In the last video, we learned how to divide big dahlia tubers and the basics of dividing dahlias. Since publishing that video, I had a few people request I provide more examples that were a bit slower and could be followed more closely. That's what this video part 2 video is all about!
Be sure to watch part one first and come back here if you want more examples!

I just tackled a few monster tubers. It' my fist year and I watched this after i did the big divide. Wish I had watched it first, but I left my tubers clusters on the large side instead of sacrificing anything. Next year I'll be more confident, once I see how the divisions grow. I too had little earth worm nests.

I wish I would have found this video a few days ago. This was incredibly helpful. I am in an area in California where dahlias overwinter just fine in the ground. I dug up my two seasons old Dancing Queen dahlia to divide and immediately replant, my first dahlia dividing experience ever. The clump was enormous, a little larger than the Black Swan you demonstrated. All the other videos I watched made it look so easy, but thosr were all reasonable sized clumps, not tubers all intertwined and underneath one another. I spent 3 hours doing my best to divide it. It was a mess by the time I was done. Hopefully I got some viable tubers out of the deal. Most of the ones that looked like they might have a neck and eyes got planted in nursery pots so I can tell if they will grow, 18 pots worth plus several tubers that went back in the ground. Waiting in great anticipation to see what happens. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for showing this! I was just able to confidently seperate my 4 cafe au lait dahlia bulbs into 6 dahlia plants and hoping they all work out. I could have seperated them into 8 total but sadly I bought them commercially and they were a lot of rotting broken necks and small tubes so I didn't want to take any chances. I presoaked them which really worked a ton they grew new roots quite quickly and even some new buds! I have a Karma Choc that I might unearth to see if it is feasible to divide it because WHEW that thing was expensive and I'd love to have more. Thanks again for going over this very thoroughly.

Great job! Great video! I didn’t realize that watching dahlias being divided was such an enjoyable watch, like a movie filled with danger (“Monster dahlias!!!”), tragedy (“Always sad for me to lose pieces...”), and happy endings (“This will make someone happy.”). That black satin clump was indeed monstrous. How many years did it take to grow to that size? What would happen if you were to allow it to continue to grow?
@evelynsgardenandnursery
@evelynsgardenandnursery 2 года назад
😂😂😂 Hahaha, you're right! It does seem to have a lot of drama for such a repetitive task 😂. That was a two year old Black Satin plant (left in the ground for one winter, dug up the next fall), actually from my friend's yard. Tuber clumps do get bigger! I've also found that they grow a bit closer to the soil surface over time (which actually makes them more susceptible to freezing over the winter). They also get slightly harder to divide, as everything seems to start growing together (or just gets harder to separate without damaging them). For this reason, I recommend digging and dividing at least every third year, if possible. I don't feel that the plants get much bigger, though, over time. They don't get taller year after year, they do get more stems... but you can get essentially the same effect by pruning any dahlia early in the season and causing to branch more from the bottom (called "topping"). Overall dahlias do seem to max out/crowd themselves out/plateau in growth after a certain point. Thanks for your comment, made my day 😂.

What is your secret for growing such large and amazing dahlia clumps 😃? I have never seen such a thing of beauty 😍. Thanks for this second video on dividing tubers.
@Gary-Seven-and-Isis-in-1968
Having just bought a random Dahlia mixed bag from my local Lidl, I wanted to see if I could make more from what the bag contained. (BTW I'm a novice Gardener from the UK) What you showed me was pretty well eye opening, now having been on the receiving end of your wisdom. The bag contained lots of waste that I didn't know about. (Loose Dahlia Tubers with no eyes.) Plus, the Clusters that are complete, have no way of being further sub divided, which for a cheap product it is surprising that they've taken the extra time and effort to make sure the buyer doesn't get any freebies. I'll know better next time. Thanks to your informative video.

Hi! Tho is my fist time experimenting with dahlia tubers, I knew absolutely nothing when I potted up the two I got at Aldi 😬. I seem to have way underestimated the pot size. It’s been growing for about 3 weeks, and it definitely needs more light. Can I transplant it to a larger pot and put outdoors? I’m in Brooklyn, and I’ll be putting it where it will get some morning sun, and bright light the rest of the day.

Help - Complete novice with Dahlias. Thank you for your videos. Can i rescue an enormous root of Crazy Love that has already starting shooting but has been munched my slugs before I noticed. At first I had no idea what was growing in the pot. I couldn't recognise the leaves as they had been eaten down. I removed the whole thing from the pot and hosed it down to clean it. Am I too late to rescue it? Add to this the fact that after looking back on my blog I see that I had put two varieties in the same pot the other being ponpom Snowflake. Maybe the Crazy Love overpowered the smaller one. I remember that this Crazy Love did throw up a massive flower last year after nothing the previous year.

If the tuber comes dry and wrinkled, will it still moisten up and grow? I can't see eyes, see a few collars, but none look as yours do.

Divide at your own risk! Hahahaha great video. That black satin was a beast a big squatty beast. Thanks for tackling the tubers. Hi from Utah! Keep the videos coming. Love learning. I have a question? I'm learning to take cuttings. If you take a cutting with a little bit of tuber attached will that eye grow another sprout? Thanks
@evelynsgardenandnursery
@evelynsgardenandnursery 2 года назад
Hi!! So glad you liked this video 😂! I am taking cuttings for the first time this year... I've been growing dahlias for like 10 years and I've just never tried it, which is kind of ridiculous honestly because it is supposedly such a great way to make more dahlias! I just started activating a few tubers yesterday and am recording the process. It'll become a video eventually, even if I fail and they die or something 😂. I'll tell the story. I have been doing some research and my understanding is that if you cut off a bit of tuber with the sprout, you have removed that eye essentially. Other eyes can sprout from the tuber in different spots, of course... I know some eyes can kind of re-sprout if partially broken off, but I think if it's cut off with a bit of tuber, it's done. But the trade off is supposedly they root easier if you have that bit of tuber... I've also learned from the amazing Kristine Albrecht @SantaCruzDahlias on Instagram! She has a couple of videos in her feed with her cutting method. She "pulls" the sprouts off of the tubers, and she says you'll get more sprouts around each "pull." Here's the link to that: instagram.com/tv/CZVcsaVKeBR/? I can do an experiment, too! Slice vs cut vs pull cuttings and see what happens. I planted a few extra tubers to experiment with for the video. ☺🌱
