I have a box turtle named Dixie. We found her in the road and rescued her. But I'm wondering if anyone has advice on box turtles, like their diet and if I can buy them food at the pet store or not and what kind of environment they enjoy as well as any other tips. Thanks!!
Release it back where it came from. All species of Terrapenne are protected, so you’re breaking the law. Rescued would be moving it off the road. What you did was poach it from the wild, which impacts the wild population much more than you could possibly imagine.
@GiveWarAChance375 we actually own 40 acres of land and live right up against the state highway. She was in the middle of the highway where our land was so we did put her back on the land she came from. We just moved her further from the road so she wouldn't attempt to cross it again. However, we see her often anf she tends to stick around my rabbits play pen outside, so I'm wondering what kinds of foods and stuff we can offer as treats as well as fun and safe environments we can make for her around the area to encourage her to stick around and keep her safe:)
That is not how it works they have to dig down and up alone. This harm them pls let them do their own things. If u are worried about them being to lazy just move the earth a little bit adding straw and dry leaves. to make the ground softer
During brumation their respiration and heart rate drops drastically and their oxygen needs are so minimal they can get what they need from the loose soil around them
Box turtles are actually classified as turtles! They’re semi-aquatic and part of the pond turtle (Emydidae) family, not the tortoise (Testudinidae) family
