Heavy Cardboard is a podcast & RU-vid channel hosted by Edward Uhler, a board gaming hobbyist who is passionate about medium & heavy strategy games.
The focus of the channel is on live teaching, full play-throughs, and roundtable discussions of various games. There is no better way to interact with Edward and the rest of The Herd than joining one of the live-streams and being a part of The Peanut Gallery! And let’s not forget the in-depth, long-form interviews with various board game industry professionals as well.
There is also the podcast where in most episodes, Edward and a guest will feature a healthy, in-depth discussion on one medium or heavy game.
In the end, while this is Edward’s chosen profession, his goal is to share his enjoyment with viewers & listeners. So tune in, enjoy the games, and have fun! And please give us your feedback about the podcast, the live-streams, the games, and Heavy Cardboard in general! Happy gaming, y’all!
Finally got this game. Leaning the game and doing a first play with the Baron Solo rules is a brainburner. Probably made dozens of mistakes. Suddenly realizing i build Baron turbines where he had no network for some reason... or i actually energized one of HIS buildings... my brain couldn't handle it apparently xD Anyway watching this video was very helpfull in getting some things streamlined. Hope in a few games everything will go a bit smoother and i can focus more on my own game instead of learning the Baron rules!
What an excellent game and playthrough! I really tried playing it at Essen last year, but CGE only had it on one table and it was impossible to find a spot. I'm glad I watched this video - convinced me it would be a good fit for my player group. Games that are so engaging (and draining 😜) usually go down well.. I will definetely pick it up this Essen!! Aaaaaaand even better, together with Little Alchemists for my daughter!!!
Great teach! This looks like a more interwoven and flexible Tzolkin type game. Its more fiddly and more puzzly, but i didnt get Tzolkin because it felt too restrictive for me and this feels like its more open ended for sure! My only gripe now is the playtime seems way longer for this game due to the decision space. Im gonna simmer on this one! Thanks again cheers
Per pg 43 of the rulebook regarding Phase 7: Vici doesn’t receive any bonuses from events (they just try to spoil the player from benefits) so all points they gained would not have happened.
#51:00 When installing the Pyrmaid, shouldn't you also gain 3 points, since you met the active cost requirement for that card when you paid the stone? Or am I misunderstanding something about the points under the costs? Or do those trigger through some other means?
@@Heavycardboard no worries. I was making sure I just didn't misunderstand something from the iconography. Mistakes happen, especially in live playthroughs. Thanks
@1:34:24 how does the green card work regarding the level 4 requirment? You need 1 expresivness? But for level 1 you already need 2 expresivness, so for level 4 only 2 expressiveness will do?
This game looks great. But I am kinda disappointed it is the typical efficiency euro where everyone is kind of just playing next to eachother. And only having turf wars with the system. Good job on the teach, and being the game master really helps to move this along.
At 2:25:38 why wouldn’t he pay the $5 to build that third building from the left middle section.. which would unlock that $5 discount for the casino.. since he’s upgrading to a casino.. right? He paid the $5 anyways, so why not pay that to have another building and get the discount. He pays the same amount plus gets that bonus action? Or am I misunderstanding something. Lol
This does look Kanban-ish as far as game weight goes, with even more theme to help understand what's going on. Can't wait for the solo stream. Thanks Edward
You've inspired me to play this again. I've always liked this series but not played any in the last year or so. The Infantry Guns and Howitzers pretty much destroyed me. Also just played Lanzerath Ridge too, but I don't quite enjoy that one as much.
Ahh, rewatching to see what they fixed to correct the suicidal issue. The final rules everyone contributes fuel to missing fuel, and you can only go based on how much fuel entire group has. So with fixed rules they would have been forced to sea, and Edward’s 4 fuel would have covered all three ships.
@@elqord.1118only changes I found is 1) you can only take the coastal travel if you have enough fuel to cover it’s cost otherwise you have to do the sea option, and if you don’t have the one fuel per ship then it’s failure. And to even be the leader you have to have at least one explosive.
This means that the person or people leading in score need to keep an eye on how much fuel there is, they have more of an incentive to keep fueled,. I also noticed they upped the points gotten from the sled dogs by a lot.
There is also "Restart" by Teetotum Game Studios available for Demo. Their campaign is coming out on Kickstarter very soon. But I don't see it on this list, why? I think it's one of the top games right now.
I have one doubt. While playing a ambush card if it removes the warriors the battle ends. What does it mean? If the attacker has 1 warrior and 1 building. Can i remove the building or not? If yes why does it mentions battle stops after removing warriors
I played over kingdom legacy (and the 2 expansions) and the first 5-10 "rounds" were great. But it became boring pretty fast. at the end I didn't care. one expansion is 4 rounds, and then you need to buy more expansions if you want to go through the content of that first one. I hope you like it more than I did. (also, it's cheap bc it's AI art)
There is an upcoming game called Age of Automation from an independent publisher in Thailand and available for purchase at Essent. It's more closer to medium weight but it might be worth checking out since it will be a lesser known release.
Loved this! Smart commentary and great interchange with a pretty awesome community. If you can't get to Essen this year - this may be the next best way to spend a couple of hours basking in the hobby.
Eterna looks interesting.I like the colour scheme,i can't abide garish colours. Andromeda's edge,Asian Tigers,Shackleton Base,Inferno,Luthier,Men-Nefer, Saltfjord,SETI,Terminus, amongst many others. I think this could be the best year for a long time for Euro's.Last few years been rather disappointing.
Excellent teach Edward - I see you picked up on the cumulative requirement p24. Also if a farm is destroyed by a volcano it returns to the supply p21.,
@HeavyCardBoard, have been there some significant changes in the game over last years? (writing this on 2024). I see you have city location at spot no. 17. I have played it recently but there were no spot for the city there. We played 4p game and I think we followed the setup instruction very precisely and there were no info to put additional city tile there. Can anyone share any info on that?
