This whole dahlia farm thing just kind of happened… In 2010, I bought a few tubers because I thought dahlias were absolutely stunning. In all honesty, my first year of growing dahlias wasn’t very successful: I got a few blooms, and killed more than a few plants. The next year, I did better. Fast forward through ten+ years of experimental trial and error, and now the dahlia patch has grown so large that I sell the extra tubers to keep up the passion!

On this channel, my mission is to help you grow dahlias without having to go through the same "trial and error."

Thanks for the great video Should I pull the clusters every year from the ground or just leave them alone for next year??? How long they have to take be chilled at what temperature to be ready for growing??? And how to keep them, not to go completely dry and dead, keep in dark place??? Thanks

Glad to hear how you store your dahlias because I stored mine in an open box in my garage 2023-2024 and they all survived! In the past I have tried storing the tubers wrapped in newspaper and placed in a closed container and not many survived. I live on the coast of MA. Maybe we just had a mild winter. But I'll store them like you again. I tuned in to learn how to divide dahlia tubers and got a great education! Thank you

Help - Complete novice with Dahlias. Thank you for your videos. Can i rescue an enormous root of Crazy Love that has already starting shooting but has been munched my slugs before I noticed. At first I had no idea what was growing in the pot. I couldn't recognise the leaves as they had been eaten down. I removed the whole thing from the pot and hosed it down to clean it. Am I too late to rescue it? Add to this the fact that after looking back on my blog I see that I had put two varieties in the same pot the other being ponpom Snowflake. Maybe the Crazy Love overpowered the smaller one. I remember that this Crazy Love did throw up a massive flower last year after nothing the previous year.

One of the best videos for this. Lesson learned even though I washed them off in the fall, wash them off much more cause its spring and the stem bases have nice hard pkugs of earth yay.

Can you do anything with the tubers with a neck, but NO part of the crown/collar and therefore no eyes? Like they won’t “grow” a crown, correct? Is only option to compost/throw away? GREAT video. So helpful for someone taking on Dahlia’s for the first time!!!

THANK YOU. I bought a mixed bag with 2 dahlia tubers in it. I didn't even know you couldn't leave them in the ground all winter. I have a lot to learn.

Thank you! I am planning to grow my dahlias in containers. I thought that adding biochar would be good to improve water (and nutrient) holding capacity of the soil. Have you ever tried that? Greetings from Finland!

I wish I would have found this video a few days ago. This was incredibly helpful. I am in an area in California where dahlias overwinter just fine in the ground. I dug up my two seasons old Dancing Queen dahlia to divide and immediately replant, my first dahlia dividing experience ever. The clump was enormous, a little larger than the Black Swan you demonstrated. All the other videos I watched made it look so easy, but thosr were all reasonable sized clumps, not tubers all intertwined and underneath one another. I spent 3 hours doing my best to divide it. It was a mess by the time I was done. Hopefully I got some viable tubers out of the deal. Most of the ones that looked like they might have a neck and eyes got planted in nursery pots so I can tell if they will grow, 18 pots worth plus several tubers that went back in the ground. Waiting in great anticipation to see what happens. Thanks again.

I live in Penna. and have clay soil. I learned from my aunt, who learned from her mother to dig up the dahlias leaving them in the clump of dirt. When i tried storing them with the dirt cleaned off (that was what the "experts" said to do), i lost many more than i saved. I do not do any dividing or cleanup of them till spring when the new growth is obvious. So your "lazy" method works best for me at least!

Hello Evelyn from Yorkshire in the UK: I am an old guy but a newish gardener, dahlias are one of my favourite plants. I learned so much from this video, thank you very much. One thing I wasn't sure of is whether splitting should be done before winter storage or in the spring? Given that you cleaned a couple of the tubers I suspect this was done before?? George

I looked up putting cardboard in the garden and your video came up. Loved the way you say “not an expert” but what works for you. Then I have 1 dahlia bulb that I’ve had for several years planted in the ground but this spring I dug it up and grew it in a pot. Looked up how to over winter it and again your video came up. I’m going to store in paper bag with some white shavings that I use in my chicken coop and see what happens. Also a PNB Wa resident. Thank for your straight forward approach.
