The Mountain Lion Foundation is a national nonprofit dedicated to protecting mountain lions and their habitat. Learn more about the species, known by more names than any other animal in world (cougar, puma, panther, catamount...) and our efforts to Save America's Lion by visiting www.MountainLion.org.
jrviade85, Lack of food. When the food source (deer, elk , wolves, coyote, etc.) dwindles, the cougar population will soon follow. And when the cougar population dwindles, the deer, et al. will thrive. When more food animals thrive, the cougar population will follow. It is a time honored cycle that has worked almost perfectly for thousands and thousands of years. And if mankind could leave it alone (or at least minimize the interference), it will continue to work in the future.
I know laws vary from state to state, But in California it is illegal to harm a mountain lion if it attacks or kills your pet. I don't have children so my pets are my Children. I have a responsibility to keep them safe and it's horrifying that I can't exercise that right to protect them. Other than I only let them out a few hours a day. From noon till 3 in the afternoon Supervised.. And then they're indoors from that point on, but still If a mountain lion jumps my fence in the afternoon I will have to watch it eat my pets alive. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way. And i'm also sure this comment of mine will get all kinds of hate from mountain lion sympathizers that believe mountain lions shold be aloud to eat our pets.I just happen to love all animals ,pets and wild ones.
Government needs to do more to protect ALL these beautiful amazing Puma 's . Humans need to stop encroaching upon their habitats and sport hunting should be banned and be made punishable by law.
These creatures are utterly magnificent; alas, we don’t have them in New Zealand. I’d love to see one in the wild, but I’d probably wind up as lunch after trying to pet one. 😏
Wow great story, your perseverance and struggles, I’m so happy for you that you made it through so many obstacles. Congrats on 5 year sober ❤. Your photography is amazing , it’s not just getting out of a vehicle and getting a few shots. You’re getting out to a blind in the cold, researching these beautiful animals. Great story Savannah , now I have more reason to follow along.
I admire your strength and perseverance through everything and your pictures are nothing less than amazing...thank you for sharing your story...respect...
I don't know. I'm in NE Metro-Atlanta, and have one-half acre that is not landscaped. I've heard things at night. Maybe a small breeding population has survived.
Thank you for the kind words on P22, he will never be forgotten, let's hope he didn't die in vain and that soon that animal crossing will be saving more lions and other animals from P22's fate.
I find the loss of P-22 very, very sad. I have been a member of the Mountain Lion Foundation for at least 15 yrs. I grew up in Hidden Valley CA and saw bobcats and the very rare mountain lion during the 50+ yrs., I lived there. Few people appreciate the wildlife that used to be even more abundant in the Conejo Valley than it is now. He was an educational ambassador for his kind and was so at his own risk! That risk finally did him in!
I started my day with the announcement on my local news channel that P-22 had been sent on his way to the Rainbow Bridge, and I sat down and cried. He was an amazing ambassador representing all mountain lions and how they could live peacefully among us. Run free, beautiful boy. 💖💖💖
Thank you. I could see your pain and I appreciate you pushing through. I have all the confidence in the world with the famous San Diego Zoo and their expertise, and I'm glad they were a part of the decision. Rest in Power our King P-22!
As a long-time member of this wonderful organization, I'm really proud of the work they do. Mountain lions are one of our national treasures, and I hope they continue to flourish. If any of you out there are looking for a place to drop some donations, I highly recommend the Mt. Lion Foundation.
