My goal of this channel is to analyze some of the best gymnasts in the world - present and past - doing their incredible gymnastics so many more people may have a higher appreciation and understanding of the incredible skill and technique that is required to be a world class gymnast. No matter if you are a gymnast or just a fan of the sport, my hope is my step by step narration and comparisons will help you feel the skills and routines more from the athletes point of view than just a spectator.
I’m being picky maybe but I think technically a leap starts and ends on one leg and it’s a “jump” when take off and landing two feet. Sissone is a jump. I love these videos though and correct me if I’m wrong ✌️🤸
@@reneepeters3045 Both of you are correct. That slight angle jump (4:21) was a Sissone. And when you take off with both legs it's a jump vs one leg being a leap.
You are searching for anything now! You are very jealous because the US Gymnastics team is black! You are such a jerk Lance & it doesn't matter what youropinion is because My people Rule Athletics! 😅
Nice analysis. The thing that caught my eye was the question “Softest landings ever?” I can personally attest to Carly’s lightness from seeing her perform in person. I was lucky enough to be in the audience at the 2003 World Championships in Anaheim during the preliminaries. My father and I were in the 4th row on the side closest to the balance beam. On all her skills, you heard virtually no sound when her feet hit the beam. It’s a quality that is very unique to Carly and one of the reasons why many consider her to be one of the best beam workers. *Side note: we got to sit next to Daria Bijak’s family(2008 Olympian for Germany who also competed at University of Utah). It was so much fun to hear her father proudly screaming “Deutschland!” every time she competed on an event. 😄
That is awesome. Such great memories and moments. Yes, the more I watched Carly, the more I could see it was just natural for her to land quiet, soft and solid, so unique. Rock on and thanks for the comments.
I never paid attention to or fully appreciated her flexibility before and I now have a new perspective thanks to your vid ❤. I wished she would have continued another quad because I think she had much more gymnastics left in her.
Glad you enjoyed the video. She really was an elegant gymnast. From what I gathered, her back problems (sporadic and UN diagnosed bulging discs were not easy to manage. I would have liked to see what she would have done as well if she could have staying in longer. All my best.
WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH 2024? 😅 LOL DO YOU THINK THAT THIS IS GOING TO CHANGE THE FACT THAT BLACK & BROWN WOMEN HAVE TAKEN OVER GYMNASTICS TODAY? DUDE GIVE IT UP! Lol 😂 SIMONE BILES RULES! SHI JACKSON RULES!
Hahaha. The historic gymnastics of the past have brought the level of gymnastics to what it is today. I believe there are many that might find that evolution interesting. Rock on and all my best.
Im not really sure u knew or not but Carly, Nastia Liukin, Rebecca Bross, Kately Ohashi, Skye Blakely are from same WOGA gym. Carly's coach is the coach of Skye Blakely as well. Rebecca Bross supposedly to be rising star 2012 after 04 carly and 08 nastia but she got injured during 2011. Ohashi supposedly rising star 2016 but stop after winning American cup 2013 because of back injury. All of WOGA girl technically and usually have very solid beam and bars.
Thanks for your message. I know many of the WOGA girls but I did not know carly was WOGA. Valeria Liukin is a friend and we competed together in my generation-When he was in Soviet Union. I do see many similarities in WOGA-their gymnastics. Carly had WOGA form on bars and looks like WOGA style. Nastia very elegant. I analyzed her bars: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8ROLqr0OfLs.html really great stuff. I am pretty familiar with gymnastics, general biomechanics, technique and analyze based on my own gymnastics experience as a competitor but I am still learning many things about women's gymnastics and their personal histories. It is very interesting to me. I appreciate your insight and thanks. Its how I learn more. Personal characteristics of each gymnast and their approach, style and technique can vary slightly from each other but make a big difference. That is interesting to me. Rock on and again, thanks for your insightful message.
Thank you fro your message. Kyla is great on beam and I love her long lines, flexibility and skill level. She lands solid and stands up very much like Carly out of her skill which contributes to her softness as well. I believe Carly lands naturally softer but they both feel the beam well and are really fun to watch. Thanks again and all my best. If I eventually analyze Kyla, I would definitely side by side Carly and Kyla. Just really elegant movement.
Interesting way of describing things 3:18 "power" and "height" for her elegant over-split switch-split leaps, and 5:03 "literally balletic" for her turning cat leaps ...
Really appreciate the details you point out in your videos, especially when you compare certain skills with other gymnasts. It helps to understand how small differences can change the overall look and feel of a skill that can ultimately lead to a higher value. I'm always so impressed with the way Karly sticks the landing of the Double Arabian dismount off the beam in Athens: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pGu4E2FWoFk.html.
Ya, it was awesome to see her stick so solid. Its a tough blind landing anyway so when she sticks, it rocks. Glad you enjoyed the video. It is really cool to watch her land. She is naturally soft and smooth. It is funny how small things make a large difference - not only in the qaulity of the skill but the over all perception of the skills. Thanks again and all my best. Rock on
Another good video. Patterson started this run of AA champions for the US in WAG. US is at 5 and maybe soon could have 6 in a row. That's quite a run. I don't think the Soviets or anyone else matched that type of run for the AA. I'd forgotten how good she was on beam. Silver in Athens. For some reason her floor always sticks out in my memory, I guess because that was the last event for her in the AA. Good comparison shots and pointing out how a slight imbalance affects the subsequent move / skill. Romania really cleaned up at those Athens games. Same number of medals as the US in WAG, but 4 of 6 gold. US got team silver for both men and women, and had both AA champions. That's a pretty good showing.
that was a great Olympics for the U.S. There just seemed to be a special momentum and they were in the zone. As you said, that momentum as carried on for a long time in U.S. gymnastics and it is really cool to see. There is a lot of great gymnastics being done around the world right now so I am looking forward to the Olympics. Rock on and thanks for you insightful messge.
Her name is MaRoney, not MaHoney.....You need to look at Skinner after 2016 because she really worked hard to get credit for hitting the vaulting horse with both hands...it made a world of difference!!!
Thanks for your comment. I am aware it is maroney and say it normal but mispoke in the video. I did look at skinners vault after 2016, and you are correct that she did get both hands on the horse much better and more sqaured off and it seemed to me that was the main focus of her vault. She still does not push off the horse very much as is apparent in her lack of hight but you are correct, she did work hard on it and visually it looked much better over time. Rock on and thanks for your thoughts and insight.
I would really like to see Donnell on the team. He does some great skills and has a shot at medals I believe. A true veteran, he’s stuck in there and still does great gymnastics. I wish they could take more athletes on the team as they did in my generation.
Great video especially cuz of how slept on Jordan is to make the Olympic team imo. She’s truly so clean and consistent on every event you can put her up anywhere. I think in terms of individual medals she has a shot on floor if she can beat flavia which I think would require difficulty upgrades and minimizing execution deductions on her leap series because flavia also seems to have a chuso (don’t search Paris 2022 FX EF) and better leaps than Jordan. I don’t think Jordan will get a cheng for the Olympics because of this 7:15 right here. Maybe I’ll eat my words but it looks to me like she would have to relearn this half on block completely because, like you said, she blocks the table really high in her handstand and also puts her hand on too close down the table. If she was gonna get a rudi into that block safely it would have to look more like Simone’s where she’s blocking way up to the end of the table. If she does get this cheng tho I think it locks her over jade
Thanks for your insightful message. Yes, it would be a challenge for her to learn a chin. Also, Olympic trials are not a great place to be overly risky at as falls are big addictions among four events and can greatly affect you. Maybe if she had more time, or maybe if she’s really behind in the ranks and she can do it but inconsistently she might choose to do it, but I don’t think that will happen. She has definitely improved greatly recently and all athletes will be assumably at their best shape at trials.I could try to predict things but I would get many things wrong so I just speak about what I can see ha ha ha. It will be exciting though. Rock on and again thanks for the knowledgeable message.
Thanks, Lance! Edit: Khoi seems to pike down a bit on PBars as he transitions from hand stand to a below the bars skill I've noticed. Are those big deductions?
No they are not deductions as they are considered part of the (tap swing or preparation swing) to accomplish those type of skills. On those giant glide skills like a tipelt, all gymnasts will have excessive arch in their swing before it and some other gymnast may choose to to a big pike into their arch. It is just a person choice of technique. thanks again.
I have had a few request for him and he is on my list. Some great gymnastics and I like his parallel bar workd. I may be a bit slow with videos for a week or so as I am going to Olympic trails. Rock on and my best.
Is Khoi's entry on his second vault a major deduction? It seems like the quarter twist instead of half would be something the judges clearly notice (I didnt until this video 😅).
Before the athlete vaults, they flash a number that tells the judge what vault the athlete is doing to do. Any deviation or characteristic that is different what what vault they flash that they are going to do can be a deduction. Khois vault is so fast and he twists all throughout the vault, it would be very difficult to see in real time what we see in the analyses but if a judge did notice it, they could take a deduction. It does not seem like they took any deduction for it in the competitions I watched. I wish I had a more clear answer but it is literally a judgment call and difficult to see in normal motion. Thanks for the questions and all my best.
He is on my list and I will cover Brody very soon and look forward to it. I will be at Olympic trials so I might be a bit slow for a week or so. Rock on and thanks for the suggestion. My best.
ur channel has the best analysis of pre-Olympics gymnastics than anywhere I’ve seen on youtube, or network television for that matter. you are a vastly skilled commentator, and ur bevy of experience, knowledge and passion for this sport is self-evident. please keep the videos coming!
That is very kind of you and thank you. I have always enjoyed being a gymnast and the gymnastics world and love to look closely at it. Such great athletes. Thanks you again and all my best. Rock on.
@@alchemyqueen2764 Hahaha. Thanks for the observation and I will look for that. I guess many athletes have their own idiosyncrasies or personal habits. thats funny. Thanks and rock on.
This is awesome. I hope to see much more detailed men's analysis like this, I think this is what is missing from television broadcasts for men, mostly because TV does not allow for it, in turn hindering new audience members' desire to continue to engage with the sport.
Glad you like my videos and thanks. I do like to look much closer to better understand and appropriate the complexity of great gymnastics. All my best.
All the athletes know, each other’s gymnastics inside out. It really depends who has the best day actually most the time. The judges know the athlete routines inside out as well. The goal is to push the limits of the athlete and still stay consistent. That’s the challenging competition. Anand all my best and thanks for your message.
She definitely had her own unique style and I was competing in her generation and I thought she was just as great then as she was when I did her analysis. Really just my preferred style I think and elegant to watch.
I wasn’t too impressed with Jordan at first but I feel like she has gotten better more quickly than anyone else. It seems like she got a lot more finesse in college. It’s still not all that pretty lol. Gymnastics has pretty much swung all the way over to the more athletic side. Figure skating followed. It’s still impressive, just not in the same way. IMO of course.
I want Jordan on this team! She is so consistent and able to step in when needed. I still question Suni because of health. She hasn’t put in 4 great routines in a competition. And I pray that Shileses injury heals completely. USA needs her on the team.
I think if they all have good competitions, they all have the potential to make the team. I think it will be very difficult for the selection committee to make choices. I would love for all of them to be on the team, but I also know there are only limited spots. I just want them all to have a great competition. They all have very strong histories already and do some great gymnastics. Rock Anand thanks for the message.
1992 LOL 😂 Simone Biles rules! Shi & the other black girls & Asian girls have taken gymnastics over! Lol 😂 Give it up dude! I was 19 in 92' I'm 51 now. Lol 😂 Simone Biles rules it all!
Haha. I am now 54. Gymnastics sure has changed. I still remain a fan. Yes, Simone is like a super ninja rules. She has a normal conversation or a little bit off day. She will still win. Very rare to see someone that dominant in any sport. She’s the Michael Phelps gymnastics. So cool to see the new levels they take gymnastics. We’re all getting older ha ha ha so we do the best we can. Rock on my friend.
Amanars seem to have become extinct. In 2012 and 2016 they were popular. I’m guessing they were devalued and the potential deductions are greater and the thought is a clean dty will score better? Is a Cheng difficulty valued higher than an Amanar or is it done more because it’s a different family maybe?
Chengs are valued higher than Amanars and don’t have a blind landing which I think is probably why gymnasts opt to do that vault rather than the Amanar. I do miss seeing them though!
tbh i would argue bars is one of jordan's best events. she finished ahead of skye at championships and has always been a very strong bars worker with a natural swing. is she going to UB EF at the olympics (assuming she makes it to paris)? i think she could contend with simone with the 2nd US spot and qualify for the 7th or 8th spot. edit: ok if suni is on the team, no she probably won't be in the running unless something bad happens during qualification to suni or shi but im not putting that out in the universe!
Its a good argument. Most of what I read and her medal track record is on floor and vault but I think her bars are very solid as well. She is not really week on any event, just needs to be consistent. I really dont know how they will select the bottome two athletes for the team. I think they will consider how well that do at trials of coarse but it is hard to say at this point. Thanks and all my best. Rock on.
Yes, I just want them all to have good competitions. I would hate to be on the selection committe as it is very hard to pick this team. Maybe Simone, Skye, suni and then I am not really sure and even that is not set. Its an intense competition and I just want them to all do well. Rock on.
