New subscriber here. Really enjoying your videos and the little details and facts along the way. Those 428 cj heads were made that way to get heat out of the heads and chambers. I have a friend with two of them sitting in his garage. He and his brother were really good on the local strip with those engines.
Thank you for subscribing and the wonderful story. This kit is taking me a long time to build, simply because 97% of the parts need modification for them just to simply fit together. Hope you can survive to the last video!
Do you use enamels exclusively or have you painted with acrylics? If so, do you feel you get similar or same results with acrylics as enamels? Are the thinning ratios different? I add a couple drops of retarder to slow drying time and / or flow improver to acrylics with the same approach of several thin coats to help avoid brush marks but am still learning and experimenting to get the best results.
I use acrylics primarily when I paint figures or Warhammer models. - this is the first painting video in a series I am making. I will try other paints in future videos, but for now I am going with Enamels.
You mean there's a part 5? What's all wrong with this kit? Seriously though, if you plan on doing a NASCAR version, you're better off grabbing parts from one of the polar lights Talladega or cyclone versions - I do like the amt TorinoTalladega bodies better than the PL Talladega and Cyclone Spoiler- I heard them kits don't go together too well either (I could be mistaken) Thank You again for showing this to us
It gets worse! I am working on Part #6 now....but it's the final put-together of both cars. If you made it through Parts 1-4, you are doing well. You are seeing that there is a lot wrong with this kit, and hopefully I am getting all these issues resolved. - This project was more than I expected. I don't think I've experienced a kit with so many issues to it, apart from the one Polish WW2 Monoplane aircraft kit I built in the 1980's. That kit had a 2 part fuselage where the left side was shorter than the right side and the wing had a top, bottom right, middle and left wing and the gaps were huge! Anyway, my regular model car build videos are usually 1 video 35-45 minutes long. This kit made me make 6 of those videos! - Yes, it has issues, but I can get them resolved. The final builds will be great!
I wonder if that was for the street machine version and someone decided on doing the dual air cleaner as a last minute idea, or if it was first introduced in the oval track "Modified Stocker" racer. Sadly, I wasn't able to find the instruction sheet online for the Modified Stocker to compare it too.
You are welcome Pete. It sure has been a lot of work and discovery on this model to get it right. I am not sure if I will ever make such a detailed build video again as most of the other AMT kits don't have all the issues that this kit does. I am looking at attempting the AMT 1969 Dodge Daytona (With nose, filler pieces and wing) as the next kit, and I have already figured out what I am going to try to do to make the troublesome nose fit on...but after that, the rest of the kit fits well together, and the only other issue is the excessive flash on the parts. But now that second troublesome kit seems easy compared to this Ford.
If you use the dual carb set up with the dual carb airfilter prepare for removing around 2mm in the hight of the setup(manifold,Carbs and Filter) to make the hood fit!(ah,just came to the part where you adresse it 😉 )And iam just doing the interior details because the doorpanels dont look at all like on the real car!Very fiddly and time consuming!
For sure on those door panels. Again though, I am just building this to the point where the average Joe can get the pieces to fit and so that I can get all the issues resolved. I should get another and do an all out, engine wired, inner door panel parts and whatever else to really jazz it up version. I'd also like to do a dragster, now that I sorted out that all those parts are still in the kit to some degree. Maybe use the dragster decals from the 1966 Galaxie kit on there too.
Thanks for video, Gotta question for you, Do you still have and would you consider selling the Hood Scoops that come in AMT 49 Ford Coupe? The kit comes with 2 Identical Hood scoops and I noticed you built your 49 Ford Coupe stock. Thanks Again. Really digging your walk-through on 69 Torino/Cobra, Great Stuff, Thanks
I will have to consider it. I still am in the process of building that 1949 Ford and I was going for a custom...but I might also get another to build stock.
Thanks, That hood scoop I think is Perfect size for All sorts of car kits, I built my first 49 Ford with a Tonneau Cover on Roll Bar covering back seat, in Tribute to Bob Falfa's 55 Chevy White Tonneau Cover in American Graffiti covering back seat. The Extra Hood Scoop from 49 Ford kit I put on the AMT 51 Fleetline. Anyway, Appreciate the Time, Thanks Again
I built one these several years back as the NASCAR version - didn't turn out the way I would've liked it to - currently have one on the shelf halfway built - I'm going to use aftermarket Plastic Performance Products tires and wheels because they're much more accurate- the mesh grill that doesn't fit properly is actually for the Talladega version since that front bumper and grill is slightly smaller than the regular Torino/Fairlane grill - Thank you Trevor for showing this to us - this is extremely useful👍
Wish I knew that about the mesh grille. Thank you for the enlightenment. I was wondering why the curve didn't touch the edges of the head lights. Yes, the wheels and tires are not quite "Period Correct", but hopefully by me shortening the backs, they are a bit more realistic to NASCAR.
It is a bummer that Testors discontinued their Model Master line, but I am a builder from the 70's and 80's, all we had was the little square bottles. I hope Testors never discontinues these paints.
I don't think Testors will discontinue all their square bottle paints, but I do have some in my collection they don't carry anymore, like a light orange and dark green gloss. - I also have a collection of Model Master paints, especially the engine colors.
Guess it will depend on what direction Republic Powdered Metals (RPM) that owns them will decide. Appears as though they’re continuing to downsize the Testors line of product offerings instead of expanding though I’m not certain how accurate this statement is.
@@MonsterHobbiesModelCarGarage I will have to practice what you have shown. I hope these techniques also work on Testors Flat paints for some of my WWII models.
Hey Trevor!Line you made on the rocker panel to the fender should NOT be straight!it follows the curve of the Fender!😉And the scribed line for the endcap is too strong! Its very subtle on the real car, because it spotwelded to the sidepanel! And ive already resolved the carb hight Problem and hod fitment!
I think you missed the part where I said the rocker panel line should be curved and that on that model I accidentally made it straight because I scribed the line in there years ago, before I knew it was curved. - but I did say that and on the other model car body, I do have that curve in there. Anyway, I am glad you fixed the other problems with your kit. I have an issue because on my stock engine, I used the high rise "NASCAR" intake manifold because originally it was going to be a NASCAR motor until I discovered the dual carb air cleaner issue and had to swap the engine. Ahh...it's too complicated to try and spell it out. You'll have to wait and see the rest of the upcoming videos to see what I am doing.
@@MonsterHobbiesModelCarGarage I just got a good deal on one from importer. Damaged box so £25 post free👍😃. Nearly half the U.K. rrp.. I've also just looked at 69 Cobra rocker panel lines on a yellow car,the lines show up well exposing a horizontal line going from bottom rear corner of doors to the rear wheel arch🤓😃I've just been adding them😂
@@MonsterHobbiesModelCarGarage it's the line of the upper edge of the rocker panel to the rear quarter panel join. It is hard to see as body line half hides it in most videos.
Great video,Trevor👍😎. I noticed the rear wheel opening lines are too far forward and, like you, compensated for that when flaring them. I patched up the hole below the water bottle from the inner wheel arch,as there is a big slot behind the bag. The NASCAR grille screen is hardly worth using, due to poor fit and it's quite easy to make a replacement. I'll have another update on my build next week🤞
Sounds good Pete! I hope whatever I did today makes life easier for your build later. - There's so much going wrong with this kit at every opportunity.
@@MonsterHobbiesModelCarGarage I've got the kit to about the same stage as you at the end of this video. I put a 1mm thick tombstone shape into the whole depression behind the water bottle. It fills the arch hole and the bit below water bottle. I also found i could safely remove most of the round, pin towers, either side of the radiator and tidy it up with strip,to give a squared off, radiator framework.😃sorry that's a bit hard to explain😧 I'm worried about your next video. 😧You may have found more faults that I have yet to enjoy😃
@@petesmodelcarcustoms584 I considered cutting the tubes off the radiator support wall, but I didn't want to get too far into totally reconstructing the mode. Maybe on my next one.....maybe! LOL! Don't worry Pete...there IS more issues with this kit. I am currently working on the 5th video in this series. I almost have the model finished...and there's still issues. Will it ever end?
@@MonsterHobbiesModelCarGarage 🤣🤣🤣what a model😃🤣. It's had a lot of faults but I have thoroughly enjoyed the research,I'm about to check the rocker panel line. I've also enjoyed spotting the differences from each release and doing my best with the kit. Your interior and roll cage shots are helpful too👍😃
Glad I can help. Well, I was working off and on on the model today and I have the factory stock interior finished as well as the chassis and exhaust system...which also has a slight fit issue, but it was the easiest issue to resolve. I still have the NASCAR interior unpainted. The hardest part is to try and sort out a paint scheme for the car. I want to attempt to use the kit supplied decals which are 2 shades of orange and dark green and finding a color combination for them is a bit of a challenge. I could go with a light blue, a cream color, white, light yellow, purple (And hope the decals are not translucent) or an even paler green or orange or even gloss black. Sadly, the interior also has to be painted this "mystery color" like they do in NASCAR. I just don't know what the color is going to be yet, so there's my delay. I'm also not sure if I should paint the dashboard and roll cage semi-gloss black for an anti-glare feature or paint those body color. Oh, and I also think I have to drill a hole under the stock hood scoop to allow the air cleaner ram air "Shape" to fit in the hole and allow the hood to sit down flat. - Yet another issue. UGH!
fill in that cutout under the washer bottle with putty or a very small piece of sheet and putty this is just how I would do it keep up the good work & great videos
Great tip! I was going to fill it with some putty, but I think trying to sand it at that angle to smooth it out would be difficult as I believe the tools don't want to go there without a fight.
Not at all....but I am hoping that after I make this entire video series, no one will ever have to do that again! I'm putting myself up as the willing victim to struggle through and find all the faults and correct them. I started with 23 things I found wrong with the kit, and then the list got longer and longer. I hope everyone appreciates my efforts!
You are welcome. In the near future, after I finish building the AMT 1969 Ford Cobra kit, I want to start building this one and the Daytona. Hope you'll keep an eye out for those builds in the future.
I see 👀 that you mentioned Boyd at trek works in the opening credits and just wanted to say how much he will be missed, Boyd was a big influence on me and I will always remember him.. REST IN PEACE 🙏 BOYD...
@MonsterHobbiesModelCarGarage Trevor I just found out myself.. I knew that he had cancer but I thought that he was doing well with treatment...very, very sad and I was in shock when I found out..
Love your car. I am trying to get my grandson interested in car models. And I have a restored 1930 model a coupe in my garage. My grandson loves riding in the rumble seat (mother-in-law seat). This model looks pretty intricate for him. But I like it and is pretty accurate.
Hi, Gotta question for you. Do you, by Any chance know what size and make V8 engine (Not the Flathead, but the one with 3 Carberators) comes in the AMT 1939 Ford Tudor Sedan kit#1434, I'm building this kit and was wondering about plug wiring sequence for Magneto. Thank You
Hi Trevor, thoroughly enjoyed watching this vid, it's well worth putting the time in and getting the model looking it's best, I've never come across a model that's required this kind of work, but as my AMT,MPC collection is growing it's great to learn new skills, im delighted Round 2 is bringing out old kits. Thank's for a Great upload with some history on the models too, im working on my Hertz Mustang and will work on the Torino later down the line, next im doing the "Jolly Green Gasser" simple promo style but with clear coat brushed on and stickers. Best wishes to yourself, family and fellow viewers.
@@MonsterHobbiesModelCarGarage Hi Trevor, thats great I look forward, I got a Revell model T Ford for my Birthday and decided to do that next as it's got lots of challenges ie im doing it in the recommended colours and plus decals too. Best wishes for a Super Weekend.
@@MonsterHobbiesModelCarGarage Hi Trevor, Hope you had a Great Holiday it's good to see new places and spend time with family, I was just looking through my Holiday pictures from 79 in Canada and saw some I took when I visited Heritage Park in Calgary, old vehicles, steam trains and shops it was an amazing place, still have the car brochures I got when I was in Calgary, hope your weekend is Good.
