Ballistic gel testing the all new for 2022 Hornady CX 120gr 0.264 shot out of a 6.5 Creedmoor. Most advanced monolithic on the market. Or so Hornady clames. Definently preformed well in the gel testing.

Awesome man, thank you for this. Gives a realistic range of ~450yds at 2900fps MV before you're below 2000fps. At 450yds you'd have 16.8" drift at 10mph and 1050ftlb remaining.

Thank you SMF! Completely verifies what Hornady has been saying. 2000 fps should be considered the minimum impact velocity for proper expansion. Cheers

I wish Hornady would have made the bullet to perform at lower velocity. Since the monolithic bullet isn't going to fragment, they could afford to expand faster. These seam much like Barnes TTSX etc. Cutting Edge, Lehigh Defense and Hammer bullets seam to have better designs for lower velocities while providing good penetration. Thanks for another great video.

Agreed

It actually performed well at subsonic velocity. Yawing can be effective as far as wrecking shop is concerned in a soft target.

It is a nice option for my .300 ultra mag because of the same reasons it's not a great option out of my 6.5 grendel, just depends on your application
@Rico11b

Great test!!! It needs to have better expansion at the lower velocity. Even with your highest velocity of 2883 fps only the front half of the bullet had any damage or expanding. It would be great if you could get at least 3/4 to 7/8 of the bullet to mushroom and expand. Then at the lower velocities you can still get dependable expansion. It should be mushrooming at 1500 fps or even down to about 1300 fps. That way you can still get reliable expansion at extreme distance. With your test there it shows that by the time the bullet reaches 700 yards there won't be enough velocity to get any expansion on the bullet.
@simplemindedfella
@simplemindedfella Год назад
Correct. These are definitely not a good option for over 400 yard shots out of the average rifle. For extended ranges with monolithic bullets I recommend Hammer Bullets first choice and the Cutting-edge Maximus (The Maximus line of bullets are the only bullets by Cutting-edge I would recommend for hunting)

Another great test, thank you. I’m wondering if some annealing of the front half of the bullet would help it expand at lower velocities? Years ago I watched an Aussie channel and he was heating A-Maxes front sections with a small torch then dropping them in water to preserve the plastic tips. He was killing feral goats at ranges past 700 yards and was getting better kills with the home annealed bullets than factory ones. This spring I’m going to try this with my stockpile of 140 grain 7mm TTSX’s. Back in 2018 I got lucky in a trade deal and got 10 new boxes of 50. I’m too old to ever use them up hunting now so there’s plenty to experiment with.

Must say quite upset with Hornady for getting rid of GMX , as with factory GMX 130gr Outfitter for the 270 win i am getting less .8 of a MOA at 100 and now worried if these will do the same
@simplemindedfella
@simplemindedfella 2 года назад
The differences are so little you will most likely get the same results. They literally just put a heat shield tip in the GMX and cut the relief grooves differently so it's slightly more aerodynamic else wise it's the same bullet.
@nemanjarasula1599
@nemanjarasula1599 2 года назад
@@simplemindedfella Great to hear Sir! I was scratching my head when i noticed the difference and thinking to myself why not just leave the GMX? Wish they made the CX that it would expand between 1600fps and 1800fps
@simplemindedfella
@simplemindedfella 2 года назад
@@nemanjarasula1599 I really wish they would have used a different copper alloy in the CX line as well cause that's my biggest complaint with them and bullets like Barnes they just don't open at low enough velocity to be good at any kind of longer distances. 99% of my shots are within 400 yards so it noa a big deal but it would have been nice.
@nemanjarasula1599
@nemanjarasula1599 2 года назад
@@simplemindedfella I totally agree with you. For what i do GMX serves me fine as 90% of my shots are in the 200m range and sometimes past 300m but i prefer to come in closer if able to. ( Knowing i can extend it to 450 meters is a relief knowing the bullet will perform 2057fps and maybe 475 meters as it would be doing 2007fps) I have never seen monos as long range bullets as there is others out there. Barnes claim some extrodinary numbers but i can not comment on them as i have not used them but i would say it be pretty similar to CX maybe they would gain you 100 yards more.
@simplemindedfella
@simplemindedfella 2 года назад
@@nemanjarasula1599 the new Barnes LRX would at best get you another 100 yards only because of the slightly better ballistic coefficiencies. The LRX has needed just as much velocity as the TTSX in all my testing. Both are good bullets if one doesn't push the distance. Cutting-Edge Maximus has performed the best at lower velocities for me followed closely by Hammer Hunters. As a reloader I am really liking Hammer Bullets.

I like to keep it 200 fps or so faster in any recommendations because gelatin is not an animal, and not all animals have the same density of hide/bone/meat and such. Yes, 10% gelatin is the standard set based on averages in testing but is not 100% accurate. (No test medium is)

@@simplemindedfella you are welcome, I have done loooots of testing. A bag off clothes easy stops any bullet. Behind gel, and its resuable. Verry hightech yes🤣🤣🤣 I was mainly interested in big bore subsonic performance on game a while ago. I used a 450bm and the bag would stop a subsonic 450bm 395gr sub x bullet without gel.

Pretty much. Its just the GMX with the heat shield tip and they cut the relief grooves slightly different for allegedly less wind drag. I see no difference in performance.
