I have been cycling for over 30 years and love to share my adventures on my bikes, some on my own and some with my wife Katie. I also love to try out new cycling stuff and give honest reviews so if this sounds good then please subscribe as I post a video (or two) every week.
I got a pair of "Ridge Leisure cycling shoes" from Halfords a few Years ago. Cannot fault the things so far for comfort and value for money . Was £34 . They are £40 now . Also use them with spds road and off road if you want. Yeah I like the ones that look like trainers but can handle multi ride tasks and also ok for a bit of walking.
The type you can walk on are better in my opinion as you sometimes need to walk. I remember years back I had a puncture and tried to replace the tube only to fine the new tube was faulty. I had no phone with me at the time and it was to far to walk with the standard cycling shoes I had even thought it was only a few miles so I had to borrow a phone off a farmer and get picked up. If I had cycling shoes I could walk in I could have easily walked home
Good review and its nice to see your still riding the fury john I'm gonna pick one up next week can you recommend any good bike stem risers for it I'm not great with measurements but anyway good video 👍👍
Thank you very much for the kind words. I love my Fury its been an excellent bike and such good value for money. I used an adjustable stem to lift my bars up you can see that here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0ZeusVyAGVg.html also have a look at this video where I changed to much more comfortable handlebars ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xBsp0SuNTSw.html
Yes if on a long ride you might need padded shorts and to be fair these are not made specifically for cycling but I thought they could work especially on shorter rides and maybe to work etc
We’ve recently booked a few days at a seafront hotel in Whitley Bay for our three day cycling tour for next year. Usually the base is in Newcastle but this time we’ve opted for a more coastal base. Looking forward to it 👍
Great video as usual John, it looks a lovely route and reminds me of one of my favourite paths, the cycle route 5 in north Wales which runs along side of the beach and Irish sea. Well done John and Katie😊
I have had a few helmets. I have only had one very comfortable helmet, but unfortunately it isn't very good at protecting your head from the light crashes. According to Virginia Tech, the helmet I had would protect my head from most major concussions, but wouldn't do much against the usual bumps. I'm thinking of buying a better helmet, but I don't want a helmet that is uncomfortable. Thanks for the review, you may just have sold me on the Outdoor Master Gem. It got a five star safety review by Virginia Tech, so that is also a plus. God bless, and safe riding
Thank you for the kind comments 🙂 Yes a good helmet is of course vital but it does have to be comfortable to or you wont like using it. The Ooutdoor master helmet was very comfortable and fitted my head snugly
Well I always carry a new tube and puncture repair kit with small pump . Plus a few tools to tighten bolts etc. I also have a bell as you need one these days on shared tracks as there are a LOT of dog walker's. I carry a small tiny phone for emergency
Covered some of that route when we rode up to Durham a couple of days ago, through Littletown and passing that quarry. Came back through Sunderland Bridge, Hett and Bishopton Middleham, which was a bit lumpy to say the least 😉👍
Yes is a lovely area for sure 🙂 No we didn't go back to the footbridge. To be honest there was lots of other areas we could have explored but we had so much to see that week we just never had the time.... Its hard work holidaying you know 😁
Thank you Tom - Yes the rain did not stop the fun but I think the fact it was warm helped. You hardly noticed it was wet to be honest and it did dry up during most of the event
I ALWAYS FIND COMMON SENSE FROM BRITS ... HONEST TO GOD ... WHEREVER I USUALLY SEE OTHER COUNTRIES ARE MORE BRAIN WASHED ... BRITS NOT SO MUCH ... BIG KUDOS IN THIS DNAGE ... BRG FROM EU SLOVENIA ❤ LIVED IN UK FOR A MONTH ON WESTGATE ON SEA....
Yes anything cycling now can be VERY expensive but saying that you can shop around and find some bargains. I have cycling tops off Aliexpress which I still use and are great value ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VW44x2RWcl4.html
People neglect oldschool commuting bikes and industry became TOO MUCH sporty. This is exactly oldschool handlebar just a little lower and with so little less sweep... Only Dutch have some really practical bikes and some are in Germany as long as I seen. For giggles I made for myself bicycle on automotive belt and cogs, single speed from old road bicycle with adequate geometry... It is much more fun than my MTB hardtail with derailers even if it is cheap one and on belt driven bike ratio little bit low on 2:1(crank:wheel cogs). This is bright example of "better not sportier". Hope Your wrists be good with that!
Yeah I think a lot of it is down to what people 'think' looks good rather than what works good. I love the sound of your bike you made I bet its a blast. Not sure if you have seen any other videos on my channel but we have folding bikes to and people might think they look a bit weird but boy are they great fun to ride and very confutable . My writs are great now thanks for asking and the Ganglion (Lump) has not returned 😁
I changed mine out too, to a high-rise handlebar and cut each side down 1.5 inches. We're all not competing in competition, especially at an older age, comfort is paramount. I watched both videos and enjoyed them!
Yes you are exactly right. Comfort is paramount because if you aren't confutable you wont go out on your bike so that would be daft. Thank you for watching the videos and the comments its much appreciated 🙂
I just saw this. Straight bars are ok for short trail runs but I switched to swept back as well. It makes a huge difference. I ride trekking trail style and for hours since I have a XC e-bike. I still get numb hands but maybe after an hour versus 15 minutes before the change. Good job. No one thinking it's not cool because so many of us struggle with issues using straight bars.
Yes totally agree the straight bars do have their uses and for anyone doing short runs or technical work they will be great but for many of us they are just not confutable. Yes you can still get hand numbness but for me personally I can ride for hours and hours now with no problems and my ganglion cyst on my wrist has not returned yet. May be a coincidence I am not sure but its all good for now
😮 Oh no - that is awful ☹️ So did you manage to find it ? I know your computer is supposed to give you a warning if it gets disconnected but I have never tested that
Sorry should have made it clearer. You basically give it half a click so the front derailleur moves a little (trim) but not all the way as to change gear
ah nice little mashup there - did you plan it or just make it up as you go along..? I'm off to the netherlands tomorrow to see my german mate, and we'll do a bit of cycling, but we're also going to north germany (Hohenwestedt and Flensburg) for 3 nights...not sure if we're cycling up there tho, but would be fun..!
Yeah I just tried to add something different to that route down to Chester-le-street both for a change and to add a few miles on. Netherlands and Germany that sounds like great fun. We went to Hamburg many years ago on our honeymoon. Really nice place and the curry sausage (can remember name) was lovely
It's ridiculous that 95% of even the cheapest mountain bikes that you can't even ride on the roughest trails have those insanely wide handlebars, which are just killing your wrists for no reason. The same goes for gravel bike handlebars. Majority of people will ride them only on double tracks and roads. Again there's no need for a wide handlebar then. If you are however one of the few that needs a wider handlebar after buying the bike, you can easily buy one.
Yeah I agree I think its the manufacturers just following trend rather than what the public actually wants. Swapping my handlebars was the best thing I did for my bike but of course some people will not agree and prefer the really wide ones.
As an owner of a now much former and weighing much less than my Top Brompton, a 9 kilo 2019 Superlight, with mudguards, as a "Rainy Dane", I also have the official Tool-set for its frame, with two metal tyre levers included, at least the one also for use as a tool! But maybe "Tyre Glider" could get it integrated in the tool-set also, for less weight and also being a British Brand? You may need to mend a puncture, so it is nice to be able to bring it while riding, and not just having it at home? Finn. Denmark
@@JohnonaBike I did find a Danish Bike Importer who had them for distribution, but as they most likely had to buy a number, I ran a risk that the one I got was the old version (blue?), from the former material, which has been claimed to be made better in the new versions, with a larger rim size notch. So not to be handicapped from that, I ordered a Glider from the UK, in spite of all the problems you have just made for yourself, leaving the EU. And I did just get it without any fuzz in a package. Finn. Denmark
Yes the Varia is a brilliant bit of kit but also expensive so I wouldn't like to loose it. The mount that comes with the Varia might never fail but the cable tie is just that little extra bit of security
As a Dane and an owner of a top Superlight Brompton, from 2019, I have never had a puncture on mine (In Denmark we have "polished gravel" on our passes!), but I imagined I would buy one at a time. And after I have seen films mentioning a new and stronger version, I tried to find one in Denmark but couldn't find an Importer able to sell one, so I ended up buying one from now cut off UK. and being sure that mine was the new version and not some left over sample from years back! It has just arrived and I do hope to never have to use it, but now it is here, at least! Finn. Denmark
Hello and welcome and thank you for taking the time to watch the video and to comment. I am surprised the Tyre Glider is not available in Denmark as that would be a great market for the company. But at least you have one now and yes I certainly hope you never need to use it. I actually used one on my road bike for the first time just the other day after over 4 years of no punctures (had loads on the mountain bike) but the tyre glider worked well although I did not need it to put the tyre back on as I could get it back on with my fingers
@@JohnonaBike I think I found a Major Importer, but as I wouldn't be sure which Version I would buy then ( I Didn't know about the change of colour), I found it more safe to buy directly from its Source! But I have found a comparizon between two similar type Products here (Adi's Little Shedshop), and he finds the T.G. the best version during a practical tests on his wheels! And I think he uses a blue version? Finn
I am not sure about the blue version I think it might just be different marketing but just works the same. When I asked the owner of Tyre Glider about the 'new' version he said the main difference is the small gap that goes over the wheel lip is larger to fit more wheels. But I personally found it worked much better for me than the original one. The original one fitted my wheel fine but the new one just seemed to work better. I have not seen a similar tool in Aldi here in the UK ?
@@JohnonaBike Tyre Glider claims that they have - started using a stronger material with the - new version with the wider version rim-cut! And it isn't "Aldi" but the Sign for the Person making the test, which I named: "Adi's little Shedshop". You may find it here? Finn. Denmark
Yes I have seen that and I was thinking of entering as its a lovely area and looks a great route apart from the fact that its not circular. So you have to either have someone at the end to collect you or you have to pay an expensive fare to have your bike and you brought back to the start. The transfer is nearly as much as the entry 😲
