Father and son(s) starting a new hobby together in aviation and flight simulators, sharing their experiences and growth in the hobby over time right from the start. The father was a real world IFR/SEL rated pilot about 20 years ago. The son picked up an intense interest in aviation science playing around with FSX Steam, reigniting the father's old love for aviation. What a great way to share something together! Going all in, we're getting started with just humble gaming grade flight controls and X-plane 11 with aspirations to building the best and most realistic experience possible in a home simulator. We hope to post several videos each month going over a variety of topics, such as: Un-boxing simulator equipment, product reviews, recording flight practice and scenarios, cockpit builds, and other general aviation topics that we encounter along the way.
@@drewjenn9819 I still use the pedals, but I replaced the Logitech yoke and 2 TPMs with a Honeycomb alpha and bravo. I’d say the Logitech was great for starting out and I only replaced it because Honeycomb was a lot better and at a great price point for me, Given the state of Honeycomb, be careful now if you decide to buy that one… make sure you’re buying from the actual company.
@father-sonflightsimulator3838 Many thanks for your reply. I just ordered the package featured in your video. I have a Mac and not sure if it will support it. Do you know if I can set it up with a basic flat-screen tv monitor? What's the best device to hook it up to. I'm definitely keeping my Mac!😏
Hi. There’s no real multiplayer built in. If you want multiplayer (and you are serious flyer) then I would recommend Vatsim (which is free ATC plug-in) or a subscription based ATC PilotEdge plug-in which is real world accurate procedures. I have some videos where I am using PilotEdge you can check out.
My day job got busy so I started finding it hard to make videos; however recently I’ve been checking out MSFS2020 and I’ve upgraded several components of hardware.
I watched your video on flying from Fresno and really enjoyed it. I have the Navion 205 programed in my X-plane and fly it all the time. I have a friend that owns a 1947 Navion that he had completely restored upgraded the engine and prop (four bladed) and put in an Aspen glass instrument set up. Beautiful. And it flys great! The sim is not too far from the actual flying. My question for you is: how did you get the moving map to work on the panel on the left side of the windshield? Unless you enjoy flying the "old school" instruments, I suggest you go to Air Manager and design your own instrument panel. Also, my auto pilot works in Navion 205. Thanks and great job on the videos.
Thanks for the comment! Actually that moving map if I recall is just a desktop browser window I had open on my desktop. I grabbed it from the desktop into VR using a plug in I got off x-plane.org (I think it’s called movevr or something?). It allows you to bring windows from your desktop into vr, so I can also bring in sectionals, IFR approaches, etc.. I was only using that window here because it was cool to see all the other ppl logged into PilotEdge for the event. I don’t usually use that window when flying. That plug in also allows me to bring in live chat from RU-vid for livestreams as an example too.
This tutorial is specifically for X-plane 11 sceneries. The scenery has to be made for it. If it is then make sure the order is correct in the .ini file.
I do it like this: when I fly a Boeing or smaller airplane I use the Saitek pro flight system, but when I fly an Airbus I would only use the Saitek throttle and Thrustmaster Airbus joystick. The Throttle but only has a Ps2 connection ... does it work somehow ???
No you can’t just plug it into any PS2 port. You’d have to get an extra throttle quadrant that has a USB connector…. If you plan to fly twin prop planes though it might be worth it, I went ahead and got a second for that reason.
@Jason thanks for your interest. I got a lot busier at work which makes it harder for me to spend time making videos. What’s more my son is starting flying lessons in real life. RU-vid is no longer friendly to small content creators (actually they’re hostile now), which takes away a lot of incentive to continue. I’m glad you enjoyed the videos!
Our copy is for PC and I have another video that shows our whole set up. It still runs great though I want to get a later model VR headset (maybe a reverb g2?) I think there’s a mobile version of Xplane 11 but that’s never interested me. MSFS is playable on Xbox I think…. But if you’re going for real world realism in a flight sim (yoke/throttle/pedals, ATC, VR or physical cockpit) you can’t really do that on a console.
Personally I find it easiest/cheapest to just have a small table to the right of my chair with a notepad/pen, and just peak out the corner of the headset to write it down. I use the CRAFT method to note the clearance. (Cleared to, Route, Altitude, Frequency, Transponder)
Yes! In multiple configurations. The piston of the clamp has 2 or 3 positions on the clamp as well. Easily fits my desk. You can check out the cockpit video to see it set up. I also now have a second quadrant for multi engine control.
Gamer Gomali see pinned comment. Typo in a prewritten script and wasn’t thinking, yeah yeah, I know... but it’s not worth it to correct and reupload...
i've had mine for a couple years now , i don't usually keep my computer power on but a few months ago i did leave it on for a week or so, when I went to fly I noticed my flight yoke was dead, no lights and no functionality. Any suggestions on a cause or fix for this?
Joseph Mazzeo that really sucks!! I have mine plugged into a powered USB hub, and that hub is plugged into a surge protector power strip. Couple of things I’d try just to check it’s fried or not.. try plugging the USB into another PC to check if it still gets picked up.try reinstall of drivers. If it’s still truly fried you can try the detent fix mod that replaces the circuit board. (Probably the cheapest way to fix it). Otherwise, replace it with something better, perhaps the new Honeycomb.
Can you tell me a serial product key please? Thumb up and Red Button will be smashed :):):)Thumb up and red button is smashed for you whats ever your answer will be.
Jenefer Mills the throttle that comes with it is a PS2 connector that MUST go into the Yoke. However you can buy a second stand alone throttle quadrant that is USB and that can go into any USB 2.0/3.0 port. You can’t plug the PS2 port directly into the PC.
fede dale not really a noticeable drop from this plane to others. The video you can see is quite smooth even with OBS running and recording the oculus mirror. I think this one is well worth it, this plane excels in VR. It’s one of my favorite GA planes for farther flights.
AVI8R no, but it does mean you can’t independently control each engine. You throttle up you’re throttling both engines like a single engine plane. I did end up getting the 2nd USB throttle quadrant so now I can practice multi-engine techniques for simulating one engine out.
Brummie Deano hi there. My son and I still sim, he’s turning 15 and wants a discovery flight at our local flight school on his birthday! My work schedule and his schoolwork lately make it more difficult to spend the time putting these videos together.
John Turner yeah I thought that was weird too... you don’t really need it.. and you can buy an adjustable adapter for a lot cheaper than the Logitech one. Even still you really only need it if you use all the USB ports, and if you do you’re probably better off with a powered USB hub anyway. I use a powered USB hub on my system.
2ndwebhead yes they can be pricey, but this one is one of the cheapest for the value. CH isnt as good imho, Honeycomb is more than double this, and Yoko is like $1200!!
Braden Albertini I know, it’s just been tough to find the time lately to edit the videos. I do have one I need to finish about my buttkicker (install and use). Rest assured I’m still sim flying. My son is turning 15 next month and he wants a discovery flight for his birthday!
I have a Saitek X45. I think I will buy the rudder pedals from Microcenter ($169). I wanna get back into flight sims...although I fly small airplanes recreationally in real life.
Father-Son Flight Simulator Microcenter has them right now. I spent all of my money buying bank stocks since the stock market was on sale so I have to wait a little while before I can go out and spend more money
i have 1080 ti and ryzen 2700 x 8 cores, with 32 gig corsair ddr ram. All i get is 22 fps and x plane is on ssd drive as well. The game is set on medium as well
Mulberry2000 I’d wager the Ryzen is bottle necking you. Xplane does not use all cores, least not till Vulkan releases... try to optimize core usage with process lasso.
@@father-sonflightsimulator3838 i do not agree with that it is up there with most ryzen 7 cpus and is high end. It is also optimised for vr, it is the game, it is just crap as it runs off one core, that is not fault of ryzen 7 2700x. The game is poorly optimised. Also true earth gb is terrible for frame rates no matter what setting i put on it. I hate the addon it is just terrible and a waste of money. No wonder orbx does not like feedback and has strict rules for support. VR is a poorly optimised system in most games, project cars 2 being the exception. As for x plane not using all cores well that is not the fault of the cpu but the game. They need to stop thinking in terms of singular cpus that is old school 20 years ago thinking. It would not matter what ryzen i got and i am certainly not buying a new cpu for this game, or an intel they are not very good for the price.Ryzen is the way to go. Thanks for the reply. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iOmp9u9s0Ds.html
@@father-sonflightsimulator3838 The game barely uses one core never mind the other 7 and even in load up it just a tad touched on all cores, but not very consistent. Most of the time it just sat on one core and never used that to much affect. i did some tweets, used the tool u said in the video. It help somewhat, but i also updated windows 10. The result was i could fly very low with true earth scenery on max high settings over liverpool and manchester airport. It is a short hope between the two cities -ie 38 miles . Still the slight stutter no an then. 'Also windows 10 uses prechascing for fast loads of a program. For example when windows start one may think chrome is not open but in the background there are 44 chrome windows saved in the ram member and it does that with other programs. That is a nightmare to sort out. MoveVR was a waste of time, not good at all. Still i am only getting 22 fps even with the max settings. So it must be xplane doing it not the system though with some caveats.
@@father-sonflightsimulator3838 There is a frame rate counter on steam for vr, it is pretty good. I have read that frame rate number is not the best way to look at vr settings. Any way i have enable my vr on msi app and use the frame rate "counter" it says 90 fps etc which is normal. Just as i thought it was not my cpu. Once caveat it does not like u switch off mic on ur oculus headset. Damn russkies, no dammn cia lol work getting though. OH i can confirm the cessna 172 can do the loop. Oh and good luck with the coronavirus in america. I hope you are your family, community and nation is ok. Please take it seriously.
Ryan Arthur yes! You can use Blender which is free, but you’ll need to seek other tutorials. I think there is also a plug-in for Xplane11 but I’ve never used it.
