Thanks for the nice & interesting programs Dodger! How many days do you suggest for a visit? Can you say something about the budget a day for this trip on site?
I did my tour in three days on foot. I suppose if you had a car it would be possible to see most locations in a couple of days. I do believe that you miss that feeling of being close in so many different ways when walking across the ground. I would have liked to have walked from La Belle Alliance to Hougoumont for example and also gone to Plancenoit so maybe four days would be ideal. Thanks for your kind comment about the films. I am so glad you have enjoyed the series. I also went to Napoleon's tomb in May this year and created a film about that visit too.
Thanks so much Elaine for your kind words. I am so pleased you enjoyed the video. The accordian player was great, lovely to listen and added an extra layer of French flavour to that street corner. I also enjoyed the saxaphone player as well. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Andrea. A number of people have reached out to me since the video came out and the Briggs family are well remembered. Apparently the garden faced the dam and was beautiful, as you mention Mrs Briggs sold flowers. Thanks for taking the time to post your comment.
At my first trip to this historical place i made the mistake to get off the train at Waterloo. The closest station near the battlefield is indeed Braine-l'Alleud. It was a long time ago in a cold winter. Very long walk but as a young student i loved it. Recently i visited the place again after 30yrs. I saw a completely new underground visitor center which was nice. On the other hand many of the nice small shops in the streets did not exist anymore. Big malls instead.

Thank you for this video, I'm currently researching the area for an animation I have planned and videos like this give a really good idea of scale and layout that maps don't always give. Would love to visit one day!
I really appreciate you watching and taking the time to post your very kind words. It is pleasing to know that you enjoyed it and found it useful in preparation with your project. Good luck with the animation and I hope you get to visit the battlefield one day.

CAn't beat the tradtional boozers but like you say there's too few of them left. The pub landlord doesn't stand much chance and can't compete with the chains and gastro pubs.
@@DodgersTrips My dad took Shirley to a Berni Inn in the late 60's before they went to a local reggae bar and danced into the early hours. My dad wouldn't let her pay for anything and told me that when they returned to his home in Oakenshaw he was rewarded with a night he would never forget. A car collected her the following morning and before it set off she said to him "look out for my next single". She released "Big Spender" a couple of months later and sent my dad a signed copy which he still has to this day.
Time was against Napoleon. He lost time and troops at Hougoumont and was delayed at La Haye Sainte. By 7pm [?] the Prussians had arrived in force and the rest is history.
So many factors made the difference between success or not on the day but I think Wellington having the time to choose his ground and realising the importance of the fortified salients was huge. On the contrary, Napoleon did not realise their value until too late. Thanks for watching the video and taking the time to post your comment. It is much appreciated.
@@DodgersTrips Thankyou for your excellent coverage, I am from Australia and never been to the battlefield. Yes only a short battle [ 11am to 9pm] but so much happened, the often neglected forming of the anti cavalry squares and the arrival of the Prussians probably two main events of the battle. Wellington was a very competent leader his strategy being to hold the French in place until Blucher arrived, it worked but only just. The last hour of the battle is brushed over [even in the otherwise excellent De Laurentis film] and the effect of the Prussian arrival. Apparently the Prussian accounts tell more, their artillery [16 guns] were slowed down on the saturated roads and arrived about 8pm. These were very effective in breaking the French formations, apparently Wellington sent a rider to tell the Prussians to cease fire so they could advance across the field. I notice once again GB has problems, I wish you well.
Thank you for taking the additional few seconds to post your comment Michael, following the seven minutes that you clearly felt you'd wasted by watching the film. It is much appreciated.

You know it's funny what you remember. I don't recall it being a dirty city but a friend mentioned that when he saw some of my videos of the 2024 trip saying that "they had cleaned it up a lot" so he had the same impression as you when he visited.
Fantastic video Dodger, tugged at my heart strings big time while you was at Repton boxing club, which also i did alot sparring with the late great Mr Tony Burns, MBE, so many memories there with the pics and original tiles which i remember to this day, and of course your other journeys in the east end, especially the iconic graves. Gonna say, if the Krays were about today there would be no more of this nonsense in my beloved east end.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video Bobby. Thanks for watching and sharing something of your own experiences at Repton. Brilliant Club they do some great work. I think the days of the Krays are long gone I don't see how they would be able to have the same hold on things these days. A different era. All the best to you.
Batley Variety club not far away offering many fantastic nights out but sadly I have no desire to go back to Dewsbury after being told, by 5 youths in a hatchback, to “ get back to my ’own’ country”. And that was 20 years ago.
Unbelievable what an experience. Sorry to hear that. Batley Variety was fantastic, when you look at the people who took the stage there, such a shame it couldn't keep going. I saw where they recently put a blue plaque on the building that now is on that location.
Batley Variety Club closed in 1978 when the Corrigans separated. It re-opened briefly as Crumpets nightclub by Betty Corrigan, before reopening as the Frontier Club in the early 1980s. The Frontier remained open until 2016. The building still stands and has been converted to a gym
spent many happy hours in the John F in the late 80s. Great beer, great crowd and incredible jukebox. and never any bother. I pass it fairly regularly and wish it was still open.
The jukebox nearly always gets a mention. It would be great to have the JFK jukebox as a playlist in the car. People only seem to have nice memories which is a lovely testament to Ted & Sue. Thanks for taking the time to post your comment and watch the video.

Great pub in its day. One of the first pubs I ever went into. Ted and Sue taught me how to pull a pint and I worked there for a short time. Best pint of Tetleys in the area :)
Brilliant to hear your story Karen. This is the first time I've heard from sombody who worked there. I hope the film brought back a few happy memories for you.
@@DodgersTrips It certainly did, that was 40+ years ago and I did part time bar work for years afterwards. It had the best juke box and beer in town :)
There is a pub in Sheffield called the Grapes on trippet lane that has a room all dedicated to JFK. Definitely worth a look if your interested in stuff like that.
Thanks for telling me about The Grapes Sean. Definitely sometwhere that I'd be interested in seeing. I have half a plan to do a tour of Yorkshire and needed to visit somewhere historic in Sheffield so that would be ideal.
My nan & grandad lived at 166, the end house of the group. My every weekend was spent there as I grew up, 'til they were moved on to a high rise near Bow Flyover. I was 14 at that time, as I recall, born '54 so that would've been '68 ish when the terrace was demolished. Nan & me mum were on good terms with Vi, the mother & I well remember how my heart would sink if they got chattin' with her 'cos they'd go on for what seemed like bleedin' hours whilst I sat at the kerb digging at ants with an old lolly stick or the like to pass the time. One such time, about age ten, I was kicking an old, threadbare, tennis ball against Vi's wall when Reg came out the door & tried to dribble the thing off of me....he succeeded but I stamped on one of his super shinny winkle-pickers by accident & he gave me a clip round the ear....nothing nasty, more in fun really but me mum didn't half give him a roasting! "Oy, oy...keep yer bleedin hands to yerself you big lump a lard...or else" Vi was a sweetie...she'd often call us kids in to the house & give us bread & jam slices with sugar sprinkled all over. Both me grandad & me dad did odd jobs for the twins...don't think they ever got money for that, very little if any at all but being in their favour was kinda worth a whole lot more...& when I say odd jobs that would be nothing naughty. Despite the reputation from afar, some most certainly well earned, the boys were the local social services & police rolled into one for us locals, they were always known/seen to be fair. So if you behaved reasonably in the community then you were treated fairly in return...step outa line tho' & you could be in deep shit! Guess many would be shocked at the rough justice at play but it bloody well worked & the area was super safe for the women & kids back then, the old/sick/infirm treated like royalty. Example...my family frequented the Barley Mow pub down the road a bit, as did the Kray family/friends at times & as 166, being the end terrace, had a fair bit of garden compared to the others so the pub would more often than not turn out to then turn up at nan/grandads....blokes filing down Vallance Rd with wooden crates of Manns brown ale, boxes of Babycham , Warninks Advocaat & the like! One such evening one of the party go'ers was an uncle Benny (as a kid everyone was an aunt/uncle tho' few actually were) The fella was well pissed & stank of booze when he came into the wee bedroom upstairs where I'd been sent to keep away from the craziness. He tried it on with me but lucky for me he was too pissed & I managed to get away to run downstairs to my mum/nan....who of course went straight to my dad/grandad who in turn went to report `elsewhere`. I remember standing in the hallway as uncle Benny was politely escorted out the door & sent packing...no big scene whatsoever....and I also remember sitting on the stairs, listening to me mum/nan chattin in the kitchen a few days later, as to how Benny had been found that morning round the back of Fingalbaum's Fish & Chips in Bethnal Green Rd, castrated & bleeding to death...rushed off to Mile End Hospital but died en route.
This is one of the best accounts I've ever read of that area and those times. Thank you for sharing all those memories and I'm sure many others will read and appreciate your stories. I love all the small detail. It took me back to my childhood when you talk about prodding the ants with an old lolly stick. You always had to watch out for thos eants when you were sat on the footpath wearing short trousers. I'm sure you could write a good book filled with your adventures growing up and coming across the different characters. A world now disappeared,
I think it's great that the JFK name is still there and the old Tetley sign as well. If the use of the building ever changes those two should be put in Dewsbury museum.
I was going to ask you what MC meant but I've just figured it out. I suppose it always comes down to use 'em or lose 'em. Thanks for your comment and for watching the video.
Unbelievable! I suppose its a 24/7 operation for them. I think the tower stays open until 1am in summer because there's a restaurant up there. I bet you turned up thinking you have the place to yourself. Thanks for taking the time to share your story John.
Not much parking out front though. I imagine back in the the day it would have been a sight to behold before the dual carriageway was built. Nice idea though, to be able to hear that jukebox again..
I played in a casual football team in the early 90's and we used to play regularly against pub teams who wanted to play friendlies. Once or twice we played against Ted's team. Toe-Poke Ted we called him lol. He was reportedly in his early fifties then so it wouldn't surprise me to hear he was at least 85 or so, as of 2024
Brilliant remembrance of Ted. Sounds like he may have been a "Sniffer" Clarke type footballer. Good for him. I wonder if anybody else played for or against the JFK.
Haha well done Dodger. I haven't watched the full video yet, but he's incriminated himself in the first 10 seconds by walking down a prohibited pedestrian area

I'm so please the film has triggered some happy memories and I like your story of Ted sweeping. It reminded me of a place where I used to work and we would splash loads of soapy water on the seats to make people leave at closing time.
