I find it interesting, knowing my mom’s people lived in those mountains for hundreds and hundreds of years before these folks rounded them up and didn’t even give em anything. The sent them to Oklahoma during the trail of tears. I’ve heard it said that what goes around comes around.
My wife-to-be and I were there in 61 looking for the stones of her family. She knew about the cove. Her mom was an Oliver. We found other names she remembered, too. She was born on the other side of Newfound Gap, not far from Cherokee. There were still a few families there in our time, and the cove had not been turned into the park yet. The graveyards and churches were still open to the public, though. The road was gravel, I think, and we had to ford small streams in the car. The fields were still being worked, and the cattle were there. No campground. It was just us. No tourists. No traffic.
@ronaldriggs. i figure Mike Maples is a distant relative. My aunt did a family tree several years ago, and there were three brothers named Maples came from England . one settled in Tennessee, one went to Missouri, and one to Arkansas i believe best i remember.
I cant wait to look back on these videos and see all of those Smokey Mountain Moonshines a thing of the past! Every other building is now one of them!?!?!?!
How come no one's telling the story of how the government kicked everyone out of Cades cove??? The way I heard it is they passed a law saying you could not do any kind of repairs on your dwelling. After some time the dwellings became unsafe. The government then deemed them unsafe for human habitation and evicted people think about it why would anyone leave such an idyllic place
If you follow Soak Ash creek from Evan's chapel to the head waters. A big bench called fleeker is at the head waters just below The Cat Stairs. My grandparents Etta and Lawrence Proffitt lived there in the early 1930's.
I have 5,000 board feet of Cherry, Walnut, Maple, and Popular that was logged out of this region by the Little River Lumber Co. between 1929 and 1932. Some of it you can build a chest of drawers from one board.
Great video and pic's too! I was gonna say that the pause between fades to a new one could be a bit longer but... All's you gotta do on viewer's part is "pause it"! LOL. Thanks.
That yanked is talking like she knows everything about the area Why is she so so interested deeply in southern folk and mountain history and communities?
On March 23, 2023 I located this cemetery using the coordinates in a book written by Gail Palmer. On the same day located the Ramsey Cemetery where Johnnie Ramsey is buried. Coordinates from Cemeteries of the Smokies were invaluable.
I am the Great Grandson of I.B Mcgaha from Little Cataloochee/Mount Sterling area. I do not know the man who produced this video, but He did me proud. Fantastic video, the man did his research! My Dad and I are some of the last walking links to the History of that fine place. I am now 54 years old and actually Thank the Park Service for leaving it unspoiled. Otherwise it would be developed into resorts etc etc.Long Live the Smokys and Go Tuscola Mountaneers!!!
Such a beautiful mountain town there. We ended up on State Route 32 in my wife's Suv. Boy was that a ride 😂. I see why it's the sibling of the Tail of the Dragon now.
Thanks tnmagicman! We haven’t chatted in ages. I share DNA with the Caughrons of Cades Cove. I really ‘feel’ it when watching these. You do a fantastic job capturing the lives of the Scots-Irish who came here!
Thomas Popcorn Sutton was born a mile up the road here where I live. Good old Hemphill Road here in Jonathan Valley. Made Shine with Him up in Maggie Valley. I learned from His mishaps what To Do and NOT when making that Stuff. He would cuss me like a Dog the whole time while dropping his half mile long Pall Mall Cigarette ash in the Fresh Mash. His Son Saul is a trip changing tires one day on TV the next.
P.S.Popcorn's Sister Pansy Sutton was a dangerous cat She would soon shoot you or cut you than deal with you, but Her Mash making was the best on the Planet. She could have bottled that Corn Beer and made a Mint!!!!!It was Delicious and Nutritious!! Corn and I would slip in and get it so we would not have to deal with her. Take it down to the valley at His "Antique/Junk Store".Take down the Boiled Peanut Sign drain out the peanuts/rinse. Throw in the mash set up Cap and Condenser! Jonathan Creek right behind Shop, hose to the Worm Barrel We in business selling Photos of Old Popcorn and bottles of Shine to the Florida Folks up on Vacation. If your Tag was from NC No Sale his policy. Damn I miss the 90's in Maggie Valley. Sorry for the long story I could write a book about Maggie Valley folks.Oh shit I am one of Them!!!!!
