Tatemae is the means by which people give themselves unrepentant license to lie in someone else's face, then to actually feel good about themselves after the fact. It rarely has anything to do with sparing the other person's feelings. It's more about not creating their own personal discomfort. In that regard, 建前 (tatemae) is simply an excuse to get around admitting to being an 嘘つき (usotsuki/liar). It's difficult in this country to not get jaded to the point of thinking, "If their lips are moving, they are lying."
c'mon cut the BS , we all know gaikokujin = White Westerner or Korean K-drama star. Gaikokujin does not mean the Vietnamese guy woking at konbini, the Kurdish guy working construction, the Nigerian tout, the SriLankan working in the kitchen....
I was so confused like I was so sure 牛 is niu and 我想回家 is wo xiang hui jia. I thought I had forgotten what I learned. Turns out she reads in cantonese 😂
Busuu isnt all bad. While i understand some stuff is surface level and maybe too robotic for casual conversation, i still used it to learn hiragana and katakana and as a free service it was great for that.
Very insightful! It's really interesting that men in sexual services are referred to as 'therapists' but the women in the industry are not...the double standard is real-women are shamed for this line of work while men seem to be praised for it
Funny stuff ! Japanese are so polite they are trying to be kind. Love it ! Good work from Australia. Say "AOOOH STRRRRRR AAAAAAAAA YAAA " and you will get close.
I think the people being interviewed are more correct about the meaning than they are getting credit for in some cases. I am also a Chinese language student, so I might be wrong about this, but the second expression "今天学校放假" looks more like "today school is on break / on holiday", which is more in line with what the people were guessing, rather than what the interview translates it as "there is no school today" (or in more natural English, "there are no classes today"). I'd translate that expression as "今天没有课". Of course I don't understand Japanese at all so my knowledge of what the people in this video are saying comes from the English subtitles which is probably losing something in translation.
Root Beer is best when you are in the American West, driving down a lone stretch of highway with dust in your hair sun tinging your skin and you come across a small town after 50 mi without one. You stop at a sonic or if lucky a local restaurant and have a burger or chili dog with a nice refreshing root beer.
It’s fun how people view other people. I will never forget when my student opened his eyes with his finger to imitate me. I returned fire the only way I could by pulling my eyes closed and throwing up peace 😅
