Join me as we make terrain and paint and battle Lord of the Rings miniatures
Together we will be following along with the 91 fortnightly magazine released by Games Workshop to coincide with the release of each movie.
Join me as we go through each magazine .
We learn how to paint the provided miniature in the Painting Workshop We create scenery in modelling workshop We play out each scenario from the magazines in Battle Games And we take a look at the whole magazine in the 90 Second Flip
I know these games were just introductory in nature, but they were brilliant little mini games you could get through in about 5-10 minutes. When you have 50 models on each side, the move phase was a nightmare.
A rely great short tutorial, excellent! You can use texture paste or modelling paste to coat your mdf models to give it more texture and thickness. Put in on a milimeter or two thick, uneven to leave surface irregularities, then let it set up partially. Once it has you can use a blunt pencil, small nail or anything convenient with a slightly blunt point to create a 3d brick or stone pattern. This will give the mdf a surface texture that takes painting and dry brushing well and gives a 3d surface as good as you get with the foam version.
I have this mini ,also Lurtz is my cuzzy as in Lawrence Makoare and quite a few of the stuntmen/ orcs too .Filming helms deep the 350 orc /Maori getting a wee bit chilly standing in the rain began an impromptu Haka .The weight and power of hundreds of "orcs" caused the ground to tremble and shake along with the tall ,thin mostly students hired on to portray the Elves ! Sadly it was all over before anyone could film it !' Good show ,my pile of shame includes 5 boxsets 70 odd magazines with mind attached and ( how did I forget this ?))the original GW " Battle of five armies " box set . Keep up the excellent work and your channel will grow to ginormous proportions mate ,cheers !
Thanks so much for the comment! Lawrence managed to take a part that isn't particular big and turn it into something incredibly memorable. Like I said in the video he is easily my favourite "bad guy" in the movies. I still remember the chills I got in the cinema during that fight scene. The fact people remember the name Lurtz when it isn't even said during the movies is testament to just how well he played that role. Please pass on my thanks for his portrayal if you can. I'm extremely jealous that you have the original "Battle of Five Armies". Were you there with the Haka? I can't even imagine how that would feel. I hope I can grow my channel I really want to bring my love for LOTR to life and meet and talk with other people who share that love.
Thank you, Ugluk looks like a fun mini to paint, with him holding up the head, I don't actually own him I wonder if he is in one of the later magazines.
@hobbyit yea he is a great model. I'm looking forward to painting the head he's holding. Ugluk was magazine number 16. Hopefully you can find a model of him. Sometimes, I see him on trade me here in New Zealand.
@@Jamison1888 Ahh okay, well I do own him then haha, as I have all the remaining magazines I just haven't got to him yet. I'm trying to resist looking ahead until I get there
Hey thank you for the comment. Yes I designed them. I've also slowly improved the design now too, I might do a quick video on them if you'd be interested?
I remember when I tried to create my own hedges, bushes and fields for Shire using sponges, old carpets and boxes. At that time you wouldn't find a spare box or sponge in my house, I wish I bought more of those magazines back in early 2000s.
hi, I've been watching this series religiously! I never had any of these magazines, but was in the Warhammer hobby at the time and have heard about them. I really appreciate you documenting the series, not just doing the flip thru (which is great), but also engaging with the content by doing the activities (both as written, and putting your own spin on them with your 3d printer). Good idea to split out the battle reports, I think you need the right mood to watch them, but your style of battle report is good too (weaving in narrative to explain the dice rolls instead of just being 'i rolled a five to hit and then scored a wound on the strike'. Basically I'm trying to say "bravo, keep at it!"
Hey, thank you very much for the kind words! Glad to have you with me and pleased you are enjoying the series. I still feel there is work to be done to get the best way of showing things but I think I'm getting there.
Thanks for the feedback, I kind of liked the newer looking armour for the Uruk-Hai, like it has just been forged in Isengard, but it is pretty subjective and open to personal preference
@hobbyit it's a fantastic idea, going through all those classic mags step by step, it's something a lot of us wanted to do back in the day, but being ten year olds we had no idea how to go about it 😂
@@irishk7099 For sure, I didn't actually know they existed until last year, once I knew I had to go on the hunt to collect all the magazines, I managed to find all 91 and the 3 extra magazines all of about 8 of the magazines are unopened, ready and waiting for me. Its going to take a while to get through them all I think, but really looking forward to the journey.
@@hobbyit I only missed two or three of them in the original run. That first issue caused a bit of a stir in my school, it was only 2.50 when first released, so we all ended up with multiple issues and about 50- 100 goblins each that we were never gonna paint 😄
@@irishk7099 Haha starting on that pile of shame at a young age :). I mean are you even a true miniature painter if you don't have hordes of unpainted minis that you'll never paint.
Awesome! Me and my gf just started this game i bought rivendell and she bought azog and his legion this really helps me figure out a way to paint all the minis I have thx u! Can't wait to have em all done before her
I kinda agree with this. I think one of my progressions in learning as I make my way through the magazines is probably to focus on creating that additional contrast and seperation
Ah the days before MWF and Heroic actions great to see you doing the idea of playing through the Old Battle Mags I bet Aragon could easily sweep the goblins with today's Rules 👍👍👍
Both hedges came out well. Something I've used for my crafted ones is the thick fibre doormats cut into strips and the spray green. They work really well and have the bonus of being flexible so can run over small hills etc. Have u tried printing out the stls on a FDM printer? I tend to use my FDM for terrain as it's a bit more robust than resin. Looking good
I printed the 30cm hedge on my FDM printer, I do like FDM printing for bigger pieces but prefer the detail and smoothness you get from resin. I have used door mats for some fields, you might see them in an upcoming video where I use them on my farmer maggots field game board.
You definitely have some skills with the brushes. I have the Isengard battleforce to work thru at some point so the skin recipe will be useful. I think I'll probably do my armour a bit more dignned up thou for mine. They look great thou
Thanks, I can feel I'm improving with the brush, I should be . I really dignned up the armour for the Moria Goblins, but kind of liked the idea that the Uruk-Hai armour was more freshly made from Isengard and not yet had the chance to get really rusted up.
@@hobbyit good point I hadn't thought of them being fresh to the front troops... Maybe I'll do a mix vets like the characters and captains a bit more rusted up to show they've seen a few battles and then basic troops a bit cleaner and fresh to the battle...
Hey just found your channel and am just getting into the middle earth games by GW myself. Not quite sure if your aiming your vids at new to the hobby or something else? However i would suggest showing some techniques on how to improve on the basic crafted option as well before just jumping to the 3d prints. Eg putting some sand and flocking down on the base of the ruins. Maybe adding some extra details to the walls with brick cuttouts or scoring brick marks in. Just some ideas not everyone has a 3d printer
Hi, great to have you joining the community!. I guess I'm learning myself where I'm aiming at and taking suggestions from people like yourself is really what I love to do to adapt and make my channel and content better. Its an excellent suggestion to have somewhere in between, I will definitely look to do that in my future videos.
Haha, I guess out of context it is a bit strange. The first one is me following along with what the magazine said to make. And the 3d printing it me updating it.
Amazing job my guy, always really impressed how people can paint such tiny things and always happy to see LoTR characters are still loved and enjoyed :] Wishing you the best in perfecting your craft!
Wish they'd re-release this magazine series, I only got the first few issues when they originally came out. Funnily enough, I've just started to repaint the models as they were only painted (badly) using the paints supplied and the magazines' basic tutorials. Your videos will definitely come in handy, nice one.
That's cool that you have a few to pick back up though. You'll see in a few of my vids that the models came to me painted so had to clean them off. The Uruk-Hai came with blue skin and gold hair for some reason haha.
