Hey! I'm Lucy and I have always had a thing for cars (hence the channel name...) Having worked for BMW for a few years after finishing college and growing up in a car loving family, they have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I currently have 2 cars - BMW 330e and I just picked up a Range Rover L322 so there are loads of videos I am excited to make! Please subscribe if you are reading this and leave me a comment as I will be replying to them all!
You physically need to go out and see these cars in the flesh, no two are the same, eventually one will have the right spec, the right smells and the right feel. That's the one. Clicking on auto trader is more of a wishful way to feed your auto addiction.
I pulled the trigger years ago on what was once my dream car... a Honda s2000. Enjoyed it for years then I did it all over again with a Nissan GTR in 2009. Enjoyed it again for years, then I finally got a 2006 987.1 Cayman S after carefully studying it and it's "issues". Overblown, but not untrue. It can certainly happen even after your borescope shows no issues. I have spent years collecting research on this and studying my own car... which is still original and still flawless at 60k miles. You are at the mercy of the hidden history of the car so its a bit like gambling. If the car passes its PPI WITH a full clean borescope and it shows that it has been DRIVEN and not a garage queen it is probably worth the risk. Most of the scoring is due to revving a garage queen when cold in combination with factory flaws and possibly leaking fuel injectors. Scoring happens because of a momentary lack of oil in a running engine. Anything that dilutes or washes away the oil at just the wrong time is always the cause. Dripping fuel is not a lubricant but it can happen because of the unique design of these engines. In my case, I replaced the injectors, coil pack, spark plugs, changed to Driven DT40 oil, changed the water pump and the air-oil separator (AOS). Your oil quality, injectors and AOS in combination with the care you take to warm the car up by DRIVING not IDLING are the best things you can do to keep a 987.1 S on the road. Never idle your car to warm it up, just get in and drive but keep the revs under 3k for about 10-15 minutes. If you have a slightly bigger budget, go for a 987.2 which was designed to eliminate these worries. You can also play it safe with a base cayman 987.1 but "safe" has never been my approach with my passions. I actually love to drive my 987.1 Cayman S just as much as my 991.2 Turbo S. This one is nowhere near the budget you are talking about but I want to stress that mid-engine manual with hydraulic steering is a feeling I will NEVER give up. Look for circa 2005 - 2009 reviews on youtube of the original Cayman. Tiff Needell on 5th Gear and the original Stig lap on Top Gear can be found on here. It was and is considered one of the best driving machines ever made. Do it and never look back. You only have your one life. Go out with a smile on your face.
First time across your channel. Glad you enjoyed the L405. I'm located in the US and have a 2012 L322 HSE Lux V8. Nice step up from the HSE (Vogue) included heated and cooled seats. Overall a nice truck. I just bought my wife a 2020 RR SV Autobiography Dynamic in a beautiful metallic blue. Has very low mileage - 22k. In the US, it comes with the V8 Supercharged petrol (higher hp then the standard V8 supercharged). We've only had it for about a week and I'm loving the interior. So much so, I'm strongly considering a RR Sport SVR for myself in the next year or two.
Don’t buy a boxster. You know in your heart of hearts that it’s not what you really want. As soon as you drive off the forecourt you’ll wish you’d paid a little bit more and got what you really want. I’ve spent all my life umming and Arring over cars and not having what I really wanted. Bite the bullet. I did. Wanted a Ranger Raptor so I bought one. No regrets.😅
Keep saving then go for the 911 997.2 or the 991 saves all the hassle ims bore scoring rms to much of a risk or buy a bmw m2 😂 nice video keep us up dated
Hi Lucy I seen your first drive of the C4S about 2 months ago when I was looking myself as a silver C4S was for sale on a street near me (yes I know I couldnt believe my luck). I paid £18k for it and it has been completely rebuilt by a specialist called Performance Porsche. it hasnt missed a beat and just brings a smile to my face every time look at it. Buy from a specialist or from an enthusiast like I did. He had a 5 Porsche collection that he was just thinning out and I got an absolute Jem. Good luck, it took me till 40 to realise my dream. Just go to the end of your vid and seen that most of those cars are the same cars that have been on the trader for about 4 months so make sure your aggressive with your negotiations. Its a buyers market!!
Had a 987 boxster, 981s boxster, and now a 996turbo. Recommend buying from a dealer. Have you tried ‘a friends green Porsche’ - usually have a good selection of the type of car you’re looking for
A good late one is £10k and a lovely place to be and drive. Any of the French/German/Chinese small to medium cars purchased new will lose £10k + in the first year and if purchased on a PCP add the extortionate finance charges onto your depreciation. No comparison and having owned one for 2 years the running costs are very reasonable providing you stay on top of maintenance. My 4.4 TDV8 averages 27mpg and 32mpg on a decent run.
I have a cayman 2.7 987.1 2007 and I just love it. I've had it 2 years now and I think its a good starting point for you to start on your porsche journey.
The air suspension compressor has a limited life and will fail. My advice is don't play with it. Same goes for the electronic parking brake. The actuator will fail at some point so stick to P-Park unless you really need to use the parking brake.
It sounds like a 996 is the one you want, therefore get the 911 rather than a Boxster. If you do choose to push the boat out and get an early 997, get a boroscope check done as part of the inspection. Other than that, I would recommend getting one with a ton of history that has been loved, over mileage considerations. Ultimately it’s all a roll of the dice as to whether it’ll cost in maintenance, but it’s a fun dice to be rolling! Good luck! 🙂
If you haven't already bought please buy 997 to eventually move up to turbo dream cars for me. Wouldn't be afraid to buy private if you had an inspection, no real difference to buying through dealership warranties usually mean nothing anyway. Ps enjoying the channel
987 / 997 over the 986 / 996 anyday.Better engineered cars with better quality interiors.Definitely worth the push.😊 Manual gearbox...recent tyres & brake discs a must ...plus a stainless exhaust if possible.I usually buy on interior. If thats not worn out its been looked after.
JayEmm made a very comprehensive video about the engine issue including info on which model years are affected and to what extent - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E5Q5-2IRntY.html Hope this helps.
I got into Porsche ownership 4 years ago, and I’m well above 30. Got the cayman 987 first, and passed that onto my son and he is 30 years old, and up graded to a Boxster 981. Each time I thought that will be my last and forever car. I think it’s great to have a Porsche journey and you appreciate each step. However I have no major desire to own a 911. Good luck on your choice and it will be exciting whatever you choose
I would say don't buy a cheap porsche unless you have significant back up funds to maintain it. A set of brake discs and pads or full set of tyres is the thick end of a grand. Buy the newest best condition you can stretch to. I bought a 3 year old 996 aged 30 for £45k in 2003. Insuring and servicing it was a big spend.
Boxster is best bang for buck, but people are soppy and think a 911 is better. Bit like going for champagne when cremant pretty much the same without the name
Hi Lucy. You talked about how great the Boxster is, but talked about not wanting one because it’s a convertible. …and never mentioned the Cayman. I’ve owned a lot of cars and one of them was a 2005 Cayman S. It was brilliant. I’d recommend one in a heartbeat
Definitely try a 987 Cayman. They have that lovely small coupe cabin that you described as race car. Although the aesthetics dont work as well on Instagram (to my eye) they are fantastic in person and a stunning rear quarter view in side mirror from drivers seat. Try. One You’ll see.
Lucy, I can recommend cars at Phil Raby. He’s close enough to you, (Bosham Chichester) knows his cars and has lovely stock. Google him so you know his background and have a look at his stock. Good to use a local(ish) specialist….. he helped me with mine and I know a few that have purchased through him.
I’ve just gone down this path. You can get a 997 c2 Carrera coupe for less than 20 grand. I was umming over one at 18. Make sure it’s under 55 reg for cheap road tax
I'd go for the 911. It's not peaking. While a 996 C4S is a fantastic car, you can still go to a turbo or GT3 model....and if the channel really takes off, perhaps a GT2 RS ;)
Mileage doesnt bother me if the service history is good or car has been looked after but with anything over 5 owners would put me off dont ask me why lol
The ims bearing is overhyped, its not a common failure, although it is peace of mind if one has been changed. Bore score is also not that common in the boxster 986 and 996 911, it is more of an issue with the 997. If you have your heart set on the c4s, I'd go for that. It is better looking and will hold its value more, hence the higher price now. Enjoy the channel BTW 😊
I’ve just bought my first Porsche, a base 2.9 987.2 Boxster in Guards Red with 29,000 miles on the clock and full Porsche history. No IMS bearing on this model and bore score is virtually unheard off with this variant. I’m absolutely loving ownership, the sooner you buy one the better, you’ll love it 😀
You're 27. You love the 996 4S. It's also channel content. Just get one. If you don't like it get the 997 next. It's also channel content. There's no real downside here. Just do it. For context, I'm 57 and am debating the same "problem" but don't have a YT channel. Maybe I should create one and try and make £7.87 back 😉
