Welcome to Freddie Johnson's You Tube Channel. That's me. Since I spent 20 years of my life in radio broadcasting, I'll be featuring some rare KPCC radio interviews from the archives, plus music videos, as well as some cool footage of my super-talented dancing daughter Olivia Johnson dancing around America. The KPCC interviews are now being digitized after 25 years in storage. Be sure to come back and visit now and again because I am finding some really cool tapes. I present them to you for your enjoyment and entertainment. Thanks for watching and please subscribe to my channel. Peace!
He has stage 4 liver cancer at the time of this interview, his body probably doesn't feel right, but he refuses to hang up his guitar. Thanks for all the inspiring music Joe.
Thanks. Kind of depressing that you only have 120 followers and after one month only have five or six people hit the like button on this interview with Steve Allen. I found this because of the interview you did with Artie Shaw and I look forward to seeing what else you have.. if it gets too good I might have to share it to my Facebook page! :-) haha
Nice work, Freddie! Great to hear Howard Alden on an album I'd never heard before. He's playing his you-know-what off on Steve's ballad, "I Should Have Told You So." And Howard's solo on "After You've Gone" is brilliant!
Thanks for your comment and for checking this episode out. I was warned by his agent to not ask about "the women" and Frenesi/Begin The Beguine". I stayed clear of that by Mr. Shaw took his own initiative and brought it up anyway. He was an impressive individual and has great energy. He was a regular listener of my morning show and actually asked his PR guy to call me. What an honor. More to come...Margaret Whiting, Steve Allen, Maynard Ferguson, LIttle Jimmy Scott, etc!!
Fantastic artist. He gives fantastic insight, but he said an artist should never take advice in terms of how to do their craft. I can agree unless the two ppl have the same idea in terms of what particular little thing they are striving towards, for instance, how to do a particular brass instrument technique.
A most complex man a most talented man with endless ideas when improvising. The genius of Artie Shaw was that his creativity level was endless, he could play chorus after chorus and not repeat his phrases always playing something different he was a real super talent indeed. The interviewer did an outstanding job here letting Artie do his thing and i think he caught Artie in a pleasant mood and kept him there.
@@scotnick59 Thank you Kirk! There's a terrific book called 'three chords for beauty's sake' about the life of Artie Shaw and i highly recommend it. Written by Tom Nolan
I was told that he did not suffer fools, or any type of un-prepairedness. He was relaxed and candid after the first 5 minutes, as I was prepared for his visit and did my homework. Thanks for listening and there's more to come!
Love, love, love Joe Pass. I enjoy him chatting verbally & his music is so clearly his wonderful personality. The stuff of him with Ella Fitzgerald is magical.
Thank you very much for posting this. You did a great job with a potentially difficult subject, and it's fascinating to hear him so relaxed and spontaneous, illustrating the various subjects you mentioned.
Joe mentions a Nick Gemus as a guitar teacher from his youth. Nick's brother, I believe his name was Jimmy, was a heavy duty musician himself (flute), playing under Toscaninni, touring with Red Norvo, playing in the pit for the original production of West Side Story. Jim Gemus grandson is a very fine upright jazz bass player, who for years played with the great jazz drummer of Stan Kenton fame, John Von Ohlen. And the great jazz world continues to spin....
Mr Johnson, thank you for this amazing interview. I've heard many interviews with Artie shaw and at some point he gets easily irritated. You manage to keep his interest and to avoid talking about the obvious (Begin the Beguine, Ava Gardner etc..). His interview with the late Arnold Dean (host of One Night Stand with the Big Bands WTIC radio) in 1971 was also very good.
Okay- PS- Anita mentions to the interviewer- the film, "They Shoot Horses Dont They?".. THAT film truly gives the idea of what those marathon dances were really like. Anita did that before she was famous. The interviewer , Mr. Freddie Johnson- didnt really give it much time and no thought. But Anita told the truth! Watch that film and youll see what life was like then and what Anita was involved in when she was very very young.
She was much more than a pretty face. She was true jazz. True soul of a woman. But kind and sweet spirited, from what Ive gathered. Lifelong fan here. Thanks for this interview- and music!
