Thanks for this. 6:50 . I saw the paragraphs and they were so unhelpful to understand how to actually set this up. Most reviews online don't seem to touch on it either but I'm grateful you went into detail on it :-).
Full bandwith correction for Audyssey and Dirac is a sc@m! It isn't mathematically possible to correct above 500Hz with a unidirectional mic! Just get the Dirac basic + DLBC for best results!
Which do you prefer between the Yamaha A6A/A8A or the Denon X6800h? I picked up a A6A for 1530 brand new from Best Buy. But curious about the 6800h at 2400 on sale right now.

Judging Arcam off of their processer does the brand a bit of an injustice. Their amps, particularly the Class G 30/31 is where they really shine. Everyone focuses on the extra power, and efficiency of Class G, but that is burying the lead, Class G uses 2 rails, one a low power rail for low to medium listening and then a high power rail when more power is needed. The key here is that the lower power rail operstes in a Class A state up to around 20 watts (which is actually a lot of power if your speakers are even moderately efficient. So yes there is a bit more headroom on the 30/31 than the 20/21, but what makes the 30/31 truly special is actually the low to mid volume listening.
I run external amps for all of my 11 channels, so that makes the 70 less relevant for me at least. The price difference makes it an easy decision to go with the RZ50.
John great video! I went with Sony due to wireless rears and subs. STR az7000es that uses ra-rs5 battery powered wireless Dolby Atmos speakers. Sony with center lift on Bravia TVs show where Sony is innovating for the future.
I discovered your videos while looking at tables and quadrant comparisons of Pre/Pros and AVRs. The visual representation were incredibly helpful. This led me to view your first three videos on my Yamaha Aventage A8A. The are the best tutorials on the unit period. I've owned Yamaha AVRs for many years and found the manuals lacking. Thank you for your excellent work.
Im in a similar situation with my DefTech BP20. Ordered a replacement xover off ebay but thinking of dsoldering the speaker cables and soldering them back in.
Thank you for pointing out Pioneer had Dolby surround sound. I was lucky enough to have one with two twelve inch woofers. Hey it sounded pretty good paired with the new DVD 📀 format. 👍
This makes me doubt the quality and quality control of Marantz. It is very embarrassing for this company. Shouldn't happen with a product in this price range.
Super easy to overcome the independant subs situation with a Mini dsp or any dsp on the sub out and run a heap of subs individually I think 2 - 4 subs is all you'd never need independent
@Ripewave Audio How did you do the manual calibration for pattern 2 (7.1.4 with upper speakers)? I would like to build 7.1.4 setup but Yamaha supports 11.2, so I don't know how to achieve that.
Glad you're here to explain these things. Some might get too discouraged over these type issues and dismiss the problem. Send those units back and get one that works.
I had a ground loop problem with Denon receiver and cable box. I added a Ground Loop Isolator from the wall to the cable box on coaxial cable and hum was gone.
Hey john, really enjoy the channel. I watch the entire Sony 7000 series. I have a cinema 40. I’ve had it for about three months and it’s worked flawlessly. I did an update about a month ago and unfortunately I turned the receiver off during the process I didn’t unplug it it just power down. I quickly turned it back on, and it seemed that, it didn’t phase it at all when I checked it, it prompted me to download again so I did and had all sorts of problems not being able to access the set up menu, and after I was able to no sound from the center channel during the tone test, all other channels worked as they should. Call marantz walk me through deleting the firmware and reinstalling then everything worked except for the E arc which was working flawlessly before, so I am sending it in to be looked at as well. Hopefully they’re able to get everything working. We shall see. I will let you know what happens. Keep up the great work and will talk to you again john.
It would be interesting to try a cheap HDMI optical isolator on the Marantz HDMI problem. Granted, a bandaid fix, but a valid workaround while Marantz sorts out the issue. Yes, this type of video is intriguing.
The humming issue with cable Tv is a grounding issue I had the same problem and with the pre out problem ...did you try unplugging the unit and then plug it back in? The Tv cable issue was solved by putting a filter on the cable ...my Audio dealer put it on and I dont know where they got it ..but it worked They said my Arcam unit was so sensitive it picked up the hum through the cable. I have a ToneWinner amp and sometimes when there is a power surge.... one or more of the channels shuts down and I just unplug it then plug it back in and everything is fine. For some reason ToneWinner wants the unit to be directly plug into the wall socket and thats fine with me and not the surge protector. You might want to do a video on that ...because some companies say it better to plug the amps directly into the wall socket ..they claim better power supply.
Thank you very much sir, that's why I am a big fan of Yamaha since 1990 because I never have any issues. My RX-V1 still working properly even I just updated my system to the new one Rx-A8A. Thank you for your honesty.
Yes I agree yamaha 2080 for many years with no issues. Cant think of anything more frustrating than to have to tear down a receiver after a long setup.
Gday sir jon, im saving money for avr onkyo tx-rz70 or Yamaha a8a, how about the sound quality of 2 ch stereo music listening which should i pick up? Your opinion etc. is much appreciated.
I think one big selling point for Arcam is if you have limited rack space, and have difficult to drive speakers, then there are very few options. The AVR31 with its class G amplification can put out enough power to drive deep bass and dynamics from most speakers. It is unfortunate that software and quality issues mar the experience, as when it works, it is absolutely sublime.
