39:00 Every genre has its own distinctive language, behaviors, hair style, and dress. If you want to be a heavy metal musician you wouldn't dress like a "mod" you would dress like a punk or a rocker. That is a genre characteristic not a "racial" characteristic. Metallica began their career with typical long hair, and much later in their life when they cut their hair short, there was a tremendous outcry from fans, an outcry which still lasts today, as fans considered short hair in metal to be blasphemous and sacrilegious, as a symbol of conformism, etc, etc; again, this is not a "racial" or "diversity" aspect, it is a musical genre characteristic, a custom, expected by both other musicians and expected by the audience. It is unimaginable that a heavy metal musician would wear a suit-and-tie; perhaps the only musician to ever have done this was Layne Staley, the vocalist of "Alice and Chains", and he changed his asthetic late in his career after a heroin rehab realization that he should "respect the audience by dressing nicely". Dressing out-of-character is not what the audience expects to be on a concert poster and not what the audience expects during the live performance. When cellist Tina Guo performs a metal concert, or performs with Hans Zimmer, she wears a skimpy leather outfit, because it is a genre characteristic, it is what the audience expects, and conversely when she plays orchestral music she dresses in a conservative suit, because again, it is what the audience expects. These genre characteristic differences are independent of diversity or inclusion or equity. As for the comparison to rap music's genre characteristics , and rap being considered as trash by some: rap music is artistically very low-quality composition, that is simply a fact, a result of uneducated artists who do not know how to create anything other than the very lowest complexity art, and this applies to their lyrics, their lyrical themes (guns, drugs, violence, posing as wealthy, womanizing), their need for "diss tracks", their frequent misogynistic themes, the use of ebonics (broken language/accent) leading to unique off-rhymes, etc, etc, as well. It is independent of diversity to state these facts about rap music.

13:30 Counterpoint is the FUNDAMENTAL theory of all musical harmony. Just because YOU can't write it, don't disparage it. And improvisation will always be lesser than deliberate composition. Noodling over jazz chords is not superior composition.

What i remember most about Gail & Joe was meeting them at one of the receptions after a Masterworks concert over 10 or 12 years ago now & how as just a regular chorus member how warm accepting & interested they were in getting to know me & asking about my background in music & what had brought me to the CSO being from out of Stark County. They are wonderfully kind & so welcoming. I always look for them just to say hi. Last season, i remember seeing their bright eyes taking in our choral concert in Massillon after the Masterworks concert...that is a true dedication & we owe them a great deal of gratitide & respect for how steadfast their support for all of us has been...always faithful, a rare caring gracious couple! THANK YOU Gail & Joe!!!

Baroque composers did not play repertoire. They played their own music and improvised upon their own music. Yet students and performers today are forced to memorize repertoire instead of playing their own music, and this is called "modern". The problem in academic music organizations and performing arts organizations is the FORCED REPERTOIRE and ANTI-IMPROVISATION, not the ethnicity or diversity of the repertoire! Get rid all "Canon books of music" and the problem of work-bias is eliminated!

diversity? what diversity? it is 2023 and electric guitarists are still not 'allowed' to study classical composition or perform classical works in an academic environment or orchestra environment. meanwhile since ~1970, the #1 musical instrument in America and the entire WORLD is the electric guitar.

Excellent program discussion! As a lifelong educator the theme best expressed was the notion of EQUITY (as opposed to equality) & INCLUSION (as opposed to catering); something that was always a matter of intentionality as a purpose; giving all students an investment in the programming of our educational space; making it OUR space, meaning that it meant looking for opportunities to feel they belonged by recognizing and affirming differences as accepted (rather than being tolerated). The same thing applied to the way i coached our basketball team. Why our classroom was referred to as the real-life Dead Poets Society.

Thanks everyone. Really interesting, honest and necessary discussion here. I hope everyone, including the League of American Orchestras will become aware of this series. In a time of great need and soul-searching, both, any and all solutions are needed going forward.

Angie hit the nail on the head: we've got to show how classical music is not just these cold, lifeless notes on paper, but a historical context for the composer and a personal challenge for musicians today to bring to life every time. One could call it a GAME or a SPORT, the object of which might be "to make this one performance TRULY matter." Let's bring out the HAM!

Great converZation! Gerhardt always tells such inspiring stories. Naturally, I appreciate the mentions of my work “Essay After Sibelius” and my two CutTime® ensembles. Btw, my essay is NOT one of the works with urban pop or jazz: it’s just straight up unadulterated romantic expression! Hopefully we might be able to schedule that performance soon!

Very nice! Maybe you can tell me: what is the difference between a bass, a bass fiddle, and a double bass. I have a friend in England who plays a double bass and it looks the same to me!
