Correlation, not causation, exactly so. But you might be, or might not be surprised how much the satanic panic has jaded views to this day. When going through the process of adopting my son in the late 90s, I had to have a entire social work meeting to explain my hobby. Apparently role play is a red flag. Long story short, my son is in his 20s and plays rpgs with his friends now.

Hi, your content found my feed, and I stayed to listen. Very interesting, thank you. I am an oooooold DM from the 80s with lots of different experiences and one or maybe two insights. I have played games from many genres and lots of dice... die... dice?.. um, systems. But found that it is easy and cheaper to take the system that you know well and use it in every genre. I play Cyberpunk 2020. it's what I know. I use this system for everything. I fit it into the game as a sort of Quantum Intelligence artificial reality mcguffin that characters can dip in or out of or can be thrust into when they need to enter the datanet. My point, though, is you can do anything and don't need to buy new systems to play different genre. Understand your chosen games' mechanics. Descriptions and imagination are the only skills you need. Edit: (research interesting details about the world you want to flesh out). The dice rolls come down to basic success/fail and damage. And player fun is the payoff. 😊

This is awesome! Thanks for listening and sharing. It definitely makes sense to "reskin" a system you are familiar with. Saves money and time of learning a new system!

Just found this video on my home page! I’ve wanted to take the Odyssey and make it into a ship based campaign. I’m a newer DM so haven’t had the guts to try to flesh it out yet.

Odd silly question : what about taking the characters from cartoons? Nickelodeon, Animaniacs, etc?

Hey, first time listener (got sent here from a Ginny Di video if it helps you algorithmically) but I found all this really insightful. Though it wasn't the primary focus of this episode in particuar, I wanna jump on the point you made regarding the hetero-normative grognard knee-jerk reaction that D&D was derived from a war game, and thus should ONLY be used for that and social systems should be used for more social games (maybe I should go check out the dedicated video, but I'm here now, so that's where the comment is gonna go) Brennan Lee Mulligan said something really insightful on the topic: the reason he uses D&D to tell very socially-driven stories is because he ALREADY KNOWS how to run an improvisational social experience that players react positively to even without using a specific game system, but he doesn't know how the physics of how an arrow flies through space or what exactly would happen if you got hit by a big ass sword in a specific part of your body. So he chose D&D since it has almost no social rules to hold him back but is really crunchy on the combat end of things, which is the most helpful thing for him. So it really is no wonder people started using D&D to cover their bases regarding stuff they didn't know how to do at the game table, and the grognard reaction to put people in system-specific boxes based on what kind of game they want to run really does boggle the mind. Let the system help you tell your story, don't let the system tell you how to tell it. (As a side note, being a queer voice actor by trade I'm 100% into the notion that theater people are drawn to this game in particular for that very reason. I started playing when I was 16 as a result of, you guessed it, theater! And here I am at almost 30... time flies.)

Hey! (Soren here) Thanks for sharing! :) I love this and totally agree. I think you said it best “Let the system help you tell your story-” I’m definitely thinking about this in a whole new light now - and thinking about all my D&D/Theater adjacent friends who run games…I would not be surprised if this concept blends into some of their approach as well. Also, so glad we’ve got some theater friends in the house. Welcome to the garden!!

Nice episode. I think in dnd it is often the assumption that the dm has a lot of prep and worldbuilding in place. So that is why players can hold back to not interupt the "canon" or to break the narrative. Players feel more empowered in games where it is expletely more free form i think. I played avatar rpg and there are no rules for bending so players felt empowered to describe it as they saw it. This is quiet different compared to the dnd magic system with concrete rules in the spells which leave less wiggle room to not be gamebreaking.

That's a good point! Anyone who comes into a new game that they are not familiar with are most likely to 'follow the leader' to an extent. Crossing that threshold of collaboration probably comes with time and familiarity with the table. Thanks for chiming in - we are glad you enjoyed the episode!

I made Buffy in my current Curse of Strahd campaign by multiclassing Fighter & Paladin, which includes the monster hunting kit from Pallie, weapons & fighting style mastery on fighter, etc. More of a Faith personality, though.
