Team PRO! Lived here my entire life and wouldn’t have it any other way. Thanks for presenting a balanced, unbiased assessment of living in NH. Everyone can have an opinion about pros and cons, but these can be so subjective. People complain about winter weather but there is an upside too. For me, when the garden is resting so am I. I find winter restful and restorative and a time to do craft projects, visit with friends, visit museums etc. On the weather discussion, my husband and I always remark that we don’t worry about wildfires, flooding, tornadoes, hurricanes etc. that other parts of the country have. We just don’t have those kinds of catastrophes. All in all it is a pretty great place to live.
Having grown up in Nh and then moved out to Upstate NY - NH is more expensive. Yes I now I have sales tax and income tax but the cost of real estate and college is soooooooo much cheaper.
We had to escape the hell hole of IL for TX. After being here for a few years we’re learning that sometimes it’s liberty in name only. And it’s hot as hell. Looking forward to our move to NH!!

I was raised in New Hampshire and lived there for almost 60 years. I had to move out because of the property taxes. I love New Hampshire and I hated to move. When planning my retirement I realized that my $7,000 a year property taxes was going to be too high in my retirement years. I live in Florida now, in an adult community and my property taxes are under $1,000 a year. There isn’t any snow in Florida. I shoveled snow in NH for over 50 years and that was long enough.
If you are not an Euro Commie, NH may not be cheap, but is the closest to be as fair as it can. If propriety taxes were lower, it would be perfect. Cheers!

How do I calculate what the property tax would be for the years when the trees are growing but not being cut? Thank you!
At 2:28 we don't have a sales tax, but beer is taxed, wine and liquor are not taxed. If you dine out - fast food to 5 star - we have a meals tax. Think convenience store food items are taxed. We have a tax on gasoline/diesel and on cigarettes. We have no income tax (except on dividends) and no inheritance tax, but our property taxes are higher. Liquor can only be purchased at state liquor stores - We have some stores on our highway rest stops.
The point of concealed carry, is that it is concealed. I have been in hugging distance of people i knew were carrying, who i could not tell were carrying. I am sure anyone in NH has been too.
You need to provide more information about laws like seat belts and helmets. It is fine with me if you don't want to use them but if someone sustains deeper injuries because of that decision am I paying for it? Most insurance companies pool a group of people and offer good rates at first and then raise rates as more and more of those people get sick or injured. I sure am not interested in paying for others stupidity.

I have lived here 60 years. It is not affordable for anyone making less than $250,000 a year. There is no housing available - there is a housing shortage. Even apartments are impossible to get because many of them became condos 10 years ago. Most homes here go for over $300,000. That would be for a split level ranch that needed updating, in a town north of Concord on the 16th of an acre. To get a nice 3 bedroom house on a nice 3-acre lot, in a Town that is a short commute to desirable jobs, you're talking a half million and up. New Hampshire is a beautiful state with oceans and mountains, it has a lot of medical resources available, and away from the cities the standard of living is excellent. New Hampshire cities are not as bad as Massachusetts cities, however they were once beautiful pristine and safe in a way somebody half my age wouldn't understand. New Hampshire used to be a Republican state, but the influx of people from New York and Massachusetts have turned the seacoast and cities blue. Away from there, we are rural country folk and very conservative. One thing New Hampshire does not seem to run out of is water. In other states, there are water issues, but New Hampshire only has a serious drought every 30 years or so. In fact, we had so much rain last year, it caused a fungus which is causing the white pine trees to drop all their needles. That is a whole nother problem. Sometimes we have so much water the roads wash out. I almost didn't mention that we get snow and ice potentially for 6 months out of the year, from late November through March, and sometimes into April and early May. We are one of the few states that still has at least two active shopping malls - The Mall of New Hampshire in Manchester and the pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua. There may be others, however, those are the two that I'm aware of that seem to still be very active despite the economy. New Hampshire did not shut down the way the rest of the country did during covid. Many of us remained working. New Hampshire workers have a good work ethic and there is plenty of work to be had here. But there is no place to live. So there you have it. NH is a very expensive state with a housing crisis in one of the most beautiful places in the country. If you are anything but upper middle class and beyond, moving here will be very difficult for you. You may have to live in a neighboring state and drive-in, but even then, housing costs in the Northeast are very expensive. My daughter has a two-bedroom apartment in Manchester. It cost her $2,000 a month - and it's not that nice. Think long and hard before you move here.
Born and raised in Pennsylvania and imported to New Hampshire by Sig Sauer nearly 8 years ago and luv New Hampshire! Far better than PA and yes it's not cheap here but neither was PA. Property tax is up there but parts of PA are just as bad but you have absolutely everything in PA is also taxed, so you are nickel and dimed to death. Job opportunities are fantastic in the seacoast area.
And NO EMINENT DOMAIN! Went out of my way to be in NH and stay in NH. It is my first choice among states for many reasons. Yet, like everywhere else there are unfortunate limits. Showy fireworks allowed but not firecrackers or purely exploding fireworks, vehicle inspections should be dropped as they are in Florida, restrictions on building on class 6 roads should be removed, most zoning restrictions should be removed, wetland restriction need drastic update or removal for single family homes, septic system and waste water regulations need drastic update as they do not currently even allow perfectly sanitary alternative systems. Permits for raising fish like tillapia should be eliminated. Specific requirements to be called a Naturopathic doctor were made law because one school offering that training lobbied for it to the exclusion of others. Curtilage rights of government trespass should be completely eliminated. Homeschool restrictions could be improved. And many other things.
I think it's important to understand why the minimum wage in New Hampshire hasn't gone up in years. To be clear, virtually no one of any age actually works for minimum wage. The reason for this is New Hampshire consistently has one of the lowest unemployment rates in America, and as a result, employers have to pay higher wages to get workers. This has resulted in many or most unskilled workers getting 10, 12, or 15 dollars an hour without any experience at all. To be clear, it's not enough money to live on because housing in New Hampshire is very expensive. However, it's more than enough money for a high school or college age kid who's still living at home. The good news is that skilled workers with training and experience can expect much higher wages... especially in the trades. Although lots of people in New Hampshire have College Degrees, pay and other compensation really depends on what their degree is in, which doesn't necessarily guarantee a higher salary. To be fair, I know Plumbing and Electrical Contractors that make as much or more than people with College Degrees. Again, an experienced tradesman can do very well in New Hampshire. HVAC and Refrigeration Technicians can make 30 to 40 dollars an hour. Welders and Pipe Fitters can make big money too. Heavy Equipment Operators and Truck Drivers can make very good wages as well. It really depends on what you do, how much experience you have, and how good you are.
They told me boston has the highest rent in the country and im curious if nahua,was so high because of spillover from boston. Wondering if concord was any cheaper.
NH is the freest state in the union according to the Cato Institute's bi-annual rankings for 2023. I've lived in 40+ places in my lifetime, and like NH for many of the non-financial reasons discussed. It was just a nice place to live. Also, the Concord legislature seems to be one of the best local area representative state legislatures, and I suspect that is the reason for the high Cato rating.
O there is more. One I can think of Maine and mass banned flavored vape for people over 21yrs old!! New Hampshire did not That’s right states are banning flavored vapes not for under 21 but for people over 21
NH is an outrageously expensive place to live so if you're thinking about moving from NY, Cali, or Massachusetts it's probably best to just stay wherever you're living now.
A realtor told me that rent has have gone up because remote working, high wage people from cities have moved here and the property owners can get away with inflating the price. NH isn’t safe from the greed that is everywhere else. Prices of everything has jumped and is making it hard to live. I suppose if you have a two income household it’s probably easier but if you are a single mother it’s a struggle.
RE: Not required to wear seatbelts over the age of 18. Just out of interest, when adults visit amusement parks in New Hampshire that have roller coasters (or any other rides for that matter), are the riders who are over 18 years old given a choice not to wear a safety harness ? If so, I assume there are plenty of adults who choose not to. How does that work out for them? Any deaths or injuries? If there's no choice, why not?
Under 18 you have to wear a seatbelt/helmet, but over 18 you don't? Well that makes no sense. So on the one hand they're acknowledging the true and proven benefits of wearing seatbelts/helmets, but once you reach a certain age, those benefits are a choice? Yet even in NH, it's a proven fact there are more deaths and injuries when a person doesn't wear these. Those poor families who have to look after someone who otherwise wouldn't have sustained a serious injury, decided not to wear a seatbelt/helmet, then sustains life-altering injuries for the rest of their life. How selfish. What, just for the sake of having to do something as innocent as wearing a seatbelt/helmet?

It had nothing to do with people owning guns for self-defense. It was written after an event (the war of independence) when it was determined that America lacked firepower. Come forward 250 years, now with a very strong military, I think America now has adequate firepower. "being necessary to the security of a free State". Not for self-defense. In fact, now, not at all. Anyone who believes guns beat guns, or more guns beat guns, are proven wrong every single day. I just think of those poor children who innocently lose their lives because it's a person's right to own a semi-automatic rifle.
