I finally found this old tape after 26 years! This was a very special visit with The King of The Clarinet, the reclusive genius Artie Shaw, dating back to March 9, 1994. My KPCC FM morning show, "Classic American Music" was one of his favorites I later learned, and he'd tune in every weekday morning from his home in Newbury Park, CA. KPCC had just been granted a power increase and the transmitter tower had been moved from the C Building on the PCC campus to its current home up on Mt. Wilson. Please pardon the noise on the recording, as mentioned, this was culled from an old 26 year-old cassette so there wasn't much I could do to cancel out the high-end hiss. Hey, it gives it that vintage sound right? Enjoy as we listen to his (then) recently re-issued Music Masters recordings of his quintet dating back to the mid 1950s. We cover a lot of ground and I attempt to speak with him intelligently, although he was 80 years old and mentally on fire that morning. But he did not get pissed off at me, I did not bring up the women in his life, or anything else that he might have taken offense to. Mr. Shaw did not suffer fools!
