I have a stainless Dovo razor, and I have no problems shaving with it. Have you ever tryed a stropping padle and some compound ? That’s the way I do it.
Great Video Martin. Good to see you expanding your talents as you suss out stainless and move from synthetic stones to coticules. BTW - mid 40s C is around 110 - 115 F.
Once I get a nice big coticule like yours I will stop playing around with the Arkansas stone with coti slurry but they can be so darn expensive hehe great shave Martin it seems like you cracked the code with the stainless steels using coticules! Cheers my friend!
I have a friodur & had a similar problem. I sharpened it progressively up to 12k on shapton stones, then on balsa wood with diamond emulsions down to 0.25 micron then stropped on leather. It was Scary sharp, but I still did not like shaving with Satan steel. I just stick to carbon steel blades now.
Sometimes the Brits can be very poor influences on the rebellious colonial offspring. Next thing you know, one of us Rednecks will have a wife who without good reason is very upset with the man of the house for sharpening his razors on the kitchen counters. 😂 ….then some knot head will be coming along to convex the same. 😎
That’s something i have never seen before. I love it when you think out of the box. Mostly because it irritates the honing police, and rule makers! Can’t wait to see the shave. Success or fail, you didn’t hurt anyone, and you have a little fun on a Sunday. Enjoy your skate and your day! You should really consider a shave on wheels. I may purchase a PPV for that 😂.
Glad to see you tried it out haha I didn't think you would do it so quickly haha! I do it in the black ark because I know for sure that the black ark won't hurt the edge, I hope the same applies to the marble here Marti but I wouldn't know. When it comes to the contamination of the black ark I always use it in one side of the stone and keep the other side clean, however I think when contamination eventually does happen i'll be long dead hehe those stones are 2 hard! I'll be waiting for the shave video my friend!
I have not been able to get a stainless steel razor yet, but I have a silver steel razor that I have been trying to get right. So I understand how it feels like you are getting no where with the razors edge. Thanks for sharing.
Great shave and beautiful sharp razor. And such an injury is not an injury. I also often use alum, it is also useful to prevent my fingers from being slippery when holding the razor. Pozdrawiam .
There's tremendous warmth, kindness and brotherhood when men help each other in life, and teach each other skills Andrey seems like a sweet lad - perhaps not completely convinced about your wisdom just yet!
I wouldn't even consider that a cut my friend, that's a little love touch from the razor to you for honing it so well, it's just saying, "Thank you" I must say every time I see the SK Colling razor it makes me want to get mine quicker hehe
Thanks for the kind words on my soap, I am glad it’s working out. Here is a tip for keeping fingers dry. I have recently been experimenting with one of those cooling towels. The type you would use to soak up cool water to refresh you on a hot day. If find they soak up water fast; they immediately dry the fingers and actually leave the fingers a little tacky. These towels have found their way into my process permanently. There are a number of these type towels on Amazon and they are very affordable.
In the USSR there were no “special razors” intended only for party members or anything like that. Absolutely all razor models were sold in retail and were available to absolutely everyone. With an average salary of 150 rubles, these razors cost 2-3 rubles. There were simply premium models that were produced in smaller quantities, and there were models that were simply produced for a short period. The razor with the smile is called "Yacht" (Яхта) and the second razor is called "Engraving" (Гравюра). All razors had satin applied at the factory. If there is no satin, then the razor has been at least polished. These razors belong to the same factory and the same time period, and therefore the steel in them is the same H-05 (Х-05 rus) or H9 (Х-9 rus). Their differences are in geometry. The razors were sharpened at the factory, and they were delivered to the consumer ready for shaving. These razors were supposed to be maintained using a strop with paste, as well as natural Russian slate “Atlyanskiy slate” (Атлянский сланец). It was mined in the Urals specifically for straightening straight razors.
Hey from Russia. This razor model did not have artistic etching. On some models, artistic etching was done using the electrolytic method. It is quite deep and simply sanding will not remove it. Engravings were never applied to Russian razors. Your razor is called "Yacht". Not a bad razor. But this model was never artistically etched. "Yacht" was produced from 1954 to 1968. From 1954 to 1957 the razor had a different geometry. In 1958 it was updated, and until 1968 it was produced in the form in which you have it. The shaving brush you have was not sold at retail and was manufactured for the military. That's why it's so simple and utilitarian. In retail, the Soviet market for razor brushes was represented mainly by products produced in East Germany (GDR) and Czechoslovakia. There were some of our own, of course, but people preferred imports, especially from the GDR. You can find photos of them on the Internet by searching for "Hirschpinsel".
I feel the same way about the edge off my Moughton, very Coti’ish as for comfort, keenness and how smooth it is. I imagine you could come off of 3k but it would take an eternity. I have used mine off of a Coti, 8k, 10k and 12k. They all about the same. The higher you go may speed up the time on the Mouton. My preferred method is following a Coti or 10k.
@mathewfromthemountains7157 loom strops are very easy to use , but best for light touch ups and travelling. Just untighten the tension when in storage , I prefer a long hanging strop in my bathroom. Good luck 👍
@mathewfromthemountains7157 I will look that one up ? Unusual to not have a linen/ canvas side ? But the buff leather can be used instead of canvas/linen . I'll look into it .
@mathewfromthemountains7157 I looked it up , nice but ideally you need a canvas or linen strop for after honing or basically to straighten out the edges little micro teeth and the leather to burnish afterwards. As an example I tried to hanging hair test after this mornings shave with no luck 🙃 as the edge was damaged by multi pass shaving. Then I stropped on canvas then leather. Immediately perfect HHT again 👌.
I wonder if that stone is related to Jasper or not? 🤔 Making grit jumps like that is usually a good way to see if the finer stone is actively abrasive or not and if it’s fast/slow. Intriguing stone!
I have a Moughton, not an aggressive stone but produces a good edge. I usually go to 8k then move over, but 5k will work as well. Good luck with it, I enjoy mine.
