Just another day on the jobsite installing hardscapes. Cutting, digging or picking up materials at various suppliers. This is what it takes to install a residential driveway, walkway, retaining wall or backyard retreat.

I’m removing regular sand and want to put polymeric sand in . Should I tamp it down ? And can that be done by hand or should it be done with tamping machine ?
@GarryReisky
@GarryReisky 10 месяцев назад
Most polymeric sands need vibration to get the air out so the sand can achieve optimal strength. If you have a small area you can use a hand tamper, a rubber hammer, a piece of wood with with some type of hammer to hit the pavers so you create vibration to remove the air in the sand. If it's a larger area than a plate compactor with or without protective pad (if you have textured pavers than you need the protective pad) would be best, or a roller compactor. If you can't find a plate compactor with the pad you can use plywood.

Great video. Than you. We just had to remove our joint sand and replace. One question. Over time the polymeric sand does fail correct? We do not think the contractor sealed our patio when it was originally done. We want to seal but will we still be able to pressure wash it out if years down the road it needs replaced again? Thank you - Tonni

I just water-proofed my north wall in the beaches. Once the Excavator was done, I rented a jumping jack compactor and we compacted the sand best we could, now I’m onto lime stone screening, I’ve already laid my first layer. Now I’m wondering if I should switch my aggregate and Can I just leave it on top of my lime stone

If you have proper slope (⅛ per foot) limestone screening is a fantastic sub base material for small low traffic areas. Absolutely nothing wrong with limestone screenings

Thank you so much Garry! You saved me from whitecapping my newly installed paver patio. I had rented a plate compactor for the gravel layer, and was about to go out and use it on my contoured pavers. Thanks to you, I rented a paver roller, which has rollers on the bottom and vibrates with enough force to compact the pavers and get polymeric sand to fill the joints. Thanks again, I would have been very upset if I ruined this patio that I've been working so hard to build!

Personally speaking I've never used what the big box stores sell. We use what our stone supply/dealers sell. My local dealers stock, techniseal, alliance gator and evolution.

I can’t find any place that sells Techniseal products. I’m in California. Even Amazon has only tinted sealer available. I can’t even buy directly off Techniseal’s website. Their website also lists Ace Hardware as a place to buy, but there are no Techniseal products on Ace Hardware’s website. Where do you buy these products?

Good afternoon Gary. Definetely a great job on improving the previous contractor's poor job. I am planning on doing the same thing for my driveway and patio and had a question. Which sealer would be the best option for both type of pavers?, I have concrete in my driveway and limestone in my patio.
@GarryReisky

For concrete and concrete pavers and natural stone there are specific products for them. Check with techniseal or Alliance to see what they have.

Can you apply polymeric sand over polymeric sand? We used polymeric sand on our pavers last year. Some of it is falling away, maybe down 1/4 inch in some spots. Can we put polymeric sand over polymeric sand? Thanks for any help!
@GarryReisky
@GarryReisky 4 года назад
You need a minimum of 1" , if you put a 1/4" on it will peel off like spaghetti.
@chasC3519
@chasC3519 4 года назад
Yes for sure. The finished job should have the sand 1/4 to3/8 below the pavers, not level with the paver
@jmahtab
@jmahtab 4 года назад
Wouldn't the pressure washer disturb the base beneath the pavers? Will the sand fill those voids?
@GarryReisky
@GarryReisky 4 года назад
You would really have to hold the pressure washer in one place for some time for it to effect the bedding layer. I've pulled stones out to see if there is any removal of bedding sand and there isn't.

Hi, I have the quartz stone with thin and thick variations. My first pallet were mostly thicker than one inch pieces and the second pallet was less than an inch. I hadn't realized they were so different in thickness. Is it possible to use both pallets to cover the square footage I had planned for a patio? Is that possible? Thank you!
@GarryReisky
@GarryReisky 4 года назад
Yes, you will have to adjust your settings bed thickness and set every stone individually so you don't have any high and low edges. A setting bed could be a gravel chip, concrete sand or concrete sand and cement.

I'm so freaking confused...putting in a back patio...I have dug out at least 6 inches of what appears to be granular a. I was going to tamp, add back 2 inches, tamp...add 2 more inches, tamp, and then add 2 inches of limestone, then tamp...and another inch of limestone, and tamp. Now I have to again wonder....what the hell is the absolute defacto way to lay large 2x2 patio stones or slabs?
@GarryReisky
@GarryReisky 5 лет назад
The defacto standard would be larger gravel below, crusher run or granular a, basically 3/4" gravel with mixed sizes , down to fines. On top of that would be 1" concrete sand, 1", not 1 1/2, not 2" , 1". There is a trend right now towards 'open graded' base, this is 3/4" clear gravel with 1" #8 or hpb. Now to confuse the matters even more there is synthetic base, bit icpi isn't done with their spec for synthetic base and partially on board with open graded for non permeable applications.
@lgmnowkondo938
@lgmnowkondo938 5 лет назад
@@GarryReisky Thank you sir...but I'm still a bit confused...but I'm just kinda like that. My base is already mixed gravel...3/4 down to fines...so should I tamp it 2 inches at a time, then do one inch of concrete sand untamped, then add the patio slabs, then tamp the slabs followed by polymeric sand in the joints? Is concrete sand also known as sharp sand?
@GarryReisky
@GarryReisky 5 лет назад
@@lgmnowkondo938 Comcrete sand would be your sharp sand. You could use conduit or 1" pipe to level the sand, than lay pavers. Compaction on slabs is best with a roller compactor, if you don't have one you might have to use the plywood system. Compact on top of plywood so you don't create damage.

What is the vacuum brand and model that you use?
@GarryReisky
@GarryReisky 5 лет назад
At this time it was a Bosch 3931a, this was replaced with a Bosch vac090s, and the current dust extractor we use is a Husqvarna s13. The Husqvarna works extremely well and the filter and bags are easy to clean and maintain. If you have the power the Husqvarna s26 would handle everything you throw at it but it needs 20 amp. You can find a lot of videos about this unit under Pullman ermator with the same model numbers. Husqvarna bought Pullman ermator.
