Looks like you can paddle up fairly quickly on the Ha880. How much do you weigh? I'm looking to buy the same board and weigh 80kgs. Do you like the v2 board better than the v1? Thanks!
Hey, I just tried sup foiling on flatwater with the 115l version of the Duotone Downwinder and the Fanatic high aero aspect 2000 wing for the first time, but after a couple strokes the board immediately turns and doesn’t go straight. I have a 75cm mast, so it’s quite confusing. Any tips?
Sorry I missed this comment. Hope not too late to reply. If you cannot keep a board straight it is due to your paddle technique. You have to learn good sup paddling technique first before even thinking of flat water paddling up a foil. Have a google and look up paddling a sup straight with J stroke technique :)
How critical do you think board width is in terms of popping up in flatwater or out in the bumps? You're obviously trading a bit of stability for less width but would you say it's one of the more important gear variables from your experience? For example, I have an 8'2" x 21" 120L KT dragonfly and can popup in decent bumps but have a really hard time getting the board moving quickly through the water and bouncing in flatwater.
I think every variable counts to helping obviously, but there is definitely a pay off. Going narrower will help for sure but will also decrease stability. You can increase stability by increasing length and volume :)
I have 1700cm2 ar7.2 and am still strugling to get it going from the flats. I hope that If i get the technique right i eventually will. I just have to Watch your videos morę ;)
Great paddle up video. From your point of view: Is it easier to paddle up a board with smaller volume? Do you need to create more speed just with paddling before you start with the ollies to prevent the nose from sticking in the water when slapping down the front?
Definitely easier to paddle up bigger board from the start (less strokes) as you don't need to get it on the water surface first. But once up the smaller board much nicer to pump and turn
I weigh 198lbs/90KG just got a 107 L armstrong dw board mainly for lightwind.. but want to try flat water standup with no experience in that.. intermediate experience winging. I have a 1750 MA and 220 glide and 85cm mast. I have found the 107 to probably be too small for me, but i see you make it work. What i do have is determination and fit for 56 yrs old. How big of a difference would 1880 APF make in this journey? 72cm Mast? I am pretty sure more flotation would help a lot. Waiting for it to warm up just a bit.. 9 degrees F this morning in alaska. DO you think i should make the somewhat costly investment in the APF? Seems like it overlaps a bit with 1750 MA.
Hey! Definitely no overlap with the 1880apf. The 1880 has extreme low end and slow speed easy pumping. The ma1750 is harder to pop up and better top end, designed for light wind winging . Whereas rbe 1880 for dockstarts/flat water pumping!
Hi Mick! I'm considering the 7.2 for the same use, I'm 83kg and intermediate winger using sinker.Do you think it's a good choice, your video make me say yes 😅. The first Time I try the 7.2 it was obviously not easy at all to stand up more than 10s...
Looks fun. Was initially shopping for a 4'4 ish prone foil board but getting a 6'3 armstrong for surf foiling and sup surf foiling seems like it could be quite the quiver killer.
So smooth, great work! I have an 85A+ mast with the HA1525 wing and considering upgrading to the PM725 or 795. My main use would be dockstarting, but occasionally wing foiling and DW on lakes. Do you reckon the PM725 is sufficient, or better go longer? Thanks a lot!
Hi, sorry only saw this now ! 795pm is great if you want to surf/wing as well as dock start when you want more height for turns to be able to lean over more. more forgiveness for breaching in a straight line too :)
Thx mate, you confirmed my choice! Just purchased a 2nd hand 795, so far only dock starting and riding micro bumps on the lake, but it is certainly a step up from the v2 in terms of glide and stiffness. Easier to control the wide span foils...@@Mickfoil1
Wow! 925 is very difficult to paddle up. I know, because I am 0 for 500 with it. :) Can do the 1125. Might try the 220 tail. Been using 195. U made it look easy. Great, concise video. :)
You're a boss! I can't figure it out how it's possible pumping the 925 Could you give me an advice mick, weight 183lbs, the Armstrong 107l is a good choice for downwind and surf small shore waves? I tried it one week ago and I felt it very unstable even on flat conditions, I was just able to pronesurf ...
Hey..yeh SUP stability depends on your sup experience /skill level. If you are finding it hard to be stable on that board I will go one size up to the 121L! When you get better you can go down in size. Keep practicing and you will get better. The Armstrong dw boards are great for all found use for dw, small surf and winging !
You like that 220 glide tail with the 925? I'm still running the HA195 tail (which is my fav) and recently demoed the 180 which I thought would feel faster, but somehow felt draggier. I thought the HA195 was specifically tuned for the HA front wings so just being curious as to what your experience has been trialing different tails. Good job on the flat water pump up! I'm nowhere close that yet!
Hey! 220 I only use to increase bottom end if needed. Mostly use the 180 and I love it much more than the 195. Much better bottom end and pitch stability at speed. You can shim it flatter if you want it to be a bit looser and less drag
