The greatest mistake Nigeria and most African countries ever made was independence in 1960s. Where were the human resources to drive the developmental needs? How many teachers? How many graduates? What was the literacy level? Contrast this with South Africa that waited over 30 years after the bandwagon to get indeoence. You want to know why Africa is in mess, check this out!
Nigeria, especially the Western Region , had the required manpower to run a modern and progressive nation even as at 1960. Yes , the North was not yet ready but the South as a whole was. Independence could have been granted first to Southerners that have proved themselves while the North could join the rest of the country later, probably after about 20years. Alternatively, independence could wait for the whole Country till 1980 thus giving the South ample time to consolidate. Again Awo shouldn't have contested in 1959. It was a political miscalculation from which the South has not recovered even now in 2022.

@@oriowoayodeji8978 If you do a bit of research, 8th August 1957 the Western and Eastern region were allowed to govern themselves ( You could say they were partially independent if you like) but the North was still governed by the British. Independence was first proposed in 1953, but in 1956 the Northerners voted against it when the matter was brought up again because the Northerners were not ready at that time. Reason, they couldn't even boast of one graduate when the Western and Eastern region had a lot of them.
