Having sought out and listened to this in many variations many times, I decided to look into the historic origins of the music and the poem. What I discovered was a torturous phalanx of academic mumbo jumbo about the industrial revolution and desperate attempts to connect the masterpiece with 'historic events', real or imagined. I am reminded of the old adage: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Who knows what 'Dark Satanic Mills' were or may have been? I prefer to imagine them for myself. Same goes for the 'arrows of desire' and chariots of fire. In the end, its all about the music, and the power of the orchestra to infuse the hearts and minds of the audience with hope and joy that fills the 'theater', be it indoors or out. Although I am a 'Yank' most of the time, when I'm listening and watching this, I become a Brit, celebrating my ancient origins.
I've heard a few renditions of 'Jerusalem' today, St.George's Day, but nothing - nothing - comes close to to a LNOTP crowd in the Royal Albert belting it out. It hits you in an instant. Added to that - this is from 2012, and I was up in the gods singing with them all. My only ever experience of the Proms. What a night!
Beautiful version of this. Alot of pride that is cherished among people that i respect for standing up to the cia italian catholic thug bs. Anymore the whole thing is a mess. Really sad. My grandmother came from England in 1919 and this song would be her anthem. She wrote poetry and prose of patriotism for both her countries and was a woman of faith that she passed on to me. She taught me the words to God Save The Queen and was thrilled I was born four months into Elizabeth's reign. I miss them both. This makes my heart swell whenever I hear it. ❤️
