Can someone explain how he does this with almost no water or food? I'm somewhat in shape, and when I ran R to R to R (granted, it was hotter, in late spring) I needed liters and liters of water and sandwiches, bars, gels, salt tabs, etc. etc. What is happening inside his body that lets him run with no fuel?
Just here to revisit one of the best trail running videos out there. There's nothing quite like the feeling of racing ultra distances with such stiff competition. Just knowing that one of you is going to lose, and desperately fighting so that it's not you.
8yrs later and this is still just as amazing as day 1. It's the gold standard. Hearing him say that he got to the river (down the 6.5mi S. Kaibab Trail) in 39-40 minutes, just further shows the insanity of this FKT, and Jim's incredible trail running skill.
@@wcomalley Please be more specific with what you're asking: 1) The previous record for what...an R2 or an R3? Jim holds both, from just this one run. 2) How long does it take to get to the river, from which trail, and which side of the Canyon? Hiking? Backpacking? Normal trail running? Or full send sprinting by an elite like Jim? You can hear Jim say in the video that he went down S. Kaibab Trail, (which is 6.5mi to the entrance to Black Bridge, and 5,000' of elevation drop) and that it took him 39 to 40 minutes. This is so fast, that it's just impossible to fathom. Look at the trail conditions as shown by RU-vidr Rubi Hammer, in 4K, and watch my recent run there: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vhz72W_aZKg.html and you'll see how incredible Jim's run is. 3) They mention the previous record at the start of the video, and it was several hours longer than Jim's 2 and change.
Jamil - I just signed up for EldenCrest 38 2025... After watching this video and seeing how confusing it is (all those gates!) I am concerned I will get get lost on race day :( Esp if i'm in the dark. Do you have any tips?
Jim leaves NK trailhead at 5:10 into the video, and arrives at redwall bridge, (the 5k mark) at 23:35. This is the most effortless 18:25 5K I’ve ever seen
Awesome!! Im inspired. For all the awesome volunteering out there at our ultra races. please dont touch someones food with your bare a$$ hands @ 19:16. use gloves utensils etc and common sense. Ultra hands are super super germy and runner immune systems are suceptible.
This is my favorite running video ever. I watch and listen to it weekly when I do a trail workout/uptempo run. The music and race vibes make me feel like I'm not alone and in a race. THANK YOU!
The hikers fighting their way up the mountain for hours, with heavy backpacks and tons of equipment, trough thick layers of snow and ice and high winds, while tourists in T-shirts peacefully take the cable car in 10 minutes and get to the top
24:41 got in 29 miles for the day. And he’s still working, filming etc. I run 10km and I’m done on a go slow for the rest of the day. These guys are absolute machines!
Huge! I am just beginning trail running but I will soon be on the lookout for race opportunities. Very cool to have an insight into race direction, thank you!
I've really been missing your videos man!! I'm trying to get back into trail running and your videos. Among a few others I was always watching for motivation. Keep Stickin' To It!!!
Hill and stairclimbing in one fell swoop. Do you monitor floors climbed? I myself refuse to buy smartwatches that do not do floors . You are very inspiring.
I’m thinking she’s focusing so much on not tripping on a rock or root that she really can’t look up to see that awesome view around her. One of the sacrifices with speed and an aggressive ambition. FOCUS.❤ But hey, she’s got a video she can look back on and see that view !
Now into 2024. Courtney’s 2023 was something special and following her via your broadcasts is fun and appreciated. In a year when track and trail athletes did extraordinary things - Faith and Kiptum on track and road; three finishes at Barkley’s; outrageous distances at Big Backyards. Something about Javier Dominguez third place and his method and means makes it my favourite thing of 2023. Fully independent and strong to the end looking in control and relaxed. Must be the rogainer in me, not that I ever remotely did that distance in a Rogaine however the twenty four hours or so and independence is admirable.
Sadly, some of the 'Giant' events like New York and Boston, could care less about cheating, unless it's for a top spot. So long as they get paid.. including cheating to qualify. In the Ultra world, it's a bit harder to cheat, other than bib swaps. I did catch a guy shave 3 miles 1k of vert at an Ultra once. He still finished behind middle of the pack so I didn't say anything. I just don't get it. I run, to prove to myself what I can do physically. Cheating that, is just silly and down right stupid.
