Let's not forget windows10 was supposed to be a lighter OS that suits arm based processors but it got more and more bloated that 3rd parties had to make thier own win10 lite. It seems why windows on arm always fail, is because of windows...
I do not understand why Microsoft would be relevant in this server story, 80% of server deployments are Linux today. Qualcomm can succeed without a single Windows Laptop or (ehm) tablet.
I think that's a little bit too early to tell the story of the chip, as it just hit the market... but you made a great work about the background foundations of the technology, RU-vid is full of teenagers that thinks the iPhone "started" in 7 series😅
Coming from IC design background, I easily get lost in the technical details and totally miss the story as well as the people behind these amazing technologies. Thank you for a great overview on the story of how the X Elite was created! :)
A never ending fools game. A company comes up with a cool sounding product name, announcing it years in advance with big promises, youtubers build up hype, product is released underwhelming and everyone forgets about it.
When have you last tried windows on arm ? I have tried it on many devices, phones and tablets with either snapdragon 845 or 855 which have had a uefi and windows drivers ported to them (Poco X3 pro, Xiaomi pad 5, One Plus 6) It's already very usable, native arm64 support is here for all OS apps and key apps like your web browser of choice x86 and x64 emulation are also more than good enough now, one can just install anything and launch it (within reason, cyberpunk won't run) I'm pretty sure these new laptops will actually be good, and they're not using samsung manufacturing like previous snapdragon devices which sucked
AFAICT, Microsoft's failure is often in actually getting people to adopt and migrate to their new hyped up platforms, especially with regards to getting developers to make the shift they've rarely ever succeeded. Considering that the X Elite is a real product, very functional, and cheaper than its intel core counterparts I think they have a good chance if most of the offerings are well priced, but I imagine lots of devices will still be expensive coz of various AI brand names & Microsoft licenses so I won't hold my breath atm, all I really want is devices with way longer battery life & more successful cross-platform apps & dev tools.
Microsoft is choking its WoA ecosystem themselves... by signing "exclusive agreements" one after another. I was expecting to see MTK, NVIDIA, Official RK or even Kirin(this one is much more difficult tho) WoAs after the initial exclusive agreements expires, but it seems M$ just signed another with Qualcomm, what a world.
Absolutely insane. I had to pause at some of the slides just to stare at the complexity. Every time I say "that is surely it. They can't go further than that!" a new development blows my mind. Bring on the sandwich era of chips!
Typical Apple sheep tunnel way of thinking, incapable of looking outside of the Apple's world view. Qualcomm has been making ARM chips since before Apple. Qualcomm has been in the mobile chip market before the launch of the iPhone, and has been competing with Apple in that space ever since by making chips which power billions of Android smartphones. Qualcomm also have their own custom ARM design, they first started with kryo soon after Apple did it. The main reason as to why Qualcomm wasn't competing with Apple in laptop market for so long was because as you pointed out they were lacking in the software department with Windows
I'm very excited and hopeful that those chips succeed. An ARM laptop that can run Linux natively would be a gamechanger for a lot of people, who, like myself, have no choice but to use MacOS now, due to the insane power efficiency of M-series. And success of Windows on ARM will eventually lead to more consumer and low-end server hardware based around ARM, which is wonderful for healthy competition (and most importantly my power bill).
The first-gen X Elite will belly-flop. There'll be a ton of first-gen issues, it won't perform well, and Windows will run like a dog (because it's a bloated OS).
I dont think the Airpods and especially the Sonys have anything on the Bathys in any genre really. The Airpods are tinny as fuck with a squished high-end and Sonys are a bloated bass-heavy mess with really no resolution in instruments. Get the Bathys in all cases.
