I worked as a bouncer in college. Broke a couple guys arms and both times they just kept fighting, it really doesn’t work the way most people think. I’ve found hard takedowns, pins, and chokes work best and clothes grips work. The weird thing is some people wake up really fast. Takedowns and pins work better than striking, I did kickboxing for years and never used it. Was safer for me to just close in, take down the big drunk guy pin him and cuff him. Long story short, I switched to Judo after bouncing.
worked on the door 30 yrs ago ( 60 now), different days, no badges, no knives, no BJJ, just a scrap. However I was a steel erector on my day job and could pick someone up and shake them like a rag doll. them mostly went a bit quiet after that.
njj and mma practitioners tend to get a little cocky and forget that a real fight is nothing like a match, a sanctioned fight, or a sparring session. Ive never been in any of those session where i go to step back or circle away and ah shit theres a table, or damn that takedown really hurt bc a banged my elbow against the pavement and probably broke my arm or if someone is on top of me then can just pick up a brick or handful of dirt and put it in my face. Self defense is so much more than "we can kick to the balls now"
Not just bjj but mma as well. You get complacent with sparing or sanctioned fights that you are woefully unprepared for some dude who just plows into you and is not being technical at all just beating the piss out of you and theres not padded floors, no referees, you arent warmed up and steetched out, and that sidewalk you fell on is alot worse than a mat
So Judo is the better grappling art for bouncing, security and unarmed self defense based upon his descriptions of what works best based upon his experiences bouncing night clubs.
I love jujitsu, but the amount of room you need to pull off armbars, and other moves is not practical in a hallway, bathroom or in a bar with other drunk people.
Charles “crazy horse” Bennett attacked a jiu jitsu black belt in a locker room, he was choked unconscious, after he woke up he hopped to his feet and immediately knocked out Vanderlei Silva with a surprise right hand. Sometimes people wake up and choose violence.
Duck under to back was my favorite in wrestling. Sidenote: reset switch isn’t reliable. Had to stop my dad and every time I reset, he’d come back and keep trying to fight my sisters boyfriend
Nine years tang soo do and 7 years haidong gumdo i can agree that it’s hard to measure the effectiveness of your skills when sparring. White belts are taught to hit vital points right away. Sparring wouldn’t be effective if students were being hit in the throat and groin and eyes. Karate doesn’t translate to MMA which is a sport. “Martial” Arts science was developed for war.
Never seen a fight , I seen a lot of bullies certain they could punch someone in the face and get away with it . Only seen one of these ever turn out different then the initiator thought it would. Seen a guy start punching guy seen the guy getting hit went down said he was done the puncher let him up then started punching him again seen the guy kneel and crouch seen the guy getting hit stick his hand under his arms in his coat seen guy kneeling stand up and start forward and the second he got close enough his hand came out of his coat with a knife and he drove that knife to the hilt seven inches ;puncher was spraying blood like a lawn sprinkler , three inches higher and the puncher would have died right there that second. A guy who was out weighed by 30 lbs' end a attack he thought he was going to die from because he was terrified. Dont even be where fights are likely to happen there is some very violent shit happening out there and you should have more important things to do ;like staying alive. You can be bigger, faster and stronger and still end up dead.
I was dumb. Got into a dumb trash talk on the road. I’ve got 26 years of combat sports under my belt. He starts calling me out to follow him. Come follow me, let’s fight. So I followed him about fifty feet and quickly took the next left turn away. He went South I went East. The punishment just wasn’t worth the crime. I’m in a car and I can drive far away. I know fights. I’ve been in them and this guy tells the truth. I practice daily. In my mind I always win, but I know just how dumb I was being and how badly this would end for me even if I conquered my enemy.
BJJ is the worst choice for streets, because there might be multiple attackers, broken glass on the floor, a knife involved, or the guy can just poke your eyes or pinch ur balls while you're trying to execute some fancy shmancy BJJ stuff. There's SO many differences from the sterile BJJ sport environment and rules, that it has little to nothing to do with reality. BJJ fanboys are the most delulu in all martial arts
I've been saying for years that bare handed against a knife or knife vs knife is idiotic and guys with knife fettishes lose their minds, "you've obviously never trained." Actually, because I have trained, and worked as a cop, I know all that crap is useless
I have to say as someone who worked in a psych hospital. Used to do alot of tma. Went to muay thai. Never looked back. The conditioning alone is a massive leg up. Not mma, just pure muay thai. The clinch is king.
Not just bjj. As someone who has done tma arts before that has grappling aspects. I can honestly say. Alot of Movements don't work on short stocky guys either.
Mount Vernon? As in the po side of westchester? Then that means you are like one out of 10 white people that live in that entire 5 mile radius. No wonder your game has to be up to snuff
I have never heard so much self aggrandizement as I have right now. You have just installed yourself into the MEGALOMANIAC HALL OF FAME as the lead attraction. People think jo biden makes up stories, but he is not even a hair on a pimple on your ass. By the sound of your story you're constantly in a Fight. You are john wick on STEROIDS and A LEGEND IN YOUR OWN MIND. There is always someone bigger and badder than you and one day they will Kick your ass, you talk about killing that guy, well you may be the guy who gets killed. A little humility goes a hell of a long Way, you might want to get yourself some of that.
This really hits home for me when I watch someone like Damien Miaia fighting MMA. An amazing BJJ tactician getting punched in the head trying to close distance.
This video would be better if you weren't reading off a script, it just makes me think of Joe biden

At last someone on the web that really knows what he's talking about! The sudden adrenalin rush when a real fight happens as though time stands still and your muscles turn to lead while all your blood is sucked away from the surface. I've worked as a steward in a nightclub and had a good few fights where I've lost teeth, broke ribs, popped collar bones and generally ended up black and blue. Only one caveat: you have to train for weapon defence because sooner or later it will happen e.g. I was arguing at night with my neighbour's anti social landlord when he suddenly pulled his left hand from his pocket and hit me on the right side of my face. I only have peripheral vision in my right eye so I didn't see it coming but I sure felt it like a hammer and new immediately it was a brass knuckle. It hit the lower part of my eye socket and split the skin to the bone, blood spraying everywhere. I landed a few punches but again took a hit to the shoulder and the top of my head. The voice in my head was shouting danger - you're going to get knocked out - create some distance - which I immediately did by using a kangaroo stamp kick straight to his middle. The beauty of this defensive kick is that it is delivered just beyond arms reach and because your shoulder doesn't rise the opponent doesn't see it coming. It has less velocity and momentum than say a roundhouse but more driving force to push the opponent backwards. The type of front kick you would use to kick in a door. Getting kicked that hard, as providence would have it, right in the balls took the fight right out of him but after that one three minute round he was shagged out anyway. Wrestling of any kind, in my case Judo, builds endurance which I believe is an ace card in any fight. I had to get the wound under my eye glued together leaving a permanent scar plus one month later my balance went haywire and it took a full year for those little balancers in my ears to settle down. As a fighter you have to accept that sooner or later a weapon will appear and you have to plan your defence. People on the web say 'I would run away or avoid it somehow' but like me you'll probably have a fence at your back and a gate at your side or something else blocking escape. Denial is the wrong mindset to slip into when your life is at risk. I recently bought a splendid anti stab vest from China that sits under a t-shirt. The anti stab, anti cut material is only a quarter inch thick but spread out across the whole of the carrier vest and unbelievably you can cut, slash and stab at this material with carpet knives, kitchen blades and even spikes and it resists them all and the whole thing only weighs as much as a bag of sugar. That's a good start to weapon defence! Did I mention that I'm an old age pensioner with a heart condition and on blood thinners and this man was half my age, taller and heavier. I did not get the fight benefits from increased heart rate, blood pressure to the muscles etc. so my body rate was down at 'walk in the park' mode because of all my pills. I can only thank providence that all my learning and training in my early life has given me the ability to still defend successfully even now. Sorry for the long post but there was a lot to be said.
Many years ago I tried my first and only real fight. I said I would meet the guy at a certain place we both knew. I arrived and my expectation was that we would go off to a quiet spot, shape up, and go. Nope, the experience of seeing stars was quite interesting but I learned a valuable lesson. If you are going to fight. Get the first shot in. No expectations, just fight. Or at least be prepared and shape up. Luckily for me the place where this happened was outside and acquaintance house, which is why I thought we should move to a more appropriate spot, and those inside came out and prevented any further action. But, I was down and out for several seconds and totally helpless.
Best self defense skills I learned were in grade school, which was talking my way out of confrontation. When I moved to a 2nd amendment state I realized I never learned any moves that stop ammo. Words on the other hand go a long way.
I have never been in a fight. I’m small but kind of have a big mouth and I have talked my way out of SO MANY ass kickings in my life. I found this video to be super informative but also HIALRIOUS. Excelsior!
A trained friend was “defending” his girl from an insult, got in a scuffle, knocked the other guy out with a hook to the temple. Asshole bounced off the floor and my buddy now has a felony aggravated assault conviction, girl left him, can no longer own firearms, kissed his career in consulting goodbye and now works in fast food.
