I love that they could have given Emily and Richard the typical loveless marriage seen from wealthy older couples in fiction but instead chose to have them genuinely love each other in their own way.
One of things I like about this show is the commitment the characters have to each others welfare. Rory goes off to see about her father because she sees his pain. Say what you like about the inconsistencies and plot holes, this show has heart.
The first time I saw Edward Herrman was in The North Avenue Irregulars. I remember almost nothing about that movie except that it was a fun movie, and Edward Herrman was adorable. He stood out in the movie, as he did in Overboard and Lost Boys and as Franklin Roosevelt and as a surgeon unraveling in MASH. He was marvelous everything I saw him in.
I love that song! To be honest,.I didn't know it 'til "Iowa". That moment Alicia put on hear earphones, I knew immediately that this would become one of "these songs" you sometimes stumble upon and just love it even having heard just one tone… Talking about Iowa - It also happened to me with "Jesse Woods - Gold In The Air". If I recall it right, this great, great song was played in the end of season 4's Girls episode ("Triggering"?), in which Hannah is studying and struggling with the pushback from her fellow students that question her skills as a writer/author nd in… yeah, Iowa. 🙃 Her BFF Elijah visits her surprisingly and the two go party hard. They crah this party, get totally wasted, dance like Berserks and start to spread their NY weirdo brain f**** over literally everyone there. Total desaster… 🤣 Leaving a huge mess behind and totally done, they start to walk their way home (to Hannah's apartement) in the early morning hours. Everything is quiet and nice, the absolute counterpoint to everything within those last hours… And this is when "Gold In The Air" softly finds its way into that scene… Great director's work, dear #JessePeretz!
