What about a leaky valve, i performed same test and they all past 20 but dont hold it for more than 4seconds? Is that normal? Intake side holds perfectly fine the vacuum but not exhaust side?
If it doesn't hold it consistently you need to do a little investigation work to find out why. As you see in this video when they are sealed up the vacuum stays steady at 20 inches, and the suction pad is hard to get off. It doesn't take the valve and valve seat much to be out of concentric and they will not seal.
@@dcimotorsports1111 right on, thank you boss man. Head came out the machine shop with fresh valve job but seems they didn't do a good job on the exhaust side then, again thank you. Will talk to them so they can address the issue.
No need to x ray, I made sure the water is way far away from the ports. The only exception are the end exhaust ports. There is water on the outside wall of the ports right behind the end freeze plugs, but there is still plenty of material even there. The only time those become a problem is when we move the exhaust valves out .060" and we get carried away porting on that wall.
What was your first ram air v engine build ? Did anyone ever run this on the street in the 70s or any pontiac mules running around back then . Where the originals any good for the street ? curious . (yellow 78ta 455 4spd build) project... love the channel !!
My first ever RA5 build was about 30 years ago for a local drag racer. He had a 68 GTO bracket car that I built a 428 with Factory RA5 iron heads. It ran pretty good, but not a huge difference from his D Port 48's. He ran high elevens with the D Ports and mid elevens with the RA5's. Thanks for supporting and following our channel :)
Hello, my best wishes to everyone. I thought of a topic for a future podcast. I've always wanted to run a gear to gear timing drive on a PONCHO. U don't hear much about this. Is there a reason why true roller timing chains are more popular other than cost?
Are u referring 2 Gear Drives 4 replacement of True Timing Chains ⛓️ If so l am with U on this One . Don had better put his Skates ⛸️ 🛼 🛹 ⛷️ On & get this Product 2 Market 4 the Poncho 455 cu inch thru 2 the 565 cu inch combo Maybe able 2 adapt a BBC one . Would be worth serious consideration 👌 😅 Robert 🇦🇺 Australia 🇦🇺 😅
@@Robert-mn8gc There are a few gear to gear timing drives available for PONTIACS. The one i want is the MILODON #13900 that has three- gears instead of the noisy four-gear setup.
@pontiacexcitement4evrponti995 Thx 4 sharing that bit of Tech . Would love ❤️ 2 have the Spare Funds 4 Don from DCI 2 build 😀 me a 565 all Aluminium Blown ( Supercharger with MOAC Intercooler with the Cupronickel Intercooler from Whipple ) Don said that he has a 565 cu inch for a customer 1825 hp running on E85 . With his Ram Air 5 Heads , over 500+ cfm
@@dcimotorsports1111 Thanks I love the tech talk. I hope to build a 69 Lemans or GTO next year. I was planning on LS swapping it but turbocharging a Pontiac engine just seems toi tempting to resist
I use Belzona 1111 epoxy which hardens like steel and machines like steel. Check out my Facebook page under my name Don Johnston. I just posted some pic's updating the project with the epoxy in the ports.
Thank U SIR, for the KUDOS !!! We have been doing this so long now that we get to see engines we built for refreshes and almost all of them we could re use the bearings. Obviously we don't, but the point is they show no bearing wear hardly at all after even 90,000 miles which pretty amazing :)
Well that's kind of a loaded question. With stock bolts, and stock type head gaskets, around 20 PSI. More importantly though is the tune. If its out just a little it will not tolerate 10 PSI. If professionally prepared and cylinders are o ringed, copper head gaskets, high strength studs and properly tuned as high as 50 PSI.
@@dcimotorsports1111 why didn't you just grind through the head bolt, pushrod, and sleeve them ? Now what, epoxy, or furnace braze ? Where did you hit the water jacket ?
@@tunnelportterror We probably will tube the head bolts, but the push rods I'm moving them out about a .150". So we will just machine the heads for the new push rod locations.
@@tunnelportterror Both sides of the intake bowls, but that was intentional. The cross section is way to small on factory heads and I have a really good epoxy that we use now. So I know I can fix the intake side without worrying about not being able to seal them up.
Don , U mentioned on a RU-vid clip that l watched 👀 a few days back that one of Ur customers had a 565 cu inches with Ur Ram 🐏 Air 5 Heads making 1825 hp @ 18lbs of Boost . Super Impressive 👌 Running on e85 . Imagine that same engine with the MOAC Biggest Whipple Cupronickel Intercooler between the intake manifold & blower . Pretty sure u stated it was a 1471 , With the latest 3.8 ltr Whipple Superchargers it would be even more 😅😅 & the Whipple Intercooler/Supercharger Package 📦 Awesome 👌 would make even more . Do u know how much TQ that particular engine is making . U also said that other manufacturers had better heads & aren't making as much Grunt 😅 were u being just cheeky or having a proper dig @ them . ??? Robert 🇦🇺 Australia 🇦🇺 😅has 😅
I'm serious when I say other brands cannot equal my RA5's. I looked for several hours on the internet to try and find something comparable with no luck. Closest I found was around 1300 HP without nitrous. This RA5 engine made around 1410 TQ at 5400. Just think what this engine would do on methanol and 40 PSI 🤪
Very cool video with a LOT of great information. Loved listening, Don. Pricing isn't outrageous, compared to a fully ported E-head. I missed the live stream, so I'll ask my dumb question: With the raised exhaust port, I'm assuming you'll have to have custom headers built, correct? Not too many RAV headers available, anyways, I guess!
Thank You for the KUDOS :) Yes they do require a special header and we do have them for 68 to 72 A Body, 67 to 69 F Body, and 70 to 81 F Body. We are in the process of building prototype headers for the 64 to 67 A Body's too.
@@dcimotorsports1111 Thx Don . Robert Australia 🇦🇺 How many Cu Inch. I can't recall. And is this the Engine with the very narrow lobe centre line ? Like 106 or 108 ?
Well if the Engine is really high performance & going in a Californian Lake Rocket 🚀 like a Beismeyer Flat Bottom or Eliminator Daytona Jet Boat It's Gotta be Dry Sump . If it's a street car a wet sump , if it's big HP street car , the option of dry sump is worth a Consideration 😅
Don you should build a transparent oil pan even you might be surprised on what is happening inside a running engine and we all could watch it under load you could tell what is happening with 3 eighth clearance may be interesting
The " springy thingy " is a digital caliper. .000 to 1.000. Good for measuring things ...in High speed production. ( am I being too subtle Don ? ) the other thingies are " inside bore gauges ". The dial indicator is good enough for shop use... don't lock that one up in YOUR tool box. It was meant for everyone. So, was the mics and magnetic stand. ( the stand could use a little cleaning up. ) I also sent some mill cutting heads.... hope you can use them. The generosity... is a southern thing. We're all good people down here.
Classics like this Cadillac and your Pontiac had personality back in the day. Not only appearance but under the hoods too. I am so glad I got to grow up in this era and experience what many now consider the Golden years of Automobiles.
Your wish is our command :). When I get the new heads I hope to put a set on my Brothers 62 Catalina which currently has a set of my 280 cfm ported iron heads. Not only will we get to see the rear wheel HP difference, but on track ET too.
@@dcimotorsports1111 Awesome. I was subscriber to High Performance Pontiac magazine for 20 years and they never did any comparison of aftermarket vs ported iron heads and never showed a serious build with race ported iron heads.
@@tomsettles6873 You probably seen some of my old ads from back in the day that magazine :) Ive been in business now 43 years which is hard for me to believe 🤪
