They keep making content like raids instead of content like barrows. This version of osrs is not my osrs. I quit sometime around late 2020 because I feel like they are incentivising introducing very expensive best in slot gear which has both low drop rates and few people who have the skills to clear the content efficiently. Jagex makes a lot of money each time a player gives up and buys 1000 dollars of bonds to get the satisfaction of having the best weapon.

I now play ffxiv, where the savage content takes me 10s of hours of practice to clear, and I need to beat it 8+ times where I am rate limited to one clear per week, but I get the best in slot gear with a guaranteed drop rate. Rng locking you out of loot on hundred+ hour grinds is not particularly fun or chill.

The funny thing is alot of this problem manifests from people that are already at that late game level, that point where you could probably reasonably raid or do most bosses, but you also can't do specific difficult content like Phosanis, inferno, maybe corrupted gauntlet. It's like that little extra step forward that people cant seem to jump over. People who clearly have the capacity to do things like combo eat, prayer/gear swap, and potentially lazy flick, but for some reason when the game decides to throw enough factors at the player, we just seem to spaghetti all over our screen. Its alot like the jump between difficulties on rhythm games, like I can easily do medium on DDr, but when I bump up that difficulty to hard, I just cant seem to catch up. I find that interesting because we seem to compare this game to rhythm games as well. Also good video, and good talk.

I died to jad and quit for a year because of the time it took just to get to reach that wave. came back and beat it immediately and although I can now beat most bosses I know i'll never attempt inferno (unless they make some way to save your inventory and wave progress then let you retry from your highest wave)... too devistating to lose all the time just getting to the boss.

All of my initial knowledge comes straight from my 12 year old brain but after going through the motions of getting out of the early game I found it fascinating of these nuances like tick manipulation and DDS etc. I only get maybe an hour or two to play every other night with a 1 year old to watch but I like that there’s ways to play that require your full attention rather than mindlessly mine for ore or some shit the same way you would 15 years ago

Man the "it's ok to take time" thing is so real. I just started a PhD on very technical stuff that has always massively intrigued but also somewhat scared me because "I just didn't or couldn't get it and I probably never would". Read: I didnt understand it on a first skim through or without putting effort in... LMAO. And you know what, the moment I started to take time to read carefully and read things over and analyze things step-by-step and perhaps look things up from external recourses I DO understand it in most cases! So what I'm taking days to get through a "short" 8-page paper. ("Short" because usually those shorter papers are packed to the brim with info building upon info anyways). It's okay. As long as you're making progress and learning from them. Just like learning end-game PvM in games, shit can feel overwhelming at first man, all this info getting thrown at you while having a certain responsibility to get it right looming over your head. Panic is a very reasonable response. But know that it is NORMAL and part of the LEARNING process and that everyone you see and know (content creators, musicians, professionals, etc.) have had this at some point too (unless they're gigarare prodigies, well lucky them then I guess)! And whenever I feel like 'I'm not getting through this anymore', I take a break or do something else light and come back later with a fresh mind. There's no use in forcing yourself to it, it's actually very counterproductive. Tl;dr: Doing new shit that is unfamiliar and/or complex takes time. And always will. Shit is not black and white between prodigy and failure. Normalize taking time to struggle.

No old school runescape just sucks. Who has the time to grind 1 particular part of the game for hours on an end for just 1 item? Or going dry for thousands of kc to get that big drop you need to progress in the game. It's just not feesable. The game doesn't suite its player base and "Real" player count is heavily attributed towards that and I doubt Jagex can even fix that without altering a game to the point where the hardcore jobless nerd base aren''t in tears

As someone who: 1) Has loved this game since I was a kid 2) Has a game design degree and 3) is getting their Psychology degree... Good Talk. More seriously, I think that you hit on the sources of frustration quite well. Particularly the "jank" of the game and its mechanics, which I think has a lot to do with some of the frustration that people feel when they get into more mechanically complicated content. It's a big barrier, and like you said, an esoteric one; a lack of mechanics knowledge of all the little ways that the systems of Runescape works will mean that you just can't understand HOW to do, even if you understand WHAT to do. I think this is the foundation of the frustration, and the "smashing one's head against the wall" and the community culture just build on top of it.

"niche game fart huffing" actually puts it perfectly, bravo man happy I got this recommendation. It's not like I actually felt inferior per say. I would recommend that players set themselves small goals, to medium, to eventually the big goals. Rome wasn't built in a day guys. This is a point and click medieval game with lots of content to do. If you are actually miserable doing something, take a break and do something else, knock out a quest, do some skilling, lots of content will help you out. It's not a race to get everything done. When you return to that content you will comeback fresh. TL;DR Enjoy. Playing. The. Game.

I was REALLY struggling with CG. Bring an iron put a lot of pressure on learning and farming it and NOTHING was clicking for me. I did SO much other stuff to put it off, and one day i had a moment just like your inferno cape where i just decided to really go for it. It took some time but it eventually clicked, and it felt REALLY good when it did. This is a great video, and is good motivation for anyone looking at that next step out of their comfort zone.

For osrs, I had my bout of imposter syndrome with my skills in the game I have a maxed account on my original RS account(now my RS3 account) however, I just didn't have the time or motivation to max anything or try raids in osrs at all. Never even got a fighter torso for years despite being well beyond the stats for it. Simply do to me being afraid of disappointing or angering BA players. It got to a point where I had gotten my quest cape before my first 99. I was so turned off by the "efficiency scape" playstyle that I would just get angry at myself for even trying to level or attempt new content. Now I'm maxed, and vibe on my new ironman. but it took me till last year to do so. I really should have just stopped comparing myself to others way sooner.

I'll just say three simple things (followed by much more). (1) Lots of bad players now play this game. It has so many normal, young, non-serious gamers. Hence, the whole 'meta' issue (which was never really a thing until 2013 onwards thanks to Titan and other meta-ists). Amazing combatants already existed, and bossing has become harder over time, for sure. (2) They compare themselves to the BEST players possible, doing the best tick-perfect stuff on RU-vid, etc. (this is a problem in gaming as such, not just OSRS). (3) Certain elements of OSRS are objectively difficult, either with tick-perfect stuff, profound focus requirements (mentally), and/or other skills, memory, and otherwise. Here's how I'll break this down: First, you don't NEED to be the best. Second, some people are actually good. They just are. Let's not lie and pretend that everybody can have fast reflexes, 140 IQ, and amazing motor and mental skills to do the craziest possible tasks, kill runs, and so forth. Zezima himself rarely didn't anything shocking in terms of single tasks, but he's possibly the greatest player in history, and I'll just say that he's very smart IRL, and some of that cleverness does factor into OSRS and other gaming skills and traits. I'm not an idiot, and have played OSRS for years now, and RS proper since 2007. Best I did was reach #2 in the world for niche category of Summoning/Prayer (level 27) pure on RS3 many years ago. Beyond that, not too highly ranked due to larger player and talent pool. I could do some bossing if I tried, but I know I'm not built for the best possible things. But I know this and don't care about it, so I never do it. Sadly, many have this feeling that they have to do it, even when they're clearly not talented enough or don't have a real interest in it. This leads them to spending 2 months failing at an end-game boss for no reason than other 'most people do it or try to do it'. Maybe they finally get the kill, maybe they give up. The only positive here is you get a real sense of just how difficult it is, and how impressive the top players are. That's the opposite of 'everybody can be good, there's no such thing as being bad at gaming'. If bossing was easy, most players would be doing it. If most players did it, the rarity of items would be extremely low, which would make them dirt cheap. If they were dirt cheap, very few players would be doing it. I think you see the issue here. Now, some people enjoy bossing for no reward -- and certain bosses have stable profits thanks to alch prices, high output of commons, and raw GP drops, among other reasons. This really returns me to two issues: (1) The modern/recent belief that you 'have' to be amazing even when you're not (2) The relative difficulty and complexity creep of bossing, etc. (compared with 2006, as a general rule) If Jad was easy for you, then you'll just be crying that you can't do Inferno, which is much harder. Note: The only other thing I will say is that you WON'T KNOW how good you are UNLESS you TRY. YOU MUST TRY (if you want). I don't want to try bossing, so I don't. (I might do Ober in the future in F2P, that's it -- but likely not worth getting the Keys, as Hill Giants are not ideal, nor even Moss Giants. Keys need to be a more common drop in order to make it really worth it for me.) Now, I stress this point since many people say 'I know I cannot beat x boss right now, so I won't even bother learning it'. Of course, you cannot beat it until you do. Pro tip: what I've learnt by looking at pro players of all sorts, and speedrunners, is they're only a bit better than me at a game the first time they try it. Wait for it. Wait for it. But when they play the game 2 or 3 or 4 times, they are far better than me after even 100 times. This is really magical to watch -- soul-lifting, then soul-crushing. The way their minds work is different. They have very good reflexes, memory skills, and much more. They can absorb stimuli quickly and accurately, and then repeat the process, making micro-adjustments along the way. To my knowledge, this is also how sportsmen function. They can also map ahead EVERY TIME once the route has been mapped in the first place. The best example for me is Crash Bandicoot 4. Seeing a pro go from 'decent' to 'truly amazing' after just a few plays was insane. This is true also for the world-class bossers in OSRS and the crazy tick-perfect stuff. A normal player would struggle to ever learn that -- even most of the pros have to spend many hours mapping it in their heads and fingers (muscle memory). Normal players don't have the will power or mental ability, which is fine (assuming my idea that 'you don't have to be amazing, just because 0.1% of players are amazing'). Plot twist: if all humans had the ability of Zezima and [insert amazing speedrunner/PvMer here], then nobody would be amazing. It would be normal, by default. It's only impressive because only 0.1% of people can do it or push themselves to do it, or some very low % point, depending on what we're looking at. In the case of the best Crash Bandicoot 4 players, for example, data indicates it's about 0.2% of players. Most actually give up before even fully completing the game (roughly 70%). For some, that's due to boredom or whatsoever, and for others, it's due to lack of talent (i.e. the game is too difficult). (I think this did hurt sales and the game is maybe 30% too difficult for its own good -- partly due to the devs being too skilled, seemingly, which is a fucking odd complaint, as devs are often under-skilled or under shoot their puzzle game. Crash 4 is objectively difficult. Data proves it and sales indicate it. The only people saying it's easy are the masters -- a handful of highly skilled gamers. Of course, this feeds into something else: maybe the devs don't want you to beat x boss. Maybe it's not for everybody. Maybe it's only for the top players that put in the hours and skill, as to ensure that rare/BiS item does not flood the market, and there is some sense of accomplishment in the sub-culture and market structure. If everybody had BiS items, devs would be forced to simply make new BiS. This causes power creep rapidly.) And :difficult content actually helps control power creep, and keeps the game healthy long-term. You just don't want too much GP flooding the market is the problem, or for there to be power creep strictly in the BiS. But if the rewards are not OP, nobody will care about the new boss. This is the paradox of new content -- more so, end-game content. Nonetheless, it does ensure power creep is a smaller issue, and has some positives to it (even if 90% of players literally never play said content directly -- they can still benefit from the system, sometimes even the high-stat gear by simply buying it).

Yoooo, I really enjoyed this. I can relate to this in so many ways. Especially the mental state that is affected by the fear of late game content. The 2-4 hour YT vids on how to do late game content is so defeating. TOA has been like that for me, at first I was so scared of trying it solo and even trying it at all. The whole, “fight through that false feeling” was so helpful and now I’m comfortable with 50 invos and did my first 150 solo without dying! I’m enjoying the content so much just because I gave it a chance. Inferno is my next challenge to get past the feeling. Definitely encouraged by this, thanks for bringing it up and posting!

I'm probably about 200 deaths into the colosseum, but even though I still lose most runs before Sol to a stupid mistake (sometimes bad execution on a really tough spawn) I've massively improved at the game throughout my time there and honestly have enjoyed the grind! I'm probably something like 50m in the red from my attempts but the experience is fun, the execution tests and strategising are enjoyable. It's just so important to 1) do other content too and 2) appreciate how far you've come. Don't get me wrong, stupid deaths are still incredibly annoying and I'm definitely guilty of being a bit too hung up on them, but the lost money is honestly no big deal and when I go to do content I'm more used to, my improvement at the game is very affirmed. So as Toes says, don't glue yourself to the grind! Thanks for the advice on taking breaks tho, I'm definitely guilty of forcing sends for too long without end... I need to respect how I feel more directly. Oh and for the 3D Sol sim. Wtf is this it's way too realistic, I hated the 2D one I tried as it seemed way too different from the actual game, I'll for sure be trying out this one a lot. Cheers!

@@FreeToes I feel pretty close tbh, progress may have been slow at times but it's been fairly consistent. I think part of keeping a good mentality for me is just respecting the difficulty of the content whilst knowing plenty of people have managed it before. It's definitely some self-exceptionalism to believe that either you can't do it, or you should have done it already. Being a smash melee player of 10 years too helps for sure, I've played the GOAT, newbies of all stripes and everyone in between. Learning to respect everyone else regardless of their skill keep you both humble and self-assured, but it's not a balance that you can maintain without real self-reflection. But it feels very healthy when you manage it!

The more end game content they add the more pressure they will feel to make mid game easier/non-existent. This happened with WOW by having them sell you max level characters. There aren't really many good solutions to the idea of a game progressing infinitely. You could do complete resets like with what we have in leagues already of something like path of exile. You could do "get everyone to the late game as fast as possible and devalue progression on a new expansion" which is what you have in WoW. You could do something where once you hit max level/achievements you can "prestige" resetting your achievements and stats (I think lotr mmo does this?). You could introduce alts so there is a reason to play lower level content again. You could introduce new challenges/restrictions like Ironman and ultimate Ironman. The issue that osrs has right now is that they design for multiple of these BUT haven't introduced any new methods of progression. They continue to introduce new content fleshing out the game which is good and is needed. The solutions I said above will allows players to play exponentially longer. It is important to mention that infinite progression is extremely hard and if you implement stuff like prestige or alts without adding content the game will feel bad too. There is a balance to find. The next progression aspect I think will be the collection log being more fleshed out and have rewards/qol buffs. But we have not had a new way to progress/look at the game in a while so everyone finished with their progression Ok sorry but lastly the only way I see the high level community be happy is if one of these features end up being implemented for them specifically(so high level pvmers can progress again). Still can't believe they don't have a "stat lock" account type. They could also do a "hardcore stat lock" account which means if you ever earn exp you lose your hardcore stat lock status. That might help but also maybe some way for a account to make their own challenges. Stuff like speed challenge, high scores, and least gp used being officially displayed would help a lot. I think project zanerous (butchered spelling) will lead to a ton of ideas like this which jagex will be forced to take ideas from.

I miss blood rune crafting. Holds a weird place in my memories. Had a relationship end in a not horrible way back in 2021, but ya know still hurts. Around that time, I had the busiest stint of work at my print shop. We were printing Stellantis Mailers for Dodge, GMC, RAM and Jeep. Perhaps one of you reading this, have gotten one of those lol. But anyways, oh man, it was such a large job for us, one press, two guys. 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week for 6 weeks. Granted I didn’t have to work that hard per union protections, but damn I’ll tell ya I didn’t want be at home during that time. Don’t tell anyone teehee, but I have the OG OSRS client from Jagex (only one that works for whatever reason) on my work station. I was able to play basically my entire shift and yes I am addicted to this game but that’s not the point lol. I went from 90-99 Runecrafting in 32 days. That whole grind is a blur lol. Also got the pet with 70k XP to 99 and literally leapt out of my seat at work. Anyways, random tidbit. Felt like sharing. Good luck with your adventures, if you read this far. See you all on.
