I wish that with Cranky being 1981 DK and being DK's grandfather, they made Jumpman Mario's grandfather and we could have a story about the Mario's and Kong's being enemies for generations and Mario and DK broke the cycle of them being enemies
@Eris1987

I mean Mario does make peace with them during the Game & Watch games, hence by Super Mario Kart and Mario's Tennis he is hanging out with a full grown Donkey Kong Junior. But also at the same time Mario and DK Senior weren't enemies.

Yeah it runs under the dynamic timeline but where the past is altered when one meddles in the past. I actually made blog post on this very topic. They probably brought him inside cause while Bowser is a menace they all do somewhat care about him. We do know it's accessed only by the Bowser secret society which has Bowser and Bowser Junior as part of it. Bowser while having gained new memories of the past alongside probably hearing about what happened via a Lakitu Bros. Broadcast(He was there reporting on the time machine at the being of the game), the in universe newspaper, and even for spies he has ; could have easily put 2 and 2 together. From there he found one of the existing time portals and took some troops back in time to recovery the Shroobs. The the Shroob Princesses could still be around because of people constantly meddling in the past altered it enough for them to have survived. Alternatively they could have had extra lives, that is something that is canon in universe. Wario is returned home because the stork is there with him, plus Baby Bowser is also on this raft trying to take back his treasure from the Baby Wario. Plus, he has to become Mario's childhood friend somehow. Probably a time portal, if I am correct the time portals are stated to still exist throughout the world, and since this originates from the Cobalt Star some form of magic could have been made from it. I actually have a hypothesis on what E. Gadd's meddling in the past actually did. So.... Kamek in Partner's In Time says he remembers kidnapping the Baby Bros. once, when he has at least 2 times. It's because this is the first time anyone has time traveled and altered the past. Meanwhile games like Yoshi's Island DS and Yoshi's New Island involve time traveling and active meddling in the past thus altering the past, making it where the events of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is not the only time Kamek has kidnapped the Baby Bros. Yoshi's Island DS in particular only recalls the events of the first game thus the Yoshi's New Island time travel hadn't happened yet.

I don't believe so. There's nothing that really supports such an idea and given Bowser's been around for nearly 40 years, I think Nintendo would have given us such an answer at some point. You could argue that Koopas know how to design clothes that can be worn in that fashion or that he uses magic to put them on.
@Eris1987
@Eris1987 Месяц назад
Correct... This is also not a one time thing, we see it in other games. In Dr. Mario World with Dr. Bowser. We see it in Bowser's outfit for Mario Strikers: Battle League. We even see it in his outfit for Mario Golf: Super Rush. It is a consistent detail showing the obvious without having to outright say Bowser can take his shell off. An extra bit off info is Bowser's model in basically ever game has his shell as detached from his back. The video LEGIT Bowsers Back Hidden For At Least 17 Years - Boundary Break has some prime examples for it and is where these visuals come from. Bowser Junior's shell is also separate from his body. The only exception to this is Bowser's Smash Bros model, which as we know Smash Bros is not canon. While the Toad models instead of having Toad's cap separate have it as attached. This is also why see Bowser swap out his shell of other shells like other turtles do. As evident by his equipable shells such as the Ironclad Shell, King Shell, Heal Shell, Fire Shell, and and Courage Shells. We know things like different clothing, items, and gear is literal. We also know Bowser puts his shell on loan in Mario Kart like how Koopa(NokoNoko) and Spiny Shells are created for Mario Kart events by Shell Strike Equipment.

The Mario Party games are confirmed to be canon. There aren’t any inconsistencies within them so I don’t see why you would write them off. Notably, in Mario Party 10 there’s clearly a magical transformation beneath the lava when Bowser becomes Dry Bowser, as indicated by the glow. His skin likely doesn’t burn off in that instance.

@bruleebaby I'll be honest, the more I think about this video, the more I hate it. I understand that people can have (innocent) crushes on people older than them. The way I see it, it's more of a 50/50 with Mona's admiration as it can be a crush but also her looking up to Wario's accomplishments. Mona's not the type of character to act insane over a relationship she can't achieve unlike some fictional characters. With this video, I believe I could have still made the points I made if it the main topic was "Why a relationship between Wario and Mona couldn't work" but that was not the case. I can't rename the video that because the part of the video that could explain that doesn't exist. I wrote this script months before I started making videos again and even I don't think I got a good message across. I think I was too focused on the fact that people were actually shipping Wario with a minor and some even calling him a groomer while writing this. (You don't want to know where I've heard that from) I'm gonna mark this video as old as the main idea doesn't align with my current thoughts and I might consider remaking it in the future. But a this point, I don't see the point in making a video like that at all. I appreciate your feedback and thank you for watching the video, even if you didn't like it. I hope you'll find something else on this channel that is to you're liking.

While this is somewhat irrelevant, Dry Bowser is heavily alluded to be a form a "magic failsafe" in the few appearences he has made in canon, since in NSMB DS we see Kamek/BJ have to take time before deploying the tactical dead turtle. If I had to guess, it is a form that is meant to allow Bowser to fight longer and stay alive without any of the biogical limitations he normally has. I doubt simply falling into Lava causes the transformation, but likely acts as a catalyst for it.

Meeting the right conditions like with Giant Bowser. Also, given the existence of Big Tail Goombas in Bowser's Minions, this would place SM3DL before SuperStar Saga. Since SM3DL is the first time Bowser gives his minions Super Leaves. In addition if SuperStar Saga does come before Sunshine or NSMBDS then this would mean SM3DL would be Bowser's first time becoming Dry Bowser canonically that we know of. Also, in case you would agree with the appearance of Dry Bowser in SM3DL not being canon. The post game is meant to be a continuation when Luigi gets kidnapped by the Koopa Troop and Mario must rescue him. Also, the Special Worlds could possibly be the Lost Levels. Also, when you are referring to canon are you at all implying the Party games for example aren't canon?

07:00 he does so too in Mario Party 10 (Edit: 07:44 nothing tells that the party games aren't canon and besides the Mario's world is a cartoon world so inconsistencies are bound to happen due to the cartoon logic of that world)
@Eris1987
@Eris1987 2 месяца назад
I'd have to mostly agree. The Mario world is actually a highly consistent world, and any inconsistencies have already been dealt with via easy retcons. Such as the Bowser Junior and Koopalings thing. The fact Nintendo has acknowledged a Canon of Mario Tales shows there is one to begin with. This actually makes sense give how various games reference Mario's past events either through worldbuilding, dialogue, manuals, and descriptions. I agree with you on the Party thing. In a previous post on his shell video, he tried to claim stuff I was saying didn't count because it's from the sports, party, and Kart games which he believes are inconsistent and non canon. So I mentioned to him some of the that in spite of what people would think the Party, Sports, and Kart games are intended to be canon and have never implied to not be canon. Similar to how Team Sonic Racing and Sonic Riders are meant to be canon to the "main Sonic games," so to is the kart games Canon to the Mario Tales. Nintendo establishes this all the time. _"You may know him as a famous plumber, but he’s also a kart racer, sports star, caped hero, and more! "_ "Mario excels at sports including tennis, golf, baseball, soccer, and even kart racing. He's good at all of them! He's a plumber by profession but is really a jack of all trades." "Princess Peach is always game for a variety of sports, and also enjoys baking and cooking." I while he didn't say why he thinks they are inconsistent, I went ahead and brought up the typical reasons people think they are, and showed why everything is still consistent. But finally I mentioned how if Nintendo wanted use to think these games weren't canon they would have either other right stated it like in Mario + Rabbids. Or made it obvious like the Movie does. That they would have Sunshine list of Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64 as having taken place prior. Or Luigi's diary wouldn't mention karting, party, and sports events.
@Skypatroller_BenCD
@Skypatroller_BenCD 2 месяца назад
@Eris1987 honestly I used this logic 1 spin off doesn't mean not canon 2 not acknowledging what happened in a spin off doesn't mean that the spin off isn't canon 3 we had to know the differences between minor and major inconsistencies basically minor inconsistencies are inconsistencies that exists but doesn't decanonies a game while major ones are inconsistencies that says that the game isn't canon 4 everything should be considered canon until something or the creators says otherwise (not counting crossover and educational games cause that's another can of worms)

@Eris1987 I said your statement is the equivalent of saying, "Because it's fiction, anything can happen." That is a metaphor. What I'm saying is that in response to a question, instead of providing an answer with solid evidence or speculation with reasoning to back it up, your response simply being "because they are flowers in a high fantasy setting," is no different than saying because this is fiction, anything is possible. This is also a metaphor. What I'm saying is that your answer is very simplistic and that it would not satisfy most people. Yes, Mario is a "hig fantasy world" as you put it, but that does not mean that elements about said world can not be explained beyond that. Instead of pondering the possibility of a skeletal structure based on their body structure and properties, you provided a very bare bones argument that, while technically correct, can be used to explain anything in fiction. You have shown before that you are capable of more advanced speculation with evidence than this, using what you view as internal consistency. I'm simply saying you should provide a more in-depth answer than what is essentially because the setting can allow it. This is ALSO a metaphor.
@Eris1987

@@lonedivider isn't the point of a metaphor there is a meaning behind that that can be explained by the person with the figurative language? _"Instead of providing an answer with solid evidence or speculation with reasoning to back it up."_ There is not much to speculate about, Piranha Plants simply have the features because they are in this setting. If it were a more grounded setting they wouldn't have any of this or would be some type of animal. I get _"it would not satisfy most people."_ But sometimes answers are just that simple, plus with what the person asked there isn't much to go on. In addition, Occam's Razor is a thing ya know. _"Can be used to explain anything in fiction. "_ Incorrect, if said fiction was more grounded and a form of speculative fiction piece, then it would abide more by our world's rules instead of high fantasy and or cartoon rules. Yet that is also fiction and high fantasy rules would not explain it thus not explaining anything in fiction. True, but when it comes to my speculation I typically preface as a hypothesis, thus leaving it open to alterations based on information not previously know. I would have said more to them, but that would required them to have said more. For example, if they specifically said something akin to a old outdated hypothesis I had about Piranha Plants, then I would have said more. But since they didn't I turn didn't see a need to. You know what I might as well let you know what I'm talking about. I had an old hypothesis that Piranha Plants are reptiles because they have skeletons, tongues, some lay eggs, and some even have scales. I eventually concluded my hypothesis was false based on information from the games. The things that debunked my hypothesis include the following. For starters you have the Pakkun Flower which is either a relative or alternative name for Piranha Plants. Note how it has flower in the name. Nipper Plants which are either young Piranha Plants or Piranha Plant relatives (I forgot which it was) have plant in the name and are called flowers. Ptooies are called Flowers. There is also the Piranha Plants description from the Super Mario Bros section of the Encyclopedia which refers to them as "man eating plants." In the Super Mario Bros Manual they are called man eating plants. The fact they have vines, thorns, and leaves like actual plants. The mutant Boss Piranha Plant Petey has petals. Using Goombario's tattle on the Lava Piranha Goombario uses terms such as buds, flowers, and plant to refer to the Lava Piranha. While this next one is not canon, I have noticed it has a lot of things correct about the Mario World or at least parallels. Most notable is how it came out one year after Super Mario Bros and it has the concept of Mario being on the same planet as the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario and Luigi being twins, and a prophecy about the Bros. Piranha Plants have also been called flowers in the OVA. Continuing on with canon sources. Super Mario Run calls them dangerous plants. The Gluttonous Gobbler Constellation calls them a species of carnivorous plants. Mario Party DS uses flower, bud, and plant to refer and describe a Piranha Plant. Some are used as a bouquet in Odyssey, kinda makes sense since they are flowers. You have Storm Chasers where they grow because of water. So on and so forth. In conclusion of that after I debunked my own hypothesis I concluded I was trying to impose irl logic unto the Mario World when I initially made this hypothesis, and that I shouldn't try to do this because the Mario World runs on High Fantasy rules. Plants like Toads and Goombas which are mushrooms, just simply have skeletons in this world, they aren't bound by our world's logic. Speaking of which the whole imposing real world logic onto Mario's World is sort of a problem I've noticed in various hypotheses people create. For example while I don't care for power scaling I saw someone doing it and tried to claim Mario is as fast as and or faster than Sonic because he can dodge cannonballs and lighting/light based attacks. While they could make a gameplay argument, gameplay mechanics for the cannonball and they are faster in universe. Often times these thought to be gameplay mechanics are literal in universe when it comes to Mario. Super Mario Run outright states the cannonballs are simply just that slow. As for lightning and light based attacks, it is the high fantasy thing all over again.

The Dry Bowser boss fight of the Special Worlds is more than likely canon even though it's a post credits thing. The reason is because the reason Mario heads to the Special Worlds is to rescue Luigi after Bowser kidnapped him. I also have a hypothesis the Special Worlds are the Lost Levels. If you've seen my previous response to you I explained why the karting, sports, party games are canon. So I'm not going to retread that ground here. But aside from him taking on that form in the party games, Bowser also takes on that form in New Super Mario Bros 2 Boos and Fishing Boos are ghosts. I forgot which game said it, but there is some dialogue from someone acknowledging Boos were once alive. Fishing Boos are directly stated to be the ghosts of Lakitus. Now before anyone makes a hypothesis that Boos are Koopas based on the Fishing Boo. Fishing Boos are called Supūku in Japanese and not Teresa. Honestly decent hypothesis you have. I think he probably can use it more often because he's in that state given blue flames seem to be an undead thing mostly. We also know there is some kind of supernatural force making Dry Bones still walk. I would guess he occasionally breathes blue flames because of some magic though is limited. While Bowser is a magic user he does appear to be limited. I think this is because his magic is the result of him wielding stolen Star/Wish Magic or in other words the Power of the Stars. Which also probably why he doesn't use his magic all the time. A resistance is weird , I don't think he developed a resistance given the whole SMB-SMB2 thing. Also, technically SM64 and SM64DS. As well as him taking on this form afterwards. The Dry Bowser form could be like his giant form. We know Bowser can enter said form normally though under high stress situations, but it's primarily triggered by Magic and Power Stars which I believe are connected. Dry Bowser could be a similar thing, certain conditions can cause it, like the whole Skeletone Formula:D incident. EDIT: Given Big Tail Goombas show in Bowser's Minions, this would place the events of Super Mario 3D Land before Superstar Saga and if I am correct before NSMBDS.

So your explication is just "DK Junior was retconned and doesn't exist anymore" ? That's boring. I have my own explaination that makes sense out of everything you couldn't explain. If the OG Donkey Kong is not the current Donkey Kong but his ancestor, what tells us that the OG Mario is the current Mario and not his ancestor ? What if "Jumpman" (I'll call him that to differenciate them) is Mario's father ? That would explain why he's a pretty evil guy unlike current Mario who would never do such a thing. They're not the same person. That would also make sense with Yoshi's Island DS. It's not Mario who is an adult in the original Donkey Kong, it's Jumpman. Meanwhile current Mario, his son, is still a child just like current DK is. That would also explain the difference in design of the cover art for the original Donkey Kong, where Mario looks nothing like the Mario we know now. It's Jumpman. With the Mario we know now being only playable starting with Mario Bros. And in Donkey Kong on Gameboy, it's also Jumpman. Yes they changed his design to look like current Mario in the Gameboy game since Nintendo never considered any of this, but their handling of the lore is bad. And since Donkey Kong on Gameboy takes place right after the events of OG Donkey Kong, it has to be Jumpman, not Mario. Technically that would be a retcon since Nintendo made it clear that the protagonist of both the original and Gameboy Donkey Kong games is the same Mario we have now, they're supposed to be one and the same. But it's a much more coherent retcon (it literally explains everything) than erasing DK Jr from existence entirely. And also Mario would have a canonical father now which is cool. And it would also explain Mario and DK's relationship in a pretty interesting way. It's Jumpman and Cranky who hate each other. At first, Mario and DK continued this cycle and were enemies just like Jumpman and Cranky, but eventually they managed to break free from it, started to hang out, and became more like friendly rivals instead.

_"If the OG Donkey Kong is not the current Donkey Kong but his ancestor, what tells us that the OG Mario is the current Mario and not his ancestor ?"_ Mario is the original Mario from Donkey Kong. The Encyclopedia tells us that before Mario Bros Mario was known as Jumpman and was in games like DK, DK Jr, and DK Hockey. Odyssey also has the references to the events of the Arcade game, and reference Mario being Jumpman. Miyamoto has claimed it's Mario. You have Mario's Classic Outifit being described as the original outfit he wore, and even to be disliked by the OG DK. The same outfit he uses in Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros btw. _"That would explain why he's a pretty evil guy unlike current Mario who would never do such a thing. "_ Mario and DK SNR were not enemies, which is why Mario never tries to kill him. It is stated Mario had to outwit DK SNR the prankster, after DK SNR thought it would be funny to kidnap Mario's girlfriend to get a rise out of him. All while through barrels at a construction site which is implied to have other people present. _"Yes they changed his design to look like current Mario in the Gameboy game since Nintendo never considered any of this, but their handling of the lore is bad."_ It's probably because DK 94 takes place later on, when Mario was switched to his modern outfit and DK SNR had begun wearing a tie. Compare it Lost Levels, BSSMUSA, and SM64DS being repeat events. The lore handing isn't bad and is actually pretty well thought out.

@@Eris1987 It still doesn't explain the timeline inconsistencies, like Mario and DK being babies at the same time. And also DK GBC takes place right after the events of the original. We know that since the original three levels are literally included at the very beginning of the game. So it could still be Jumpman. And your interpretation also doesn't explain Mario capturing DK in Donkey Kong Junior. Yes, Miyamoto confirmed Mario and Jumpman to be one and the same, but they're not afraid of making retcons, so why not retcon that ? @@Oceane1803 _"It still doesn't explain the timeline inconsistencies, like Mario and DK being babies at the same time."_ It's never explicitly stated which DK that is, all we know it's a DK. It could be any of the 3 or even an unmentioned one. There are several details like the modern outfit being present and other things that would have to place DK 94 later on. Yes the first 3 levels do appear, however this is more like an SM64DS situation. _"And your interpretation also doesn't explain Mario capturing DK in Donkey Kong Junior."_ I don't get why, after DK Snr kidnapped Pauline and put people in danger over a prank to get a rise out Mario, he was caged for his misdeeds. Implied to have taken place right after the first game. DK Jr his implied accomplice sets DK Snr free while Mario was trying to stop him. _"but they're not afraid of making retcons"_ True but those retcons fix inconsistencies and not create them, let alone one that would tear apart the Canon of Mario Tales. As for the Koopaling retcon if that's what you are referring to, that made sense because of the issues that arose from BJ. In addition it was only stated in manual and never in game. Unlike the Mario having been through the events of Donkey Kong which has been stated in manuals, the Encyclopedia, in games, etc. Also, there is debate if the Japanese even actually said they were his kids, or if it was misinterpretation with it saying they were the same species as Bowser. _"Make one that helps making sense out of everything instead of adding more inconsistencies for once ?"_ The Kong ages in not an inconsistency. Kongs in the Canon of Mario Tales just age rapidly, it's as simple as that. We see it happen with DK Snr, DK Jr, Tiny Kong, and implied for DK III. You see the problem is people are often trying to imposed real world logic onto a high fantasy world that doesn't abide by our rules. Just as gorillas age rapidly so too do plants talk, flowers and mushrooms have skeletons, hexapod dragons walk around, turtles wield magic, non avian dinosaurs still exist, and door talk back. This is just how the Mario world functions. Heck gorillas in the Mario world are sapient and have their own language. It doesn't make sense whatsoever to impose real world gorilla aging onto this high fantasy world.

Non avian dinosaurs aren't still walking around and can have a conversation with humans in the real world, to claim that wouldn't be logical. But in the Mario World it is possible and logic. Hexapod dragons simply cannot exist in our world and it's illogical to claim they could. But in the Mario World how their world's logic works. It isn't logical to claim there are gorillas that are sapient, have their own language akin to say English, and age rapidly on our world. But in the Mario World it does make sense. Again the logic is consistent in this high fantasy world, multiple Kongs have been shown to rapidly age over a short period of time as I showed. Keep in mind we are talking about a world where islands can be turned into storybooks, a plumber can escape a blackhole in a minigame, someone can be flattened by a stone ghost and be okay, and a plumber can change form into pixel or paper.

My headcanon is that the two-legged Koopa Troopas are not actually turtles, they are dinosaurs (note that the first time they appeared was in SMW, set in Dinosaur Land). They wear shell-like armor to honor Bowser and his clan, who is an entirely different species of demonic hell-turtle. The four-legged Koopa Troopas from SMB1 and SMB3 are regular (giant, aggressive, and possibly intelligent or at least trainable) turtles, and are not closely related to the two-legged ones.
@GlassesIncorp47
@GlassesIncorp47 2 месяца назад
I can agree to that, and it explains the four-legged koopas.
@Eris1987
@Eris1987 2 месяца назад
Interesting hypothesis but there is a problem with it. First off Koopa Troopas the 2 legged ones included have only ever been referred to as turtles in universe, in manuals, and descriptions. The same goes with all other species of Koopas such as the Lakitus, Spinys, Spikes, Buzzy Beetles, etc. Spikes and Lakitus are most notable because theses members of the Turtle Tribe are also bipedal. Unlike Yoshis, Koopas have never been called dinosaurs or referred to as prehistoric. The second problem is the Koopa Troopas from Mario Bros-Super Mario Bros 3 are the same ones seen in Super Mario World and beyond, and they are also bipedal. In Mario Bros when Koopa Troopa originally called a Shell Creeper is flipped upside down, they exit their shells standing on 2 legs and proceed to flip it over then reenter. In SuperStar Baseball we get this tidbit about Koopa Troopas, _"Long ago, he didn't even walk upright, but now he's even playing baseball!"_ Now I have my own hypothesis that could explain the bipedal and quadrupled conundrum. In PM64 we get this line of dialogue from a Koopa, _"thanks, Mario! This shell was made to order. That's why it fits me so well. I mean, how cool do I look?"_ In universe we know shells manufactured probably made by the parent company of Shell Strike Equipment. From Green Shells to Spiny shells and they probably even make Bowser's shells which he puts on loan for karting events. My hypothesis is that all Koopas are bipedal including the quadrupled ones, but are forced onto all fours because their shells are too heavy. We know in universe shells can be custom made as evident by the previous quote. But you also have shells Koopas can be kicked out of and ones they can't be kicked out of. Even some shells has special abilities or effects as seen in the Kamikaze Koopa, or in Bowser's equipable shells from Inside Story and SMRPG. Also, the ones from SMW can effects Yoshis in different ways serving as a Pseudo Power up. There is even Koopas of Bowser's army allowed to wear spiked shells, the Koopatrol. _"Only the toughest Koopas are selected to join the elite Koopatrol guard."_

In real life turtles, the shell is connected to the vertebrae and the ribs. That is why it is impossible to remove a turtle out of its shell. Turtles can even feel when someone touches their shell. It is part of their body. So Bowser has a more realistic depiction of turtles in this regard than koopa troopas.

The problem is in Inside Story and SMRPG Bowser can swap out his shell with a different shell. Shells are also manufactured in the Mario world probably by the parent company of Shell Strike Equipment. This is why characters like Yoshis, Goombas, Mario & Friends, and Konkadors can wear shells. A Koopa Troopa in Paper Mario 64 even acknowledges this fact, _ "thanks, Mario! This shell was made to order. That's why it fits me so well. I mean, how cool do I look?"_ Speaking of Shell Strike Equipment you have custom manufactured put on loan by Bowser for usage in karting events. _"This big ol' shell on loan from Bowser will crash any karts it hits and keep on going. It can only be thrown forward."_ _"An awe-inspiring giant shell! As it careens down the road, slamming and ramming into karts, it's the very image of Bowser himself."_ Also, other species of Koopas like Spinys can roll up into balls and roll around like Bowser does, and even use it as an attack. Or when they are the Spiny Egg hibernation mode, which is probably not an actually egg implied by some interesting details and the event lore established in YIDS. We also know their shells are removable and a manufactured due to the countless Red and Blue shells of varying models used in Karting, Sports, and Party events. There is also the fact that in Odyssey his Tuxedo clearly goes under his shell. In facts all the models for Bowser and Bowser Jr give them a back separate from their spiked shells. With the only deviation being from the Non Canon Smash bros. This also includes Odyssey the video "LEGIT Bowsers Back Hidden For At Least 17 Years - Boundary Break" has prime examples. I think a problem with the real world turtle thing is it is trying to impose real world logic to a high fantasy world were man eating flowers have skeletons and can talk, mushrooms have skeletons and don't duplicate via spores, babies are delivered from a magical place by storks, doors talk back, trees can talk, you can ride on clouds and rainbows, and hexapod dragons exist.

@@johannesschork8673 Bowser being able to swap shells in the rpgs is a gameplay mechanic. For example, in Super Mario RPG for snes, the gear had unique designs, but they do not affect the characters' appearance in the overworld or in battle. In Superstar Saga, Mario and Luigi's hammers get upgraded throughout the game to silver and gold, which is integral to the story. The design difference IS shown in both the overworld and battle. Gear in the RPGs, besides the weapons in SMRPG because they actually function differently, are simply stat boosts that you as the player don't have to us, as they're not story related. As for Mario Kart, you could just argue that it is just a more powerful version of the green shell designed to look like Bowser's given the way Double Dash's manual describes it. Also Petey and King Boo can use his shell as they can use any item.
