Why on earth does anyone use that montrosity, the Nalgene bottle ? Get a taller bottle if you need to drink that much. Fat bottles are just landfill-ready.
@@Ilikeitlikethis I personally only use one for the dogs water these days. But if I don’t test with one, I always get asked if a bag will fit one. But if it fits a Nalgene, it fits everything else.
youre not crazy. the s2 design straps are ruined. like i LITERALLY rock my axiom18 still in between just due to this. the way the straps were inserted on their previous packs were SSOOOOOOOOOOOO much better. literally almost to the point of just opting for the 24 or 18version. im so glad that all their other packs are still using the old way, so only the s2 is ruined, not the whole company😅. i debate selling my canvas and ultra versions due to this, you would think i would never look at my dusty vx21 version axiom18 with these bags, but nope, i often go back to it just due to the comfort of the bag. its sad, but what can we do.
@@PanaMaJwaaRd while I’ve always wanted an axiom 24,I’ve never pulled the trigger on one. So I can’t compare to any other TAD packs (yet. I’ll be using a scout starting tomorrow). I wouldn’t say the harness was uncomfortable, but noticeably wide. But with a little adjustment I found it to be comfortable on me. Here’s a big BUT… I am pretty broad chested. So a wider harness dialed in works well for me. I. Am see it not working so well on those who didn’t inherit board chestednesss from their grandfather.
I also can get it to feel comfortable, also broad so maybe thats a thing. I dont want others to take away that its "uncomfortable". Its not. It does feel wide and at times feels like it wants to start sloping down side of shoulder *** that wide of a feeling**, but its comfortable. I just swapped into my ultra one and the weight savings helped a ton. Then i put from my ultra into vx21 axiom 18, and again, more weight shaved off + how the straps are inserted, its like aa..... "Ahhhhhhg" feeling. A relief. The straps are inserted better and narrower. Such lightweight bag plus it just sitting right in that crevace where you want it. If you havent tried an 18 or 24 i highly recommend it, you get crazy weight savings + comfort with mostly same feature package. Also, the scout has a staight strap to it, its not a big deal because you cant load it heavy enough to notice it, but the litespeed and edc curved straps are "chef kiss". I love using my scout and litespeed as well though, both equally. At this point i have the canvas and ultra as collecting lol. But spectre22, axis duffle(easily beat duffle out, sad not in stock forever), meridian for travel, all their gear is comfortable and lightweight and weather sealing. Everything up until the s2 is just perfection from tad. @@jeffgrantMEDIA
@@PanaMaJwaaRd I chefs kiss….. now I REALLY need to try a litespeed! Thats actually the bag I requested and they were going to send. But were sold out before they could process the order. Hence my mystery TAD unboxing video.
Thanks for the review, just a bit of constructive criticism, your viewers time is important and you repeat things way too often imho, this video could have easily been half the length of you had a more structured approach. Just my 2c Also in both your videos about the bag, you didn't test fill it to 40L... Which is what a lot of viewers want to see from an expandable bag.
There are chapters so viewers can quickly jump to whatever information they are looking for. That includes a chapter in this video to 13:22 where I in fact pack the bag out for travel.
@@jeffgrantMEDIAYes I saw that part before commenting, it's not packed to 40L with the kangaroo pouch and shown/tested on your person is what I meant. Been hard to find end users wearing it full to see what it looks like No biggy 👍
@@WeiFinder As I say in this video, and I was clear with Tropic Feel before they sent me the bag, I did not have any travel plans scheduled. I packed how I would for 1 week of travel. I wasn't going to pack up more than I need to just to fill out my bag. This is a realistic travel load out for me, and probably a lot for many one bag travels. Typically people will leave room in their bag for anything they purchase while traveling, and for the larger separation of clean and dirty clothing for the return journey or as you continue your travels over a longer period of time.
I'll check your channel for an update on this, I was happy to see your review but disappointed you didn't test fill the bag for almost 25 minutes worth of video
check my other reply. The full review shows the bag loaded for travel at the 13:22 mark. Use the chapters to jump around to the information you are most interested in.
If the ground is wet enought that water is going to seep past the webbing on the bottom and up through a 1/8in thick grommet, you're setting your bag in a puddle and the water is going to quickly soak through the bottom of a bag without gromits. If the ground is simply damp, it will saturate the bottom of the bag eventually but the water will not magically leap through the gromits.
If you are setting a bag down in a puddle in an EDC environment, you have some issues you need to work on. Have you ever used a 500D bag? They are pretty water resistant. So setting it down for a period of time on damp or wet ground/surfaces is not going to "seep" through. This scenario is more for a day pack or a trail/city set up. You don't always know of the ground is dry. Setting a bag down with an open hole will in fact allow the countenance to get wet. If you leave it there long enough and the ground surface is wet enough, yes eventually the cordura will wet out and water will get inside. But again if that happens, you probably have some other issues to work on.
These look awesome! I've switched almost fully to barefoot shoes because I love the width / more minimal soles but I can't help but miss easy slip-on shoes. Would you recommend this for someone who likes shoes like Lems?
I love my Lems. I got them as hikers, but now wear them all the time (well when it is below 80). I wouldn't say these are "barefoot" shoes, but if you like Lems, you will like these. They don't have quite as much room in the toe box as my Lems Boulders, but they feel great. This would be because they are a clog-style shoes, and if there was not some taper they would not stay on your foot. So there needs to be a bit slimmer toe box.
@@robertrodriguez1557 thanks! After a few days of wear, it really soften up and down more fades are popping a bit more. Things going to look good in another 10.5 months.
Planning on ordering one here . I live in California and like lightweight jacket . Do the difference 21oz , 16, 14 really make a huge difference ? Whqt would be your major difference in a nutshell when it comes to the OZ ? Thank you been watching all your videos today lol
@@lildyl3463 the OZ do make a difference, but so does the material. This version of the gauntlet is more like 23oz than the last batch that was 21oz. But I have the golden handshake (14oz) the uppercut jeans (16.5oz) and the gauntlet (23oz). I did have the uppercut jacket, Brave Star sent me a gauntlet and uppercut to check out for a rally jacket. And I and my daughter both chose the gauntlet because it was a lot softer than the lighter weight uppercut. I would rank them in order as far as comfort: Golden Handshake, Gauntlet, Uppercut. The materials also play a factor in addition to the weight of the fabric. The gauntlet is a heavier weight, but much softer and easier to break in. I also have an Iron Heart jacket that is 14oz, but feels MUCH heavier than my 14oz Golden Handshake and my 16.5 oz Uppercut. If you’re near Culver City, swing into the Brave Star brick and mortar and check them out. I do recommend the gauntlet. It’s a great all around jacket and this thing will last me years! Even once the weather cools off in the fall and I start doing some projects in it.
@@jeffgrantMEDIA it’s funny I watched another one of your videos about going down rabbit hole researching before a buy and I’m always doing that my wife makes fun of me lol . Thanks again might try the herringbone in the pants , need something unique and that’s got a unique pattern it seems , u have any info on herringbone material
@@lildyl3463 in don’t currently have any wabash clothing. I think I am going to pick up a pair of the Brave Star double knee pants this fall. I’m trying to really beat the tar out of my uppercuts now. But if they make a vest…. I am all over that!
Hi, I live in LA, about 5 miles away from Brave Star. July 3, 2024 I bought (my first selvedge ever!) a pair of True Straight, Gauntlet Heavyweight 21.5oz jeans and an Ironside 21.5oz jacket. Something about the left-hand weave makes these softer and easier than the right-hand weave 16oz denim. I don’t know why. Call and ask them. While hot soaking both, one of the rivets popped off the jeans. They took most of July 4th to dry out, even with the current heatwave. I have still been wearing both off and on for the last week (only at night) since the seams are still strongly stitched together. Today (July 9th) I drove over there and they replaced the rivet (5 minute job). While there I bought a black version of the jeans. I forget what they are called (Mayhem?) since I had to leave them there to be hemmed. With the heat wave it’s not an emergency. Honestly it’s insane. The last thing I need in a heatwave is a pair of black, heavyweight 21.5oz jeans! I’ll pick up next week or so. While there I also checked out the other jackets. To your question, there is a HUGE difference between the oz weights denims. If you live up north where your normal summer weather might be around the 80s, 21oz will be fine. Here in LA it’s way too thick and hot except on cooler nights right now. I also have some Samurai 15oz jeans and they are just tolerable if not standing in direct summer sun. Brand new they are still floppy and will not support their own weight. 21.5oz Brave Stars will stand up by themselves when new. It really is like putting on armor or a suit made of heavy paper. Very stiff. Buttons almost impossible to button at first. After about 5 times of wearing them, the buttons start getting a lot easier to manipulate and the fabric starts to get more pliable. Or maybe my hands are just getting stronger? That’s where I’m at right now. I love them and know it’s only going to get better. That’s why I knew it was okay to get the second pair in black. I hope that helps. Take care.
I agree! That is the reason I never picked up a Heritage GR1. The black 26L is currently on sale for"X-Mas in July" for only $299.... and I really considered it seeing as it is normally $425. But summer trips require capital! But I digress, GR has cranked their prices while lowering their QC standards. But when you get a good bag, it's a lifer. I have beat the hell out of several of them, including a sandbag, and they still fetch a high price on the second-hand market. So even a used, these bags are pricey, but still about on par with other high-end bags. I have spent $300-$400 on other bags from other brands in the past.
@@jeffgrantMEDIA I mean I don't doubt they are tough (they better be!) but do I really beat up a simple backpack that much? These aren't large enough for a backpacking trip and they lack a real frame so I wouldn't load it up with much weight. Just, $500 is absolutely insane. Then again they are still in business so enough people can justify the price. I wanted to get back in to rucking so I looked at them. They just seem a little cultish to me. But hey, in the end I don't judge someone for getting one.
@@adamkreuz9068 There is CERTAINLY a cult following to GR unlike another bag brand out there. I would say they are the Apple of the backpack world. Something new comes out, and they buy it. I personally love the simplicity of the bags (except the Rucker 4.0. That took away all the simple, yet usefully parts of the 3.0). You can probably snag a Rucker 3.0 for a fair price, or do the eBay game. Deals can be found, but they take time.
Nothing to do with the Front Pocket backpack BUT I just received the Saddleback Adolescent Beast(chestnut) and it is a beauty!!! At some point I will get the backpack when my other backpacks break.
Hey Jeff have you done any reviews on the denim jackets from Ginew. I was online looking for a light weight type II. Trucker jacket and purchased one from them called the Nizhoo jacket made from deadstock denim. It’s a relatively new release but they have other styles . Just wondering if you’ve done a review of any of their products or heard of the brand .
This video went live September 8, 2017 and the unboxing May 26, 2017. So this jacket was from early 2017. Still have it in the gear closet of you are interested. It’s just been chilling for a few years now.
@@gmmk815 while I have no doubts this bag will withstand anything an urban environment can trow at it, it will not hold up to any military (or military like) use. These are consumer grade materials. That said, I still love and use this bag. And wish the drainage hole was not there and straps were not quick release. They are bulky and you can feel them rub the inside of the arm.
@@readyme it is pretty thin. You are correct it is more like a veneer to top off the EVA foam. I did find it very comfortable to wear at the shore though. I pint it n side by side with my wife’s Birk’s and you can clearly see it is just a topper.
That is a nice jacket. Looks good on you - not too loose, not too tight so you can potentially get a layer underneath. Unstructured or semi structured is the way to go for blazers imho!
Thank you. I have worn it with linen or lighter short sleeve shirts. But I certainly have enough room for heavier shirts in the winter months or potentially a sweater. I am very happy with the fit and look of this. It is a really great piece to fit into a lot of occasions.
Greenroom 136 is one of my favorite bag brands. I've got an entire playlist of videos about GR136 - ru-vid.com/group/PLqP9sazDwCPuFwMHTikVnERsRZ-Uqx1O1
These look great. Would you be able to let me know the circumference around the shaft? I have Justin roper but the shaft is kind of wide which really limits which pants I can wear them with.
I’ve never had a pair of Justin boots so I cannot say for certain. But roper style boots tend to have a narrower shaft, so you may be ok. I would personally go with the straight left to be certain. The straight leg are not over all too much loser, but they do fit much better over my HH Wellingtons.
Ohh thank you for the review- where were you a few months ago when I was trying to get a size scale comparison -lol. I got this exact bag (size, model, color) and I love it. Really nice review- I am now a subscriber! Cheers from St. Pete Fl.
thanks for watching and subscribing! A few months ago I was probably getting as many jackets reviews in as possible since I will be wearing the same jacket nearly every day for a year now (11 months left!)! haha. The Redline Rally is in full swing! But I still have to come back to one of my main loves.....bags!
Just received an Ultra Axiom, first TAD pack for me as well and I’m a BIG fan. One of the best fitting harnesses I’ve ever used, crazy sleek & great org.
i think the older versions are WAY more comfortable. the new s2 straps tend to pull out and away, the older ones just were stiched narrower and fit better imo. I still carry both s2s, but just my experience.
@@PanaMaJwaaRd I did notice on day 2 that the harness seemed a bit wide. Playing with the load lifters helped to pull it in and lay much better. I am pretty broad chested, so it worked pretty good for me. But for some one not as broad chested as I, will have to play around a bit more and hopefully get the straps to be more comfortable for themselves. But over all I am really liking the bag, and it’s very comfortable for me.
Awful company with third-rate quality goods and non-existent customer service. They use cheap, defective components for their gear and won't honor their Repair or Replace Guarantee, which constitutes fraud. Do yourself a favor and read the reviews about their terrible quality and zero customer service, and go with a reputable company with higher quality goods.
That was not my experience at all. The customer service was great for me. I originally emailed them to confirm a jacket I bought on eBay was legit. They got back to me within a day and then answered all my questions about the jacket I bought featured in this video. I found the materials and build quality to be great and on par with the price point. I did not need to deal with a warranty claim, as the only thing that needed repair, I was more than capable of fixing on my own within 10 minutes.
Haha. No. They agreed to send me a sample for review, but where then out of the fast pack light speed. So they said they would be getting a restock in soon if a few things, would I like to wait. I said sure, but I wasn’t sure what they were restocking and going to send me out. So it was a surprise to me what I was being sent for review. Currently using the Axiom and loving it.
Just some track from the RU-vid music library. Normally it show the track name and artist in the description. But I’m not seeing it now, either because I’m on mobile or they don’t show on shorts.
I suppose for that thick tubing you might be able to pass the 8Timber hook around the tube and through its own shock cord, like a bight, if it's long enough.
What thick tubing are you referring to? I filmed this 2 years ago, so I don't remember off hand all the tests I did, and a quick scrub sees nothing thick beside the angled wood hang.
I enjoyed your very fair review. As a life-long New Englander, I'm a big fan of Boston Scally Company. I know you mentioned a few times about them not having pictures of the caps actually being worn. Whether it's because of your advice or not, they've added a part on the customer review section where they ask for customers to attach photos of them in their caps. It's kind of a clever and organic way to get their customers involved while also eliminating the cost of hiring models and photo shoots.
@@jeffgrantMEDIA Unless they made a change recently, their bags have always been made in Mexico. They even have videos of the factory on their site. They are still excellent products.
@@greyarealove I stand corrected. You are right, they are made in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico. I asked in the email, but they never responded to that question. The bag shipped from Texas, and they have a Texas showroom. I must have assumed they were Texas made. But we know what happens when you assume something..... But after sending out the video, they did not mention my error.
I can only assume that the rigidity of the back of the backpack was to protect the tech you decide to carry with you. I guess they went for protection over comfort on that note.
They can put all the protection they want in the bag. If it’s not comfortable to carry, it’s useless. Also, it’s been so long since I carried this bag, I don’t remember much about it off hand, besides I was not happy with it.
