hey man! is it possible to make a small sculpture with soapstone with a knife or is it too hard of a stone ? I'd like to make a ring but idk if i should look into another material... thanks
Soapstone could be soft enough to carve with a knife. You might have better luck with a file actually. But you should be able to carve soapstone with just hand tools if that's what you want to do. Personally I don't know if I would do a ring and soapstone because it might be more prone to breaking because it is a softer stone versus a harder Stone like marble or granite or Jade which you probably wouldn't be able to do by hand per se. Also soapstone is prone to scratching once you've polished it so if you have a ring for instance on your hand it's likely that just normal use might end up scratching it unless you keep it in the Raw state of the stone where you wouldn't see the scratch necessarily. All that to say could be worth doing just to see right you never really know but yes soapstone is soft enough to work with hand tools but as I said a file may work better than a knife
