Jeffrey, I was a 13 to 17 year old surfer who had base access because of my Dad who was on Nixon's NSA operating in Saigon. We lived just outside the base in Aikahi Park, and my buddies and I would surf a place on the base we named, " Boulders ". Boulders was located at the end of the runway. The surf would be incredible but what was more incredible to us is we'd be out in the water, and the F-4 Phantoms would take off, and lift from the runway right above us! I'll never forget surfing there, and experiencing that. Stupid? You bet, we were quite immortal back then, lol. I was all over that base. I remember the entrance gate was on the other side of where it is today. On Mokapu Blvd. We'd surf inside the gates well over to the right at a place we called Zombies that the MP's would always chase us out of the water. We'd paddle away back to public property. It was crazy. We'd surf North Beach of course and also along the oceanfront golf course at the 14th Hole not to far away from Boulders where the runways were. It was a crazy period,my Dad stayed gone a long time. Until the war ended, April 30th, 1975. KMCAS certainly had some of the most beautiful beaches of anywhere on the island. Anyways, thank you for your service, and aloha to you, C A Saunders

Interesting wee edit there when he's talking about what the first invaders found. An empty wilderness? Aye, right. Aside from the 20 million or so people who already lived there. The American dream was built on genocide and grew through slavery and oppression. Wayne was like the nobility of the old countries the religious nutters, criminals and scoundrels were kicked out of. "Duke" indeed. Where I come from that's still a swear word.
@periurban

@Fred Wright The clovis people lived thousands of years ago, and were probably wiped out by a comet! The American genocide started just a couple of hundred years ago, and it's still going on today! The Duck is laying claim to exceptionalism in the modern world, ignoring the facts. He says they found a wilderness. They didn't. He says they triumphed, forgetting HOW they triumphed, the millions that were lost to the new dream, who died in the cold and the heat he dismisses so easily. He's not a libertarian, he's a reactionary conservative who wants to shoot anyone who doesn't agree with him, especially if they look or sound different. And there's still that interesting wee edit to deal with. I wonder what he said in that missing space, about what they found when they arrived. It wouldn't be a racist statement about the people who were there first, would it?

This was a scene from a movie and John Wayne was an actor. Neither of which make Wayne's character's diatribe in this scene true or factual. The colonist that came the America found it populated with millions of native peoples. But, the European diseases those colonist brought with them destroyed the existing civilizations. War and gunpowder did the rest.
@johnwilloughby4841
@johnwilloughby4841 3 года назад
Your comments oversimplify and overlook the fact that actors of the Mid-Twentieth Century, much more than modern day entertainers that are influenced by political correctness and are immersed in woke culture, chose roles that almost exclusively reflected their political and social values. More famous Conservative Actors like John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart et al, rarely accepted roles (or even worked with black-listed writers, directors, or producers) that did not reflect their personal values or political philosophies. Some extremely Liberal Actors such as Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, James Garner, etc. would accept roles that did not reflect their political philosophies, but only if they cast a blatantly negative shadow on traditionally conservative norms. Your observation that the comments John Wayne's character played are neither true or factual, just by virtue of the fact that America grew to what it is today, simply doesn't hold water. With regards to your comment about foreign diseases destroying existing civilizations, your observation holds some merit. But you have overlooked the anthropological fact that native peoples in both North and South America and Oceania (including Hawaii) were extremely susceptible to physical and mental complications that were a result of commonly practiced incestuous relationships. The diseases brought by foreigners that you mentioned, only wreaked further havoc with the extremely weak immune systems caused by inbreeding. But it cannot be denied that the practice of incest not only made these civilizations susceptible to diseases as you mentioned, but it also stunted their intellectual, scientific, and social development which caused these civilizations to stagnate long before Europeans arrived.
@valkyriefrost5301
@valkyriefrost5301 3 года назад
@@johnwilloughby4841 - Wayne, like most all actors of that period were under contract to the studios, not free agents. They did not have much "choice" in the roles they played. Also, scripts back they were heavily scrutinized for political correctness of the era. Even MASH (1971) was portrayed in the Korean Conflict even though it was criticizing the Vietnam Conflict. I do not base my water on how things have come today but on what happened in history. In that scene, Wayne portrays the America's as a wilderness free to anyone who came. It completely ignores (as much of taught US history does) the indigenous peoples that were pushed out of those lands. And you go on to call those people incestuous, with weak immune systems. That is simply your ignorance showing. The America's were populated with Millions of indigenous peoples. They were not technologically evolved because they did not spend 3000 years at constant war with each other. Unlike Europeans, they were more in harmony with the land and each other. Do not take that as they were all tree huggers and flower children. They had their differences and their wars, but they never sought the need to kill each other better than what they already knew. They did not build big, overcrowded cities where people lived in close proximity to domesticated animals for centuries (thus the disease issue). They did not enslave entire populations. Even the Chinese did not take gunpowder and invent the gun or giant bombs; they used it (mostly) for fireworks. The Spanish Flu of 1918 devastated both the US and Europe. Yet, by your logic, those people should have had strong immune systems and been totally unaffected by such trivial disease. You really just do not seem to understand disease, immunity, or exposure. Let me give you an exercise in both US history and "weak" immune systems. Read this link on the American Chestnut: www.mountainhomemag.com/2014/06/04/186741/the-fall-of-the-american-chestnut Like the tree, the indigenous peoples had zero exposure to foreign disease and thus, zero immunity. Millions and millions died in European cities over the course of centuries from those diseases and only those that were immune survived and later made in to the new world, bringing those microscopic invaders with them. In short, having a diverse gene pool has Zero impact on resisting/surviving a virulent pathogen.
