Hello and welcome to The Flying Workbench. My name is Nicolas, I live in France. My main interest is to collect old scientific and technical objects from the 19th and early 20th century, as well as military aviation objects. On my channel, you will see the restoration of this type of objects, but also of old tools and toys. I am not a professional, I learned everything by myself. I hope you enjoy and stay tuned for more content.
💯 truly outstanding original custom-made metal Wood laith that is the best original authentic working display for a desk of any kind. Truly remarkable thank you!
I would have converted it into an LED light (shaped like a candle flame). Safer and you wouldn't had to change almost anything. Where the candle base with the spring is could been the battery and the electrical parts, and have a flame shaped LED pocking out. You could even make a faux flame out of resin and a mold. You can even make a mold to make the resin flame. When I saw you were making the Plexiglas lens I thought you surely aren't going to put a candle in there.
Very nice display model, almost too pretty to use. Looks like an old sewing machine motor would be a good fit to power this with. The speed could be controlled by the foot pedal. Thanks for sharing and good luck with your channel. 😊👍👏🤝
Top notch content. Can't subscribe again, but would if I could. Keep this kind of content coming and you'll have 10.000 subscribers by this time next year.
#### TIME HAS RUN OUT !! John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Don't ignore this message !! REPENT NOW !! God the Son - JESUS came in the flesh to die for sinners. TRUST that God raised JESUS from the dead !! By FAITH accept JESUS's blood alone as payment for your sins unto Salvation, to escape what's about to happen !! Don't say you were not warned !! ONLY true believers in JESUS will be suddenly taken. THEN comes 7 horrific years of God's JUDGEMENT, poured out on the world. I pray that the LORD will open your eyes and heart to the GOSPEL.
Oh well ... I was kinda hoping you'd polish the main housing and a couple other parts to brass plate them. A few of the parts - candle holder, exhaust box, lense holders, etc, would have looked good nickel plated with the brass. The circa 1900 to 1910 period WAS the "Brass Era" for car lights, hinges, door knobs, hub caps, etc. Steel didn't become common untlthe mid/late teen and early 20's. Some of the bcycle accessories of the same period were also brass. Shame there wasn't a way to nickel or chrome plate the inside of the housing. The light would be much brighter ... tho still exceptionally dim by today's standards. Of course a bicycle headlight in the 19 aughts wasn't for the rider to see where he or she was going. It was so people on/in the horse carts/wagons, horse back, and very few cars could see them coming. At least you didn't pain it (boring) black, which seems to be so common with "restorers". 👍 Even wen the original paint was say a blue, they automatically paint it black. 👎 So sad. There WERE other colors besides black used throughout history ...
Thanks for your comment, I agree with you, they are always restored in black, so I wanted to try something different. Some like it, some don't... that's life. If I were to restore this lantern again, I would probably try nickel plating the glass holder, or at least polishing it, it would have looked nicer.
Quite ingenious with your spray painting booth ~ looks like you had put a cooker hood on its side and using it as a filter fan, attached to the rear of the box [recognised the filter holder grill and light strip diffuser
That light was in remarkable shape! Usually things like this are so beat up that it hurts my head just thinking about how to restore it. At least at my skill level. 😂
Nice restoration. However, when I had one of these many years ago the reflector was nickel plated, as was the vented top section and the round opening frame at the front. The rest of it was black painted.
i know the batteries that were designed for this device to test it aren´t produced anymore but i´m sure you can still test with 6v gel battery from emergency ligths that are closest to it even if you havent added a test, your restoration quality is one of the finest i see here so every minute worth it
I was using one in the 1960`s on tar top batteries. Most batteries were 6 volt, or 8 volt, you tested the cells not the whole battery by pushing probes through the tar or across the the individual cells at connector straps, reason for tar was to prevent corrosion. Yes you are load testing but it's only 2 volts, how long it stayed at 2 volts on the gauge was to show how strong a cell was, if it drops off quick or has nothing it's a bad cell. Not something you can do on a modern battery.
Good job. Although, I wouldn't call it a "restoration". To be a restoration, it needs to be exactly as it was when new - not a different color, not different materials. I'd call it an "antique bicycle lamp revival and improvements."
