I would agree, yes. However, I don't think Europe has abandoned Africa but is still exploiting it's mineral resources while formenting corruption and civil turmoil within. With regard to the Middle East, it's a harder read but one thing for sure, the entire world is turning a blind eye to the systematic genocide of the Palestinians by Israel. It's a slow process designed to not garner (too much) attention but the end game is total extermination. All in all, your analysis is a good one.

We cannot have a repeat of Tianamen and, you're right, military intervention would have dire consequences for world democracies. I am sure China is weighing the possible fallout to their economy and their international image caused by a military intervention that will cost hundreds of thousands in human lives. Additionally, a military intervention is going to be guerrilla warfare and therefore a precise victory cannot be surmised. What the rest of the world, especially, the G8, will do meanwhile, is anybody's guess. I figure monetary considerations will take precedence over human lives. We can only pray.
