Great video! It’s funny to think of 90s inserts as a bastion of investing safety, but when compared to ultra modern, they’re much less volatile and WAY “safer”! 😂 When I got back into the hobby during the pandemic, I began with cards under $10, as it was purely for nostalgia’s sake. As I built up my collection again, I started to venture into the $50-$100 territory for my pickups. Even now as I’m getting into a few comma cards, the idea of “investing” by holding long term doesn’t really apply until you reach higher tiers of cards, where the opportunity cost starts getting significant. At a certain point, (and I’m getting pretty close to that point now) I won’t be comfortable going beyond a certain price point for a piece of cardboard with a picture of a sweaty man on it. But I count myself as one of those 90s player collectors who do sell my cards to get into other ones that I prioritize higher on my want list. While the idea of consolidation may sound appealing, it’s also putting all your eggs into a single basket, which can lead to higher risk exposure. Excellent thought provoking video here!
The difference in the hobby now and 30 years ago is simple when talking about people collecting modern cards. When we were ripping packs in the 80’s/90’s and chasing all the key rookie cards at that time. It was going in your PC. There was never a thought of selling your 1986 Donruss Canseco or 1989 Upper Deck Griffey. Maybe trading it if you had a double for another rookie card at that time. Now someone pulls a Wembanyama 1/1, the first thing they do is get it graded and sell it. That is exactly what happened as there is a RU-vid video that tracks that journey. Those guys aren’t long-term collectors and won’t be here 5-10 years from now. There is nothing wrong with collecting cards and looking at them as something of value, because it’s the reality of the hobby for the past 30 years. But the high end people are buying/ripping backs for one reasons: They look at that card solely as an investment and not for the PC. This is why the hobby never grows, as there are too many people who jump in for the quick buck.
I would rather have 20 cards vs 1 card. Price can swing down real quick. Mainly anything new or all of a sudden 100x.... that would be a horrible buy. If i am spending 50k on a card ,it better have a proven history of 50k for over a year and there hasnt been any wild swings in price. Dont buy Luka base at $1800.....how did that work out? What is the difference between that Olympic card and a national convention 1/1? It is a gimmick card, poor investment

As a husband and father of 4 i get it, especially in this economy. Hats off to him for doing whatever it takes. I know it's not easy, but family is definitely the priority.
I think it is youtube that is ruining the card market by giving the breakers a platform. They were never here. I like some but the millionaire guys are addicted to the cards 🤑💰 it seems like a litte rigged nowadays
Firstly, RunGoodLife is one of the few card guys I subscribe to because he doesn’t hold any punches. Sports Card Dad because he has some interesting takes and will call it as he sees it. But…do we really think Topps/Fanatics will change anything? There are two options: A) Acquire licenses and change nothing in terms of business practices. B) Acquire licenses, fleece the consumer into thinking they care about us, sell direct-to-consumer, prices increase drastically. Ultimately, Topps/Fanatics will do what lines their pockets. And, they have already shown they don’t mind chase cards magically appearing where it is most advantageous. I buy singles of what I collect but have ALWAYS enjoyed ripping wax. What I collect has changed with time because inflated/ridiculous prices make it less fun. Sad times for the hobby.

If you have any doubts about how many Jordan 101's there might be all you have to do is compare the number of other rookie cards in the 84 Star: Barkley, Olajuwan,, Drexler, etc. There shouldn't be a wide disparity in their numbers. II got my 86 Fleer Jordan in 1990 and my BGS 8.0 Jordan 101 in 2012 at a ridiculously low price. My question to the rest of you is why didn't you get the101 years ago when they were a lot cheaper?
I'm all for the breakers and the suckers who buy into them. They allow me to pick up the singles I want for cheap on ebay without having to gamble ripping overpriced product!
All the Trout haters gonna eat their words when all is said and done. Griffey Jr was injured a lot in his late 20s early 30s as well (go look at his games played between 1994-95 and then again 2001-2006). He ended up with an 83.8 WAR after playing an additional 4 seasons after those injury plagued seasons and wound up being considered the best of his generation Now consider this, Trout is only 33. He has 6-7 seasons left (probably moving to DH and 1B in the later part of his career) and he already has an 86.2 WAR. That means he is well within reach of 100 WAR and could get to 115-120 if he stays relatively healthy. That puts him in line with Ted Williams on the all-time WAR list. Write him off if you will, but Sho is never touching those numbers.
@@TheSportsCardDad correct as a recent breaker and long time hobby participant, you are lying 🤥 breakers can buy or sell to each other. You’re making more assumptions and you’re too lazy to research. Its RU-vid. You can be Personal Finance Dad and make shit up too. Oh… you did that. Try Collectible Dad and wing it. Oh… 🤣🤣🤣
@@TheCardHunter sorry you got triggered with some truth bombs, but I'm having a blast, and its going really well for me 👍 Have a great weekend, and maybe spread your wings and buy single cards! A lot easier to not blow money in the singles world
I’ve been collecting and selling for 30 years and lately I’ve notice that my interest has lessened everyday. I think panini with all the different parallels had something to do with it.
4:54 your description SCREAMS you have no idea and never participated in a Dutch auction. Dustin this is counterfeit content. How about interview MatrixSportsCard who watches every FOTL auction. He has real experience.
Good thing there’s content creators out there making videos and talking about what’s going on in the hobby. Otherwise you wouldn’t have any material to make videos
Not arguing that all these products are pumped and dumped. Yes having a trustworthy breaker reviewing products is ice. Yes opening cards is a gamble. Breakers will exploit all of our addictive tendencies. If your jumping into breaks. Please do so responsibly as possible. Avoid the gimmicks at all costs. Find the guys just wanting to rip the product and not rip the ppl off
RGL knows what’s up and is transparent with his views on product and breaking. Breakers driving up and prices and fanatics is drinking the kool-aid. I think it’s fanatics business model to keep selling these products high to breakers first and collectors second
Breakers doing something wrong has got to be a misprint, Breakers never do anything wrong, they always do things on the up and up. Breaking is the cleanest industry I know. BTW - NOBODY has ever uttered any of those above things in their LIFE. #BREAKINGISBAD #BREAKINGBAD #BREAKINGISGAMBLING #BREAKINGISHORRIBLE
The ‘84 Star #101 and the ‘85 Star #117 are much more rare than the ‘52 Topps Mantle. Jordan’s brand is global. This is a card you put away as an investment. Pop counts will increase some but it makes no difference if the 3rd year ‘86 Fleer is still selling like hot cakes what do you think the Star cards will do with much less supply 📈
An interesting story from @RunGoodLife around breakers potentially manipulating prices for the new Prizm Deca basketball card release. $25 OFF your 1st PSA grading submission (1 Card Minimum!)
