This is my channel that I created to post my videos on my salt water tank and the ups / downs of the journey. Looking forward to reading your comments and answering your questions.
Hi there. My phosphate is now .06 as of Monday so it's back to where I think it should be. Nitrates dropped due to my water change but I'll get them back up. Thanks for watching.
Hey Mike! I really like it. Other than I had to replace the motor a month ago (which I think is wear and tear) it has been flawless. I have seen comments from people that have had bad motors a lot sooner though. Not sure why or why mine lasted so much longer. I think the motor was $30 CAD to replace but I'm ok with that, Keeps the sump really clean and you don't get all the ditritus build up. I'm glad I got it. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
@@My525XLRedSeaReefer I appreciate the feedback! I may just have to get one. Do you think I should just get the 500 or go big with the 1200? My tank is like 130 total gallons..
Hi Eric, sorry to hear about your seahorse after everything you tried, will you be able to replace him and put another one in along with the existing one, the 525 is looking good and hopefully keeps on improving keep on with the videos and happy reefing
Hey Jim. Hope you are keeping well! Yes I was hoping I could save it. Not sure how long it will take until the LFS will get more. Haven't seen any in stock since May of this year. Thank you and thanks for watching!
Hey Eric. Sorry your still fighting this battle. I feel your pain. I was reading through some of the comments and the suggestion about the UV bulb is a good suggestion. We often neglect it because it just works. I used to run mine 24/7 as well, until i started carbon dosing and focusing on my micro biome health. Since I started carbon dosing I have actually turned off my UV sterilizer. It not only kills off unwanted things in the water but it also kills off the good bacteria as well. I still keep it and only run it if I have an issue. With that said you may want to consider reducing the amount of on time as it is killing off your good bacteria that will help fight against algae. Another thing I just thought of is if your using a refugium and if I remember correctly I believe you are. Something you could do is adjust your lighting schedule on the refugium to run longer giving the macro algae a longer photo period causing it to out compete the algae in the aquarium for nutrients to grow. I actually run my refugium light for 18 hours and off for 6. Just don't run it 24/7 because the algae needs a break from the photo period to complete photosynthesis process. I currently have a few small tuffs of GHA in my aquarium but that is my own fault. I let my reef get away from me during the month of Aug. Just got busy and the tank suffered for it. I am getting the tank back in shape and things are improving. I am expecting some new coral this week and I also got some Nudibranchs to help take care of some Aptasia that is becoming a problem. It has infested my Zoa garden and is stinging the Zoa's. Sorry for the long comment. I wish you good luck with your algae battle.
Hey there, Thank you for letting me know. I just replaced the bulb this past weekend but have not turned it on yet. I too have read up on using the UV. Iw as a big help when I had Dinos and never stopped using it. I could probably reduce the time as well. Thank you for watching! Please don't apologize for the long comment and i really appreciate all the information! Thank you again!
Same problem for months, ran an icp po4 was .02 no3 was .65. Got a sea hare to clear out the algae and got tropic Marin np plus and brightwell neonitro to raise both levels (no3 to 10 and po4 to .05) been a few month now and no more dosing and my nutrients leveled out
If you want colorful & healthy corals, you need Nitrate & Phosphate. If you have Nitrate & Phosphate, you will have algae. Don’t forget that what keeps our corals alive, is algae! I prefer a ratio of 100 Nitrate to 1 Phosphate. You’re really close to that, but a little high on the Nitrate. With a Phosphate of 0.04, I’d target a Nitrate of 4. This ratio to me seems to keep algae growth very low and slow.
Hi there, yes a very good point! Much appreciated! I'm still trying to get the tank regulated again.. taking a while but I don't want to rush it. Thanks for watching!
Hey there. Yes I need to get it under a microscope and post it. I even bought new glass slides but I need to take the time and look at it :) work always gets int he way. Calcium is on the low side for sure.. even though I'm using the Neptune to test. Thank you for watching!
Hey bud. I see the flame angel there and wondering if you ever have any problem w him Nipping on any corals. I’m thinking about getting one. Thanks and happy reefing !
Hey man. Yes I have had it for a number of years now. No issues at all. He does get a little territorial with some of the other fish once in a while but I thinks that's normal. It leaves the corals alone. Thank you for watching!
@My525XLRedSeaReefer At 24/7 most uv bulbs reach half life at about 6 months..and often we run slightly under powered setups to begin with. When I had your exact problem I installed a 500g capacity uv for a 120g tank and it very much helped.
@@semisuccessfulreefer220 You know I never thought of that! Funny because I thought I had to lower the flow rate on the pump for the UV as i thought maybe it was too fast and thus not as effective. I did not think of the bulb as I figured it's not quite a year old yet. Thank you for that!! Going to see if I can get a bulb this weekend. Thank you again!
You are over feeding the light Reduce the light intensity 20-30% and light photo period toh 6-7 hours (including ramp up and down), dose some aqua forest life source once a week for 1.5 months, maybe dose some bio digest once a week and live phyto
Hi there, thank you for the suggestions. I have reduced my lighting to 43% at peak period but I am still running a little long at 10 hours... need to reduce that a bit I think. I Have never used aqua forest life but will start googling it to see what it's all about. Thank you for watching!
Hey there, Yes it's really growing nicely. I wasn't expecting it to grow so fast! Ok thanks for the confirmation on the birds nest. That's what I have been reading.. too bad really.. it's a nice and easy piece to grow. I might frag some off and see how it does. Thanks for watching!
Hi again and thanks for update ! yes we hobbyists work a lot and we are sometimes lazy about parameters testing, it' s unforgiving in marine tanks. Cyano bacteria are toxic on long term for sensitive organism, i still have some patch on my sand bed, but nothing scaring about, but i noted it s where fish poo frequently, . As i keep nitrate at 5-7 ppm and phosphate at .05 ppm in a mixed macro algae sps tank i will have to siphon those cyanobacteria patch once or twice a week, i see no other options for now and you ?
@@My525XLRedSeaReefer no problem been doing this for a while. The thing is birdnest corals don’t encrust so people just take out colonies and break or cut off dead parts and then put back in tank
Hey there my friend. Hope you are doing well! I actually have one (Seneye) that I use. Been googling around and this seems to be common on this coral. Thank you for watching :)
Sup bud. Happy Friday! Hey, your calcium is a bit low eh - 397? Bring it up to 425-450. Other than that your parameters are same as mine. Sorry and hope the seahorse get well soon. Happy Friday and a great Labor Day !
Hey there, Yes I have been experience a low swing for some reason .. I'm usually around 400-420. Are your nitrates as low as mine? My AFR pump lines was plugged so wasn't dosing. Always something. Happy Friday and hope you have a great weekend! Thank you for watching!
@@semisuccessfulreefer220 Hey there! Hope you are keeping well! Uugh man I was hoping these wold be the 3-4 year lifespan. I'm not giving up on it though. I have been feeding it with a pipit so the food goes right next to it. Seems to eat although not as much as the other one. Also notice a LOT of bristle worms so wondering if it has been stung? I added an arrow crab yesterday to help with that. Crossing my fingers.
I second the Dinos. I had the same exact stuff. Was only on the sand and rocks. I’d recommend taking a sample under a microscope. I got a cheap one on Amazon. I dosed silicates to promote a diatom bloom which eventually out competed them.
@@My525XLRedSeaReefer well acropora does not last long in it :). It is a fish tank that i someday hope to have coral. 11 tangs, 2 Angel, pair of clowns. Trochus and tuxedo for inverts. There is zero algae waving around with all those tangs. I’m going to try carbon dosing soon. The fish are happy, I feed way too much nori and they approve
Hey there, the seahorse is 1 year. This little guy had gas bubble disease a few months back which I was able to help with but not sure what's happening now. Thank you for watching!
Hi Eric another great video, tank looks to be getting back to normal so something you're doing is working, keeping my fingers crossed for the seahorse getting better and you're collection is fantastic keep up the good work, happy reefing and have a good weekend
Hey Jim! yes I'm hoping it's turning in a positive direction now. Not sure whats happening with the seahorse but keeping an eye on it every day. Thank you for watching!
It's all good! There's a few things you can do. You can dose Brightwells Neo Nitro - i dose 10ml a day in my tank and keeps Nitrates stable right where i want them. Secondly, you should get some snails and or a tuxedo urchin. I'm not quite sure i saw much or any in the video, but they'll def help prevent it from coming back again if your nutrients were to drop. A small conch snail or naseriths are great because they'll churn the sandbed for you, keeping the cyano in the water column. Third thing to do is put some copepods in there, dose a little phyto each day. They'll get in all those impossible places and keep your tank free from it. Lastly, and what i do for simplicity... Add Dr. Tims waste away gel sticks in your sump. I think you get around 30 days or more per stick and it naturally adds beneficial bacteria. It's the same as microbacter 7 but a hands off approach. Also would help to keep your skimmer off for 4 hours a day, this way it's not pulling out that good bacteria 24/7. You'll get it!
Hey there, thank you so much for all the feedback. I really appreciated it! I have 3 large turbo snails and an urchin in there. They seem to be busy these days. Copepods is something I did not think of so thank you. Curious about the waste away gel sticks... are you using them as well? Thanklyou for watching!
You can increase nitrates by simply increasing your feeding, maybe run your protein skimmer 50% if you have one. Just be careful not to overdo it, once your nitrates get over 10 ppm, some of your more sensitive LPS and SPS corals can die off. When I had dinos doing that, and reducing the lighting, as well as adding some Brightwell microbacter7 did the trick. Just be patient with it, and don't shock your parameters with large moves, it takes weeks and sometimes months to get rid of dinos.
hey there, I have reduced the LEDs now. Skimmer only runs during the day. My nitrates are staring to rise slowly .. so far so good!! :) Thanks for replying and watching!
Try do dose bacteria im dosing Aquaforest bios and np pro daily + more flow in your tank will help , and if you want to stay with a sand bed you will need a bigger clean up crew for it . Couch snail are amazing and nassarius snail i have 6 nassarius and 2 couch in a 120g . And to spread that shit in the water columb only vaccum the top of the sand bed you dont want to remove good stuff from the sand . Good luck !
Hey there, yes had a few recommendations on the conch. Checked on line today and my FFS has a few so might be a trio on the weekend. Thanks for the information and thanks for watching!
@@My525XLRedSeaReefer snail will not solve your actual problème, you will need to remove it , its a bacteria not algae doze good bacteria and crank or change your flow /add power head if needed
@@davidcastonguay2069 Hey there, I will be moving the power heads lower on the sides in the next day or so. I just don't want to blast the sand bed all over the place. Thanks for watching!
I being battling Dinos for a month now, and they look just like yours, I increase my temperature to 82 degrees and now I can see the light at the end of the tunnel
