We had a real problem too in Ireland with too many fire engines and too many fire fighting personnel arriving at accidents and then staying too long sweeping the roads etc. A lot of the firefighters were part time so were dependent on call out income so that was the reason. One of the guys (garda) I once worked with and a firefighter were killed when a speeding car ploughed into them while they were dealing with an accident one night.
Had to be staged because the legal logistics and permissions needed to broadcast real accidents would just be unworkable even by the standards applied back then.
Drove the motorway today and was startled by the number of motorists that seemed clueless about motorway driving. I had to reduce speed several times - it's better to be safe than dead right. This film is sobering, even in 2024 - 49 years later!
I passed my test when I was in the Army, church crookham I got in a land rover, the instructor got out and said, 'drive round the track twice' Off I went, wheelies, stalling, skidding on bends, I thought I was the dogs nuts Got back to the instructor, he said 'Now I'll teach you how to drive properly Every time I crossed my hands, he gave me a whack, any mistakes, it was another crack with his stick I had to do a hill start, he took my cigarettes and put them under the back wheel, He said 'they are your fags, roll back and you will be buying a new packet' t was a hard lesson learning to drive, buI still remember it, but this was back in 67 I went on to drive 3 ton trucks, APC's then a lesson in tank driving with instructions from the commander, that was 'interesting' to say the least Picked up a lot of bad habits since then

In my opinion, if john gibson had, have been listening to some heavy metal instead of that rubbish music, he wouldn't have fallen asleep. Tony Wilton should have brought a car with more than 80bhp he could have stuffed the mk 3, If Mary Stafford had brought a car with a circular steering wheel instead of a square one she would have been able to make the manoeuvre no problem. If Captain Preston had been on his phone and not smoking a cigar things would have been Diffrent. And finally, if all four of the plebs had been using meters instead of feet and inches none of this would have happened.
I still have my classic 1972 Rover P6 3500 V8 manual with all the extras ET headrests front and back and that lush deep pleated cream leather just wonderful. So I was enjoying all the P6's in this video and the other police cars. I was a cop (Garda) in Ireland for 31 years - started in 1983 - a lot of it on the Garda motorbikes. Retired as a sergeant 10 years ago. We never had nice police cars - cortina Mk 4's, Sierra's, a few Montegos, Ford Mondeo's and Focuses. Now they use mainly Hyundai's - thank god I was gone when they came in. The traffic corps had Vauxhall Victors in the 70's and 2.0GL cortina's in the early 80's. The crime task force had 2.8 Mk II Granada's in the 80's - it was downhill all the way after that.
