lux 35 and 50 both are terrible lenses once you're off a hint off centre image is a smudge no matter of aperture 1.4-5.6 on top of that image degrades with distance .place a face of a human at 2/3 of a frame at 15-20 meters put BOLO (wanted / at large) on it - nobody would ever recognize that person . ive had 3 copies of 50 lux all new including close focus - they are same trash . Ive stuck with apo . @georges_angeles

Okay, maybe it's me. I'm not sure which one of these I have the most trouble with. Shall we start with the duplicated intro? This video of comparing "old school to new school" was pretty useless (sorry to say). There were no controls spelled out including different camera, but same lenses, same settings, same ISO (which ISO was used wasn't displayed on the file, or spoken), no comparison of noise at higher ISOs (i.e. low light shooting), use of LiveView (since this was a big improvement in the D850), side by side RAW shots (only scale changed D700 shots as JPG), lighting, white balance, picture controls? What was controlled for in this video? Bike movement? Seriously, then we have to see an unedited video of the guy's A##? That pretty much says it all.

D700 sensor offers better results for my eyes. And that 85mm is not the best lens of the trial. Love that camera, it'll probably be my last digital unless something really special comes to the market. But its sensor has a special characteristic which will probably never be surpassed in FF: the largest pixels EVER on a sensor - any camera size sensor! That's why it had only 12 MP but whose enlarging capabilities are incredible. I've seen prints with more than a meter wide, VERY nice. Of course it doesn't have the resolution of a 45MP at this size, but it doesn't lose detail, jag (stairs)which gives it that film like many mentions. I shoot film since the 1970's, the D700 is the closest I've seen. My definitive digital. Love it! Thanks for the video! A very enlightening comparison! All the best!

Mainly I shoot film, but I have a few digital. D700 is my favourite. Even being digital it keeps reality on a photo. I love it! D300 also... 85mm great lenses. But for a third of the price an 100mm series E it's an incredible lenses.

With modern digital sensors, the extra stop is only useful for slightly more background blur, and if that’s the case, the 35/1.4 is the way to go. Conclusion: The 28/2 is not worth twice the price and bigger size compared to the 28/2.8.

An interesting test that confirms my opinion - it doesn’t matter how you shoot - film or digital, what matters is whether you shoot well. You correctly noted that shooting on film is slower - you start to think more. On the other hand, shooting with a digital Leica is also slower than with an automatic Sony, but we like to slow down time sometimes. Good luck!

Yes, the "S" class Z lenses are significantly better than most F-mount counterparts. The comparison between of the D500 to the Z f violates the "ceteris paribus" requirement that we want in science as a way to explore the effect of one variable. So we set up an experiment in which one variable or parameter varies and "the others stay the same" ("ceteris paribus"). That said, Nikon seems to have done something magical to the OLPF in the Z f, or in its processing of the raw image data before it gets on the memory card. The buzzword here is that OLPF. "Optical Low Pass Filter" (also called AA - anti-aliasing - filter). The OLPF was introduced into the Bayer paradigm to make raw processing (conversion) easier on that software, in times when processing power was expensive, big, heavy and needed a lot of energy. The best known supercomputer from 1990 - Cray One - probably had its own building, its own support staff, its own connection to the grid, and weighed a lot. That same processing power, say 5 years back, could be bought in the form of two NVIDIA GTX 1080ti graphics cards. This means we don't really need the OLPF any longer, provided software developers take the trouble, make the effort, to adapt their raw processing to the absence of an OLPF. After all, they started programming with the assumption that it was there. And the Bayer paradigm started with resolutions so low, that absence of the OLPF did not matter. So there must be a resolution zone in which it has been beneficial. If developers don't adapt the software to the absence of the OLPF, then they violate the silent agreement in the Bayer paradigm where each photosite shoots only one spectral colour band and consequently generates a monochrome data element. Each monochrome data element then must be converted into an RGB pixel by guessing the missing colours. Basically, what gets called "colour noise" and "luminance noise", could equally well be called "Bayer noise" as it follows from insufficient or inadequate deBayerisation of the raw image - doing a bad job at the guessing of missing colours. The first, I think, to address this issue, was Topaz with their add-on program "DeNoise AI". This then was followed by DxO when they added "DeepPRIME" into their PhotoLab app (that competes with LrC and ACR). As a photographer needs Photoshop (Ps) anyway, they subscribe to ACR, LrC, and Ps, so chances of selling licenses to PhotoLab being reduced by that, DxO span DeepPRIME out into an add-on program that offers it stand-alone: PureRAW. In this context, ACR was Johnny come lately, as the Mudbricks added their noise treatment options (extended deBayerisation) to ACR in 2023. At that time, however, they had not fixed their ugly generation of artefacts (e.g. crinkly lines). The OLPF helps to make raw processing easier, but beyond a certain resolution, its cons get in the way [1]. Nikon realised this and in 2012 they Eliminated the OLPF from the D800E version of their D800. Both 36MP, both identical except for the OLPF in there or not - ceteris paribus. So for Nikon the turning point is at 36MP and any (FF) above that has no OLPF, anything under that has an OLPF. The Z f, and Z 6, Z 6ii, Z 6iii, like a D750 and other FF cameras all have an OLPF. The 45MP FF Nikons never have an OLPF. As this is about photosite density, and the D500 is in the ballpark of 45MP FF density, the D500 does not have an OLPF either in line with Nikon's internal guidelines. The video being about D500 versus FF mirrorless Z camera - try to rent a Z 7(ii), Z 8, or Z 9 with a 45MP sensor and as these have no OLPF like the D500 that's a fair comparison. Run them in DX mode, even, potentially with your DX lens on an FTZ(ii) adapter on these ML cameras. [1] The OLPF has the following pros & cons: Pros - (a) makes raw processing easier: mathematically precise and repeatable wild-assed guessing of missing colours. Cons - (b) its light dispersion of light travelling to photosite [x,y] so a fraction also hits the neighbours thereof, causes loss of (contour) sharpness. (c) It also causes reduction of colour space. (d) Less good low light sensitivity. (e) Reduction of dynamic range (DR). (f) Reduction of contrast envelope (DR in one shot). and (g) it messes with vignetting.

Now, after seeing this c video of yours I subscribed to your channel right a way! I mean, nobody here is talking about the sinergy between the camera and the lenses. It has always been the same, first the lens and then the right camera and the only one to break that rule is the D700! Even with modern Nikon S glass the pictures still look much more organic then the Z cameras with the Z glass which lean much more toward the analytic and cool Zeiss approach. Put the Voigtländer Nokton 58mm f1.4 on the D700 and the dreams are yours ❤❤❤

Thank you for this very interesting video. The lens really plays a big role, just saw some wow photos I took of a bumblebee with the F 60mm 2.8 macro on my Z6 (my previous experience was that the z6 couldn't focus on animals, guess my shutter speed was set too low all the time). Indeed the powerzooms are great for travelling with only one objective, but not the best IQ. I like to use the DX 18-200mm on the D500 when going on a bigger walk (example in the moutains) and don't know what I will find, as you can do landscape, semi-macro, some tele, etc. Even has VR. IQ is pretty good-ok but you never get the wow factor. But the D500 still is a wonderful camera nowadays and very cheap! And standard enel15 batteries are cheap and compatible with Z6, etc.

After using the q2 mono and owning the q2 which do you think is better? I’m gonna be using it for backstage photography. I travel and play music all over the world and usually bring my canon r6 and Fuji x100v but I find myself not wanting to lug around the canon when I’m having moments hanging out with my band and others. The Fuji is great for this but full frame would be better in my opinion. I would probably get the q2 color but I find myself in low light pretty regularly. Do you think high iso would be ok with the regular version? I do convert my images to black and white often. Anyway great shots and video.

So I decided on the M10 Monochrom over the Q2 Mono. So now I have the Q2 Reporter. I do like burning my colour bridges using the M10M. I chose the M10M to give my flexibility in lens choice. I would imagine, back stage you would benefit from a 21mm lens or wider sometimes. Or portrait 50mm lens. Let me know what you decide. I think the Q2 colour in low light back stage is more than adequate.

A Nikon LS5000 Coolscan produces a 4000 dpi image of a 35mm slide measuring 4000 x 6000 pixels at around 21 mbs. A camera scan with the ES2 and D850 produces a 8256 x 5504 pixel file at 45 mbs. Does this mean the camera scan image is better than the scanner file?
@Adventure8
@Adventure8 29 дней назад
I think either methods are fine. The limitation is the film I think. I’m not an expert on scanning. The few times I scanned I found the process slow. My preference is to use my D850 to re-photograph my Kodachrome or B&W negatives. I haven’t found a good way to reproduce a good image out of colour negatives.

Wow- so this is a bit late- if you see this comment- great- as an owner of the D700 since 2007 and the D850- 2023 and Z8- 2023…. And I have the 70-200 F mount and my 85 1.4 is the D… so right after the AIS?…… I have to go with the D700 as the winner.. with the D850 a close second…… honestly all your shots were beautiful…. I was most impressed with your settings- both D700 and 850- you were at base ISO… and shot wide open- every shot was wonderful- I think - the Z shots were auto ISO?… anyway… wonderful comparison…… I am at Lake Tahoe (June 2024) right now - looking out - on to the beautiful lake…. And it brings back memories- to the first time I really worked my 85mm 1.4 lens on my D700… at night- on the Cabin deck…. Overlooking the lake late at night- with a full moon…. It was at that point - that I understood what it meant about “having great glass”…… I was blown away - with the moons reflection off the lake…. And how the boats moored on bouies- (I know I misspelled) were bright and shiny- the deck was about 600 feet above the lake- I was in love with my 85….. thank you for reminding me to never sell my D700- or any of my F glass…….. cheers

I think the most value of these lens comparisons is to understand the behaviour of the lens you have (or want to get) and then work out how best to use the lens to support your photography and creativity. All the lenses in this video are great. I'm a sucker for gear acquisition but if I had to choose one lens, the main criteria of choice would be, budget, size of lens, manual or auto and character of lens for my creativity. Hope that helps.

At 1.2 you didn't get the focus at the same position, hence the different results. At 11:00 you can clearly verify that the 58mm was focusing at the rear fairing and the 50mm was at the front fairing - just look at the front bolts that attach the polycarbonate to the fairing. They are very well defined vs not at all on the 58.
