The Complexity Principle

If you're trying too hard to look cool, you're only going to look like a fool... to yourself. Because making a complicated D&D character may sound like a great idea to begin with, but in reality, you might only be making your life harder. And life's (hard enough) like this already, so may just chill out and lay back, because complicated has already been done before. Maybe lets just... keep it simple?
This week in the Rosegarden, Caitie and Soren discuss how complicated characters have gotten in their way in the past, and how they have overcome them in the present. From RP to Combat, lets talk about how to keep things easygoing and fun around the table!
Editing TJ: "Give me just 2 more hours, I promise I can stuff a few more Avril Levigne lyrics in there. No, I'm not doing this for the listeners, I'm doing this for me."

Hey, first time listener (got sent here from a Ginny Di video if it helps you algorithmically) but I found all this really insightful. Though it wasn't the primary focus of this episode in particuar, I wanna jump on the point you made regarding the hetero-normative grognard knee-jerk reaction that D&D was derived from a war game, and thus should ONLY be used for that and social systems should be used for more social games (maybe I should go check out the dedicated video, but I'm here now, so that's where the comment is gonna go) Brennan Lee Mulligan said something really insightful on the topic: the reason he uses D&D to tell very socially-driven stories is because he ALREADY KNOWS how to run an improvisational social experience that players react positively to even without using a specific game system, but he doesn't know how the physics of how an arrow flies through space or what exactly would happen if you got hit by a big ass sword in a specific part of your body. So he chose D&D since it has almost no social rules to hold him back but is really crunchy on the combat end of things, which is the most helpful thing for him. So it really is no wonder people started using D&D to cover their bases regarding stuff they didn't know how to do at the game table, and the grognard reaction to put people in system-specific boxes based on what kind of game they want to run really does boggle the mind. Let the system help you tell your story, don't let the system tell you how to tell it. (As a side note, being a queer voice actor by trade I'm 100% into the notion that theater people are drawn to this game in particular for that very reason. I started playing when I was 16 as a result of, you guessed it, theater! And here I am at almost 30... time flies.)

Hey! (Soren here) Thanks for sharing! :) I love this and totally agree. I think you said it best “Let the system help you tell your story-” I’m definitely thinking about this in a whole new light now - and thinking about all my D&D/Theater adjacent friends who run games…I would not be surprised if this concept blends into some of their approach as well. Also, so glad we’ve got some theater friends in the house. Welcome to the garden!!
