These are excellent issues to consider. My last home in Houston, Texas was a condominium, so of course there was a HOA. I bought a condo because I was single and traveled often internationally, sometimes being away for several weeks at a time. I chose a condo for the obvious security, but I hated the HOA. HOA meetings would last for hours with residents bickering over the most petty issues. Two times we had costly hurricane damage. One one of those occasions the damage far exceeded the million dollar insurance policy maintained by the HOA. It was amazing to find some residents would apparently rather the roof cave in than spend a dime on an assessment. I vowed never again and now live in a house. The purchase price for my house was more, but the cost of maintenance is so much less. My HOA monthly maintenance fees were almost as much as a mortgage payment! In my house I save a bundle on electricity because I installed solar panels, something impossible in a condo. And there is so much more privacy! The only HOAs I like are in residential neighborhoods with a voluntary HOA which is entirely optional.
hahaha. Hurricane Helene welcomes you to myrtle beach. Here is the price tag for the HOA that has increased. Here is next year's assessment fee. Don't let the price tag scare you... 100K. it can be paid over a period of 1 year. A sucker is born every minute. Poor Schmuck.
I feel extremely blessed to live on the Big Island in zone 8. We've had three hurricanes in 20 years that all were pushed away by Mauna Kea. Florida is on it's last leg. It's probably too late to sell. I never considered climate change when moving here, just blind good luck.
I live in Iowa everything you said sounds wonderful to me. You should’ve called the video 10 reasons why you should move to South Carolina. We have brutal, cold winters and terrible pollen in the late summer and early fall and that state looks so beautiful and the sound of the hospitality and the coastline sounds great, I think I’m gonna end up in South Carolina. Enjoy the slow pace beautiful culture thank you for the video.
Some guests choose AirBNB because they can get away with having parties and making a mess etc. You have to be very careful about approving guests. Makes the costs go up and hotels and motels are better at managing the short term renters.
I've had good experience with airbnb as guest and host. Fees are high but no need for deposit and guests are verified. You are also insured and having a third party handle the financial transaction is great... no need for deposits... yea, if hotels are cheaper then they may be better...
There are always pros and cons to every place you live. Florida is no exception. The weather is changing throughout the world, and we all have to accept the fact that there are more weather extremes than ever. No one will ever find the perfect place to live. Florida is no exception.
Florida is a pretty place to visit. You couldn't PAY me to live there. In the long term, it will disappear into the sea .. as all the world's ice continues to melt.
Jerry, FYI TripAdvisor and their other agency Flipkey have just stopped advertising small rentals! You also missed a two reasons why AirBnb, VBRO and their linked companies, Abritel and others, are losing clients: Countries are making this rental income reportable and therefore taxable. Secondly, renters look for the property on the Internet so that they can book directly and avoid any agency fees. By having my own website (made by me using a free Weebly app, offered by my hosting company) I have now 80% of my clients with no commission. This has increased our revenue as our rental prices are quite high and agents commission rates were over the top. Renting with AirBnb certainly looked like a win, win for both parties but that has now changed.
As a mechanical engineer, it took me 5 years to distance myself from stress. My biggest problem was and is, my girlfriend that can not get used to me walking around the house. And yes, I never smoked so I really started playing badminton, again, after more than 40 years. Great to be around young people again. (I still remember my colleagues laughing at me when I started eating vegan and selected food in the early 80's)
That’s amazing. People need to move to where they really want to live and stop making excuses why not to move now. We only live once. I’m saying this because I to am ready to move to the beach.
My country does not permit airbnb rentals, and we are grateful for it. Residents do not hv to put up with noisy parties, abuse of condominium facilities and security issues. In fact, a local was convicted in court for renting out 14 properties illegally for short term rentals n fined USD$860,000. His accomplice was also fined USD62,000. Airbnb should be banned totally.
I own a unit in a 55 +. I think it’s great. Everybody is nice. They don’t “get in your business “and just exchange pleasantries. If you want to make friends it’s easy enough or limit your circle. HOA fees are there to pay bills like water, grounds maintenance, pool maintenance, trash and sewer. It depends on the complex. Also a big one is part of the HOA fee goes into a general fund and escrow for a roof etc. Some HOA fees can be pricey, mine is very reasonable and well managed. One more point about 55+ is you don’t have 20 year olds drinking and partying at the pool at 3 in the morning or hanging out in the parking areas. Very pleasant.
I became dismayed by ABNB’s lack of quality control. I cancelled a couple of bookings after seeing the deplorable condition of the property in person. Crappy uncomfortable furniture, maybe one nice room. There’s some real scammers out there. And there’s little or no recourse for the renter. I frequently rent short term, but for me “short term” is usually at least a month.
FL is the only state I've lived in where people bring up politics at work regularly. You can mention a game or concert and people will bring up politics. Most people just sit and watch tv all day. It's an unbelievably lazy state.
