The grey beetle has a built 75 beetle zig zag single side plate transmission. The beige one has the same tranny but in stock form. It will be built soon.
Thats a neat system there, guess without heater pipes its that simple. So need need for any bleed valves? And did you still run pipes through the TB, or just delete them.
I did not need bleed valves with the big pipes going to the expansion tank. I did not run coolant to the throttle body. I am planning on installing heat one I find a unit that will fit under the back seat nicely.
I am currently not running a heater in the beetles. But I do plan on doing so when I find a suitable heater core unit. I was thinking a universal one from Amazon under the rear seat.
In the Subaru the heater supply and return are located just above cylinder #4. I think they are 2 half inch metal pipes. One comes from the end of the cross over tube, and the other is a black pipe that leads to the water pump.
I purchased the bottle from Amazon. Just search “expansion tank”. There are many different colors and sizes. Then I modified it with the inlet and outlet pipes.
Real Nice. I’m planning to build a Subaru powered 73 super beetle. I already repower my Vanagons with Subaru power . I drove a NA 2.5 bug and it was plenty fast for me.
Thabks for making this video. Im working on a conversion and the cooling system is the biggest hurdle. Planing to use 1 1/4 emt as well glad to see someone having success with it.
The most important part I have found was the expansion tank. This was my third attempt at this. By running the big pipes in and out of it, makes the bleeding procedure so much easier. I am putting a new engine in my beige beetle. When I do the coolant fill I plan on doing a video.
Those long coolant hoses probably dissipate tons of heat simply by virtue of them being so long and exposed. Nice design and clean execution. I like it.
Do you use an engine mount bracket for an ej motor? Or does it holds up the same way as the vw engine by the transmission bracket and bellhousing bolt?
I use and adapter plate that lets the engine hang just like a beetle engine. For extra support I put a transmission strap kit around the bell housing. Aswell as I use I mid mount on the transmission.
Thank you very much for sharing your video congratulations the work you did is excellent. I am currently working on the conversion of my 1970 VW BUS and would like to know if I can use an external pump? or I also have to do the same thing you did.
You can use an external pump. In my other beetle I have an external pump feeding my turbo Subaru engine. Works perfectly fine. It’s just noisy. I will be switching to an in tank pump possibly this winter. Just make sure the external pump is lower than the tank. That way the fuel pump is gravity fed out of the tank and it doesn’t need to work harder than it should pulling fuel out of the tank.
I did get the tank professionally lined inside just to be sure. I just drove it for 11hours this past weekend. No leaks, no gas smell in the trunk, and no noisy external pump. I couldn’t be happier on how it turned out. I will be doing this to my beetle as well.
Sounds beautiful! I’m getting a Super 44 side exhaust put on my 2010 Sport Trac around Christmas time, thanks for letting me know how my baby’s gonna sound!
Utopiabugs thanks it sounds nice 👍 I’m looking for that sound with added mpg & performance. Unfortunately all the magnaflow or Borla are to loud to expensive and sound like crap. Lol. 😆 I have a 16 sport.
Aaron Petty they just don’t want to do it! I would love to do this on the side if I had the shop for it. Hoping to get the wife’s 74 super swapped. I have a ej22na for hers sitting in the garage already.
That was a squeeze ! Cool when it fires right up! Heres my strange Subie swap, fighter fuel tank car. Please check it out and subscribe for finishing Videos .Thanks Louie
imprezaSOHC Yes that’s my Subaru swapped beetle. It is holding up quite well. I don’t launch it hard tho. I snapped the cv joint on a hard shift. But considering it was the original axles and transmission that came in the car in 1975. I think it has done its duty. It is a single side plate IRS transmission. The best transmission VW put in a beetle. No matter how much money you spend, if you abuse it it will break. I have a spare transmission to install this spring just to be safe. But again it is a stock VW beetle one.
