes sense. I had 17 " last time I measured. Should be enough, PCV itself looks fine. Next video will be with me setting up my vacuum gauge and systematically going through each one checking for leaks.
Thanks, more to come this summer. I have a factory exhaust which I may try on this year. I'm also going to try to get more ride videos this year. Thanks for watching, and your comments.
