Well said i have 7mm08,3006,35 whelen and i hust got a 308 use the same shell holder exept for my 6.5 PRC but just doing loads for my new ruger 308 and season my barrel just desper to see how good is my first 308.
@neilmurphy4301 the ABLR. It's got to be either how it was ground down, the camera angle, or a combination of such. The ABLR'S are one of my favorites and by far most used.
You have to move them slow when trying to find the minimum velocity they will still perform at. As far as for gelatin there has been lots of studies done to create testing mediums and the industry has settled on 10% gelatin when testing for hunting purposes and that does take into consideration bone and hide. Live/green bone and hide have minimal effect on a bullet. I have confirmed that with my own testing.
I'm a big "no" for a non-expanding bullet. I have a load for a 156 gr Norma Oryx from my .260 REM that, if I ever find a moose, will be my choice. Of course, they disconinued the design. :-(
ELDX not menrtioned in this vid. Interesting... Mulling over ELDX vs. ABLR at 6.5 cm, 308 win, 300PRC @ distance (sub 2850fps velocities). Have full confidence in TBT as they shot well in 308 but trying to dumb it down for good performance on deer deer AND heavier elk..
I only use the ELD-X in rifles that I have set up with muzzle velocities at or under 2700 fps because of how bad they come apart. ABLR's are what I currently use the most and absolutely love them.
Great infor! Sadly i have been reloading since the 80's and alway firm believer in cup and core bullets, one i favor was 170gr round nose soft point out of 308 and 06 running around 2700fps max did beautiful on deer and elk out to 400 yards. Though now days bonded and all copper bullets are starting to take the show!
@nathanhatcher7096 with increased velocity, a bullet with more integrity is necessary. I have a few rifles that I mostly have used for doe management but have also harvested bucks and elk with that I use cup core bullets in. They all have muzzle velocities between 2500-2700 fps. I have a 6.5 Creedmoor that I have shooting the 140gr ELD-M's at 2600 fps. That's my go to doe management gun. I have dropped everyone I have shot with that gun to just over 600 yards. Cup and core and be extremely effective and not destroy meat if ones muzzle velocities are not too high.
Just bought 3 factory loaded boxes of these by Swift Ammunition Co. can’t wait to try them so I’m glad to see you video using the bullet. I’d like to eventually load some of these myself.. Glad I could find you videos on them! What powder and brass did you use for your test loads?
I have a question. Can a gun smith shorten my long range hells canyon max long range? I am wanting to get a suppressor but its already 26 inches and afraid that its going to Be way too long to hunt with walking through the trees. Be like 32-34 in barrel. Wanting to cut it down to like 22 inches. Thanks.
30ish yards on a whitetail doe. I like them on smaller and medium sized game with muzzle velocities around 2700 fps and have harvested whitetails from 30-600 yards with them.
Late to the vid, but you should try the Accubond LR. It is designed to open up at lower velocities at long range. But then, it might not do so well at higher velocities. I'll keep looking for a vid on these.
Have you considered doing any gel testing of the Apex Outdoors mono bullets? I think your approach to this testing is far more valuable and realistic than most of the impact testing I have seen. Keep up the good work! :)
Most comments here are 4 yr ago. Picked a used one up at a value price. Tritium dead (5yr) guarantee. Replenish requires exchange/purchase new slide. Fiberoptics good daytime. Added used std 365 three-tritium upper. All good, 2 options. Nice pistol.
I agree with you wholeheartedly Except for the thought about the bergers Can they kill? Yes But high bc cup and core bullets can have extraordinary failure Some will even push upder the hide and ride along only to be found randomly under the hide completely without evidence of how they got there
you have to bump the shoulder back a few ten-thousands back past standard length in order to get them to chamber for the first fringing (fire forming). Other than a shoulder crushing occasionally moving that much brass, as long as I bump the shoulder back far enough I haven't had any issues with using 270 and 300 WSM brass for my 6.8 western.
So 600 to 800 yards, depending on muzzle velocity being, say 2550 to 2750 fps? For perspective, a .357 Magnum will do between 1400 and 1500 fps from a 158 gr in a 6+ inch revolver. So .357 Magnum energy from an expanding bullet at 600+ yards? Not bad! And you can get Hornady Black with the 168 gr Amax for $1.60-ish a pop, which also isn't bad for match .308 Win, these days. I am in the process of putting an 18 inch Proof and a Dead Air Sandman on a DMR themed AR-10, and I gotta say, this bullet is checking a lot of boxes for a do-all load in this rifle.
Using Partitions for the last 44 yrs, haven't had a reason to change, I never fear a hard quartering shot, a hoop shot or a frontal shot when needed, sometimes that's all you get at a moose or elk, I hunted BC and AB , I didn't know what I'd see for sure, for many years, could have up to all 4 different tags, WT, MD, elk and moose, partitions got it done. Meat loss was something I was willing to sacrifice at times, most of the time, didn't have to.
I’ve seen nothing in the internet but videos of these bullets failing in game on hunts and like this But on the videos cutting edge posts their all work miraculously
I really wanted my rifle to like the terminal ascent’s. First two shots at 100 yards went through the same hole. 3rd shot was 1.5 inches off. Then I got a 5.5 inch group at 300. Berger 168gr hybrid hunter’s got a 1/2” group at 100 and under an inch at 300, though I realize that was likely a bit of a fluke. Still impressive. Thoroughly impressed with the accuracy of the bergers so I at least have my fallback round if I can’t find a good bonded bullet that my rifle shoots well. Appreciate the content!
My 6.5 PRC loves the terminal ascent. Recently shot out the back of truck on paper at 425 yards to see what a 200 yard zero would be in drop. Only 9 inches and the group was 2.5. They are coming out of the 24 inch barrel between 3150-3180 fps
Not a very good test when you haven’t got any all copper bullets shush as the Barnes TTSX that happens to be probably the best overall hunting bullet ever designed!
Hammer Bullets would like your style of testing. I bet if you had time to do testing, they'd may work with you But who knows..... thay have quite a team already Great video
Very much agree with what you're saying. I like how the 208 ELDM run in the 308 as well. Not so fast, but it keeps its speed and does a great job. Rogee Hunting out of New Zealand runs the 208 ELDM in a Tikka 300 wsm with fantastic success on even smaller game at distance.
Those velocities are wild...with how different the two Barnes are! I don't load 6.5 but ~300 fps less velocity...? wow! May I ask you what powder it was and charge?
Very encouraging to hear. Was interested in something like this for my son and was concerned the short barrel would be crazy loud. If that's all the velocity you've lost though I'm assuming that at ~20 inches there's no perceivable difference than a long barrel? Plenty of compact 243 youth guns out there but after being next to them at the range, no thank you. Very excited to get a 6.8 going and working up some mild loads for him :)
