I'd recommend looking at Terrain Tamers Parabolic GVM upgrade kits. You'll get a great ride out of that set up. Not sure exactly what it costs but you'll need to invest a few grand at least for a decent set up, probably more if you want the GVM upgrade engineers mod plate.
Gday mate. Really appreciate the vid and the education you’re giving. Is the Koni shock / terrain tamer parabolic combo still in your opinion the way to go? My constant load in the rear will be 500 kgs but prob 800 kgs when I’m loaded up for a trip with boat on canopy , trailer etc so I’m thinking the 700 kg parabolic? What model Koni shock ya reckon? Cheers mate and well done
Not sure exactly but substantially more than the 4 leaf. With your weight I’d personally go the 5 leaf. In the long term and when fully loaded it’ll be the way to go. Ride is still good with 500kg on.
I get you cleared the code to take it out of limp mode but what was the underlying issue causing it and don't you risk damage by just clearing codes and powering on or does it depend on the issue? Also how does it compare with the Scanguage 3? Cheers
In this case it is being caused by the tune after turning the EGR valve off. A glitch in the matrix on this one and no further damage resulting from turning it off.
@@moontours9071 I'm getting told by some suspension mobs that parabolics aren't suited for heavy constant weight and will sag, even Dobinsons who do parabolics advise against it unless the 79 only has a tray and you just want the better ride. I'd prefer to avoid the heavy constant load leaf packs. I thought you'd be the best person to ask having actual experience with parabolics in the field. My 2023 79 single cab V8 with 1800 canopy sits at 2.9T empty & 3.45T fully loaded with our 2T van hitched, 220 ball weight, oem gvm at 3510kgs.
@@markh6676 absolutely not the case with Terrain Tamers 5 leaf parabolic. I’m close to 4T loaded and towing a trailer. Have done more hard loaded miles on those springs in the last three years than most would do in a lifetime. We’re putting a set on Ron’s brand new troopy and a mates single cab. Awesome springs mate.
CATCH CANS WAKE UP! They do work well if you use the correct type & size. NO you don't want that oil filling your intercooler or oily soot gunk clogging your inlet !!! Even the cheap knock off $35 Provent 200 from e bay works well. You can add some stainless pot scourers to filter more or retro fit a PV 200 paper filter, but it's not worth the money for paper filters. Also use a heavier / thicker oil to reduce blowby. Manufacturers thin oil recommendations are total BS that destroys engines !!! And because Aussie fuel is junk & now basically ultra low sulphur you ALWAYS need a good fuel lubricant !!! Then you'll have no excessive ring, valve or injector wear !!! Injectors should never be worn out or a problem at 200,000 kl if you use a decent lubricant, or unless a mechanical fault or badly made injector or faulty injector to start with. And never use cheap oils like Valveoburn or Castocastrate.
I'm in the process of researching/considering the Sierra ZR. Just wondering what brand/model gas stove you are using as i can't see anything similar from the usual culprits. Thanks for sharing video, it has gone a long way towards placing the ZR on my short list.
We fitted a Thetford two burner with a grill which fits nicely on the Sierra. Nothing is perfect but if you want a seriously tough and capable camper with loads of storage you can’t go wrong. I still have that same one and it has done a whole lot more since then. I really like the roof storage under the rack, you’ll be surprised how much you use it. No other camper has anything like that.
Ah yeah it can make it harder. Best go from Mount Dare to Birdsville, shed as much weight as possible, have a really good set up, good quality gear and start tyre pressures all round at 18psi, go lower if need be.
Yes you do need the bigger can for the V8's, 3 litre & 2 litre engines. Even on smaller engines the big one's are fine. Can never have a can too big. You must use thicker oils like 20W-50 or 20W-60. Your engine has lots of blowby & wear because of people etc using those stupidly thin oil recommendations they have now. The thin oils are total bs & are destructive to your engine in hot Oz climates. I've seen that many engines prematurely worn & or damaged from thin oils it's not funny. Ticking lifters, heaps of blowby, blowing smoke, burning oil, lower compression & as you say, worn rings, valve guides & seals etc. If you're driving in -20 C thin oils are ok, but never for Australian or other hot country conditions. Any honest oil engineers & honest mechanics will tell you the same. It also says that in the oil specification books.
The 20W is too heavy for this Engine. It's not a 1HZ mate. Yes the 5W30 is too light at temp. The best overall for this Engine is 5W40 high Zinc. Considering its a Quad Cam Roller Rocker lash adjusted drive Train & Turbo Charged, telling punters to drastically change the Viscosity is just bad advise. The Engine has an Oil Cooler so you need to push this V8 very hard to get the Oil temp over 95. You don't seem to understand how this Engine is built and operated
@@pauljbusby Can you tell me please what vehicle & engine model & series are you talking about. Please supply a link to it & also a link to specs please.
@@pauljbusby Nowhere in Australia do you need a 5W anything oil, & especially not in Cape York. Thin oils are a scam and fools fall for it. And as I said, all the honest oil engineers I've spoken to all say the same thin, these ultra thin oils are wearing engines out much faster. Btw I don't know of any standard Toyota engine that has roller rockers.
@@pauljbusby Thin oil v thick oil review / case study. Supercheap website. Homer Melbourne Australia Review 1 Votes 25 Team Review? No 5 out of 5 stars. Long Engine Life 2 years ago I have used 20/60 Penrite oil in my 2000 WF Ford Festiva since new. The dealer upon its first service replaced the factory supplied oil with Castrol 10/40. I noticed the oil presser light would stay on for nearly three seconds combined with slight overhead rattle. Dealer said, not really a problem. I took the car home ,drained the oil and replaced it with Penrite 20/60. Problem solved, oil pressure light is extinguished immediately and absence of engine noise. Dealer said that I would have problems because of the thickness. "WELL 20Yrs later and still the original engine has travelled 461,000 KM. oil consumption is about 0.5 Lt per 10,000 KM. Still goes hard. Yes,I recommend this product.
@@pauljbusby I had a 99 Hiace SBV van & was using 20W-50. The oil spec website said I could use oil as thin 10W-30. I decided to go midway & used 15W-40. Van engine rattled it's head off. After a couple of weeks I changed back to a heavier oil, but the damage was done & had a bad rattling lifter ever since. "The Engine has an Oil Cooler so you need to push this V8 very hard to get the Oil temp over 95. You don't seem to understand how this Engine is built and operated" I guess 4x4 driving at Cape York is not pushing the engine hard ?
Great review, you tested the shit out of it.. but for the price and boasting 20 yrs of off road camper building, the only cons should be little personal picky things that other would roll their eyes at, but the cons you mentioned are major and reasonable, the practicality doesn’t match the toughness, they’ve built a camper to what you’ve done with it and to last. Like you mentioned though most campers will barely see a rough dirt road and couple trips a year and won’t get the intensity of use you’ve given it. You’d expect that ball weight on a big arse caravan not a camper, wtf. Hopefully a longer drawbar will cut the weight down and AOR work with you on your concerns. Top videos, doing one of tours would be very awesome…
I have the same shape hilux that I’m setting up with a trailer to do a long slow explorative working holiday around Oz. It was a tough test, so the hilux did good. Hope you put the next trip on the Tube. What size tyres did you run? Good to see the girls on these tours giving driving a crack.
Do they call you "Mr Arizona"? You stripped bolts... That's a sure sign not to listen to a word he says.... Opening the oil filter cap and it going out there and not via the crank case is called science.... air follow path of lest resistance.... He had issues due to improper catch can size and not maintaining it....
Is the PDR "technically doable" with a regular car, or genuinely quite straightforward? We'd like to do the cape to the tip as a bucket list with our Cub camper-trailer (<1000kg) and our Suzuki SX4 (4wd version, 1st gen, auto box) from Cairns as a touring holiday rather than an off-road expedition. We'd like to travel via the bloomfield track if feasible, and have heard it is "doable" with a "softroader", but happy to cut that out if it's beyond something like the SX4.
The PDR is just a normal road, a few hundred km of dirt with corrugations but with lots of new bitumen. Easy IF you let your tyres down to 25 psi for the corrugated bits and SLOW DOWN. Take an expensive compressor, 10m of pressure hose and nitto fittings including the pressure gun. Deflate all tyres, inflate for bitumen (longer than a few km).
Just crossed Simpson with patrol and off road camper trailer. Drop pressure to 14 on all 6, follow rig road west to east than k1 line to qaa, you see more stuff and experience true isolation/Simpson spirit. Must admit there were a few high dunes in qaa line but never got bogged, just cruised to the top and had to slow right down to descend on the east side of the dune which was chopped up pretty badly. I wouldn't recommend camper trailers, purely that if you break down would be more hassle and you have to be pretty experienced in off roading and sand driving to tow it up. However if you are going to, just follow rig road and k1, do it west to east. You would be mad to go east to west with camper trailer and guarantee you won't get very far, getting bogged on pretty badly chopped up east side of dunes. Now i did not see any camper trailers going east to west but did come across guided tours of 11 cars in convoy or motorcycles. Not sure who caused more damage to the track, my camper trailer or unexperienced convoys bashing east to west.
