In this video, I take care of an old Louxor Supra bicycle lantern made in France around 1905.
I've done a lot of work on it, don't miss the build of a custom base at the end.
Enjoy the video.

Thanks.

I hope that plexiglass lens doesn't melt or get discoloured from the heat of the candle. Should have kept the original glass, regardless of the scratches on it.

Wow, that came out beautiful. Incredible restoration on something I've never seen before. I love it. ~Kevin

The stand is a nice touch. Restoration achieved, but not completely sold with the plexiglass replacement. The scratches on the original glass could have been polished to a better condition. Apart from that very good. 👍

Holy crap, Batman! That is amazing. The display stand was epically genius. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of your videos.

That light was in remarkable shape! Usually things like this are so beat up that it hurts my head just thinking about how to restore it. At least at my skill level. 😂

Why did you paint this white, when it was originally black as were most all items of the time especially the bicycles of the time. Surprised that the lens wasn't beveled in some way to focus the light. Nice display stand and thanks for sharing. 😅

I would have converted it into an LED light (shaped like a candle flame). Safer and you wouldn't had to change almost anything. Where the candle base with the spring is could been the battery and the electrical parts, and have a flame shaped LED pocking out. You could even make a faux flame out of resin and a mold. You can even make a mold to make the resin flame. When I saw you were making the Plexiglas lens I thought you surely aren't going to put a candle in there.

Quite ingenious with your spray painting booth ~ looks like you had put a cooker hood on its side and using it as a filter fan, attached to the rear of the box [recognised the filter holder grill and light strip diffuser

Nice restoration. However, when I had one of these many years ago the reflector was nickel plated, as was the vented top section and the round opening frame at the front. The rest of it was black painted.

Oh well ... I was kinda hoping you'd polish the main housing and a couple other parts to brass plate them. A few of the parts - candle holder, exhaust box, lense holders, etc, would have looked good nickel plated with the brass. The circa 1900 to 1910 period WAS the "Brass Era" for car lights, hinges, door knobs, hub caps, etc. Steel didn't become common untlthe mid/late teen and early 20's. Some of the bcycle accessories of the same period were also brass. Shame there wasn't a way to nickel or chrome plate the inside of the housing. The light would be much brighter ... tho still exceptionally dim by today's standards. Of course a bicycle headlight in the 19 aughts wasn't for the rider to see where he or she was going. It was so people on/in the horse carts/wagons, horse back, and very few cars could see them coming. At least you didn't pain it (boring) black, which seems to be so common with "restorers". 👍 Even wen the original paint was say a blue, they automatically paint it black. 👎 So sad. There WERE other colors besides black used throughout history ...

Thanks for your comment, I agree with you, they are always restored in black, so I wanted to try something different. Some like it, some don't... that's life. If I were to restore this lantern again, I would probably try nickel plating the glass holder, or at least polishing it, it would have looked nicer.

Will the plexiglass hold its shape under heat? The original glass could have been polished.

The real bark always falls off with time, once the wood is completely dry. At least for the pine wood I use.

Good job. Although, I wouldn't call it a "restoration". To be a restoration, it needs to be exactly as it was when new - not a different color, not different materials. I'd call it an "antique bicycle lamp revival and improvements."
